3 religious and seminarian to host a vocations table and speak with parishioners interested in a religious vocation. Thanks again to Mary Ann & Mike Matteson, Deacon Ken and all members of our Vocations Committee for their hard work organizing this event. FROM THE PASTOR S DESK *At our Town Hall Listening Session on the issue of clergy sexual abuse in the church, I promised to write a letter to Archbishop Gustavo including a summary of our parishioners ideas for advice and solutions about how to solve the sin, crime and crisis of clergy sexual abuse. Last Friday, November 9 th, I forwarded a 4 ¼ page letter to the Archbishop just as he was preparing to depart to Baltimore for the yearly U.S. Bishops Meeting that will be focusing on this critical issue. Archbishop Gustavo acknowledged receipt of the letter and asked me to thank the approximately 90 parishioners who shared ideas. You can find a copy of the letter posted on our St. Peter s Parish website. It will be titled: Pastor s letter to Archbishop regarding solutions to the clergy sexual abuse crisis from St. Peter s Parish Town Hall Listening Session. I invite all parishioners to review this information as our input for the Archbishop s consideration. Please be aware that I typed-up the notes as a composite of all feedback received during the Town Hall Meeting, along with responses and handwritten notes to me and the staff from parishioners who could not attend. This approach allows us to be empowered to be a part of the solution, not merely voicing our concerns or complaints about the abuse. Thanks to everyone for praying for the U.S. Bishops this past week during their three-day meeting. In the near future we will post on the parish website the remainder of the transactions of the Town Hall Meeting. We thank Brad Wakely, Terise Bransford and Kathleen Tong who have been organizing this effort and transcribing the proceedings. Surely we will have all read or seen accounts of the Bishops proceedings in newspapers, on television news and online. We pray and trust that the Holy Spirit was and continues to be very active in the Bishops to find a more comprehensive solution to this extremely serious matter and act expediently and courageously. Thanks, again, to our parishioners who participated in the special Prayer Service for the Victims of Sexual Abuse prepared by a special committee of our Staff Members and held on Thursday, November 8 th. *What a busy place it was last weekend at St. Peter s Parish: Women s Faith Council Women of the Well all-day Retreat; two Baptisms; Celebration of National Vocations Week with vocations talks at each Mass and guest religious and seminarian visiting; Mission Council Work of Human Hands sale to assist the poor of the world; Veterans Day recognition and blessing; A.C.T.S. Unity Mass and Potluck Luncheon; Catholic Daughters (C.D.A.) baked potato with trimmings sale, to name a few events. *Special thanks to Fr. Johnathan Felux, Director, and Sr. Ana Cecilia Montalvo, Co-Director, Office for Vocations for the Archdiocese who helped staff our Vocations Fair this weekend. They organized our visiting *Special thanks to Diane Beaton & Paula Hoeppner who led the organizational efforts of the Women s Faith Council Woman of the Well Retreat last Saturday. Over 100 women of the parish were in attendance from 9:00 am until 4:30 pm and then attended the 5:30pm Mass with the community. It took Diane, Paula and the volunteers of the Women s Faith Council who served on the special committee to put on this major spiritual event for our parish. *Thanks to all our parishioners who continue to slowly send in their donations and pledges to the 2018 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. We are very near (appx. 98% pledge goal) to reaching our overall goal of $140, Thanks for your generosity. *As you recall, we were asked to assist with an ecumenical effort through the Hill Country Daily Bread to provide green beans for the cook-at-home meals for needy in our community for Thanksgiving. Our goal was 300 cans. To date our parishioners have contributed almost 1,000 cans of green beans!! The staff of H.C. Daily Bread is immensely thankful for this outpouring of generosity from St. Peter s parishioners. As you can see, our donations will assist this helping agency well beyond Thanksgiving in meeting the needs of hungry families in our area. In Christ, SINCERELY FR NORMAN PASTOR St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church 3

11 GOSPEL MEDITATION As we edge closer to the closing of the liturgical year, the Church selects readings that remind us of the final close: the second coming of Christ. It's easy, perhaps, to forget that this is a dogma of our Catholic faith. We see this dramatic end times language in today's Gospel. "The sun will be darkened? and the stars will be falling from the sky." As Christians and as human beings, we know all things will come to an end. "But of that day or hour, no one knows." The "end of the world" and end of time at Jesus' coming is in a future unknown. But God has given us beautiful reminders of this truth. We see the signs and symbols of ending all around us -- nightfall at the end of each day; the life cycle of crops coming alive, bearing fruit, and being harvested; our own death. That, too, will come at an unknown day and hour. But that is the way of things. Even as God created in Genesis, He gave us a sense of time -- the sun rising and setting, a beginning and an end -- to mark our days. So how do we welcome these built-in forms of measurement? Do we take time to quietly recollect at the end of each day? Do we see every morning as a fresh start for mercies new? Do we observe the seasons and reflect on what they might be speaking to us of God and His glory? "Heaven and earth will pass away, but my works will not pass away." The little beginnings and little ends are opportunities to renew our faith in Jesus, if only we have the eyes to see! LIVE THE LITURGY "But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father." None of us knows when the world will end. All we know is that it will end. All things do. Many people choose to live a somewhat carefree life by living as if life will never end. They go from one day to the next, never giving a thought to the fact that today may be their last. If you knew exactly when your life will end, what would you do differently? As Christians, we are called to be people of beginnings and endings. God is in all of life even when we think that life cannot get any worse than it is. Creating life out of death is what God does best. We are asked to live vigilantly, seeing God in all things and being ever prepared to meet him, whenever that time comes. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP The ancient Greek dramatist, Euripides, wrote, "No one can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow." We seldom focus on that reality and often act like we are confident of a tomorrow. However, we all know names of those who died suddenly, maybe in tragedy or simply in the quiet of sleep. Calling those names to mind will probably still not force most of us to contemplate our own mortality tonight before placing our head on the pillow, but perhaps it should. We don't need to obsess about dying or fear the unknown, but realizing the gift of today and reflecting on the possibility that it may be our last day can cause us to act differently. We might forgive more easily, argue less, and embrace one another. Rather than procrastinate, we might act now. We could become more mindful of our surroundings, see the needs in people, and reach out to those who are lost. I write these Everyday Stewardship reflections every Sunday. You might read them in your parish bulletin, on a website, or in social media every Sunday. Just in case this is the last Sunday you ever have a chance to read these reflections, what is God calling you to do now before it's too late. If you are still here next Sunday after taking all this seriously, you might wonder at what it was to live more fully and to give of yourself more freely. Don't let a single day pass you by without truly loving others and your God. One thing you can be confident about: This day will never come again. --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS WHY DO WE DO THAT? Question: I've heard that gratitude is a fruit of the Holy Spirit. What does that mean? Answer: In St. Paul's letter to the Galatians, he talks about the "fruits of the Holy Spirit." He is referencing an idea that Jesus talks about frequently in the Gospels. "By their fruits you will know them" (Matthew 7:16). He uses the example of a plant. If the plant is healthy, it will bear good fruit. If the plant is unhealthy, it will bear rotten fruit or none at all. Jesus echoes this idea at the Last Supper, when he says that if we remain close to him we will "bear much fruit" (John 15:8). If we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, we will bear the fruits of the Spirit! Technically, gratitude is not one of the fruits St. Paul lists. "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control" (Galatians 5:22-23). But doesn't that sound like the response of a grateful heart? When we're grateful, we experience a sense of joy and peace that makes it easier to love. We can be kind, patient, generous, and gentle with others rather than possessive or competitive. When we're grateful, we don't need to grasp at what we don't have. We practice self-control. Gratitude helps us to be faithful, knowing God will always be with us. Sounds like good fruit to me!

16 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church Losing a spouse is a difficult and disorienting experience. Whether sudden or after a long illness, the intense emotions, the lifestyle changes, and the many practical considerations that accompany the death of a spouse can cause a person to feel overwhelmed and anxious about his or her future. Over time, the grief subsides and a new life is built. We are starting a new support group at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church called Moving Forward. Our focus will be on moving forward from grieving to creating that new life. Our initial meeting will be Sunday, November 18 at 3:00 pm in the Parish Office Meeting Room (also known as the kitchen ).
