1 ST PATRICK S PRIMARY SCHOOL PARRAMATTA PATTER 4th September 2014 Term 3 No.8 Dear Parents Next Sunday is Father s Day. Father s Day is celebrated in 72 countries around the world with Australia, New Zealand and some Pacific Islands dedicating the first Sunday of each September to these very special men in our lives. The first Father s Day was started in 1972 by the then President of the United States, Richard Nixon, who signed it into law. The idea originally came from Sonora Dodd who after listening to the pastor of her church talk about the virtues of mothers, felt inspired to propose that fathers receive equal recognition. Sonora lost her mother when she was fifteen, and was looked after her father who she remembered as being a kind and loving parent who kept them together and happy. Father s Day is not only a time to celebrate the day with our dads as a family but for many of us it is a time when we think of them through the memories of our childhood. I know from my own experience I have very fond memories of my father. He used to sometimes love spending time away from the girls, retreating with my brother to the garage. There he would teach him how to do simple carpentry and fix cars. What was so interesting and special in my recollections is that whenever my sister and I joined them he would never send us away and would always speak to us as if we also were interested and capable of doing mechanics or woodwork. This solidified in our thinking that women are intelligent and skillful. This is a very powerful concept to grow up with. I also remember how respectfully he treated my mother and I believe was a wonderful role model for our brother on how to treat women. In this way fathers have an enormous responsibility to demonstrate, to their boys, especially, what manhood is about. Boys look on their dads with such honour and awe; they are heroes in their lives. Strength and gentleness, intelligence and vulnerability, seriousness and laughter, wisdom and curiosity and love and forgiveness are all qualities that boys need to see in their dads. I have the enormous privilege this year to see some of the boys I once taught, now fathers themselves. I cannot express adequately how proud I am of them and the wonderful men they have become. This Sunday let us keep in mind all the fathers, grandfathers, uncles and cousins who provide our children with positive male role models. Let us particularly pray for those members of our community whose fathers are no longer with us but who live in our memory, nourished by their love. 2 Prayer for Fathers Most gracious Heavenly Father, We thank you for our earthly fathers, those to whom you have entrusted the responsibility to provide loving protection of their families and guidance of their children. Everyone is most welcome to join with the school community in thanking God for the love and guidance given to us by our fathers. FATHER S DAY RAFFLE Thank you for the generous support of the Father s Day raffle this year and the commitment of a number of enthusiastic parents who spent a considerable amount of time organising, pricing and selling gifts and raffle tickets yesterday. Thank you also to Mrs Jones and Mrs Nutter for ordering the gifts early enough to have a better selection and to Mrs Annette Romanos and Mrs Julie Sabat for organising the donations and for selling tickets before school every day this week. The gift of your time is very much appreciated! For your information the raffle will be drawn in the playground after the Father s Day morning tea approximately 11.30am I would also like to thank the Year 2 parents who will be organising the morning tea for the dads and grandads. Please note: mums and grandmas are more than welcome to join us for a cup of tea and snack also. As advertised any Year 2 parent who would like to donate a plate of food, please drop it off at the office in the morning. Lost Property Parents can we please ask that you check the name on your children s jackets as we have several jackets missing that are labelled and kids sometimes pick up the wrong jacket. We have an over abundance of lost property in the office ranging from scarves, sports jackets, bomber jackets and track pants. If you are missing items please come into the office and go thru the pile of lost items.

4 NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN) The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy results for 2014 have been delivered. All students in Years 3 and 5 will receive these results tomorrow afternoon in a specially marked envelope. The staff will be spending the next few months analysing the information to create action plans so as to continue to improve learning outcomes for the students at our school. It is pleasing to note that the school average was above the national average in all areas. CYBERSAFETY It has come to our attention that a number of children have been accessing highly inappropriate sites on the internet at home. All parents have been informed. This brings to light the importance of discussing cyber safety with all our children especially as the internet is becoming more accessible anywhere, anytime, on any device. For more information on how you can assist your child in the area of cyber safety can I recommend you visit the government website below. The information on this site is for parents of all ages including teenagers. It also includes information on social media sites and recommendations for the safe use of technology for families. Year 5 Marian Nursing Home Visit: On Wednesday 3 rd September Year 5, Mrs Fardell, Mrs Tondini and two of our wonderful parent helpers Mrs Tannous and Mrs Dooley went to the Marian Nursing Home in Parramatta to visit the residents and put our faith into action. The students performed several songs and dances in groups to entertain the residents. Some of the residents even sang and clapped along. We even had one Italian lady who we called Nonna, which means grandma in Italian, conduct the children s performances by counting them in one, two, three, go. The staff and residents at the Marian Nursing Home were very appreciative of our time and dedication. After the children performed they interacted with the residents by talking to them and giving them little gifts such as cards, socks, scarves, beanies, hats and hankies. The children displayed care and compassion in the gentle way they interacted with the residents. They chatted, listened and gave lots of hugs. It was beautiful to see the smile on the faces of the residents as well as the children. It was a touching experience that the children thoroughly enjoyed and they were even asking to return for another visit. This experience allowed the Year 5 students to put their faith into action and see how something as simple as giving up some of their time to talk and listen can make a difference to someone s day. It was a great experience for us and it made us happy to see the people at the nursing home so excited. - Amelia Tannous It opened our eyes because it made us feel blessed that our grandparents are still healthy and that we are lucky to be healthy. - Marybeth Abraham It was a memorable experience where we opened our hearts to them and they enjoyed us being there. Harrie Chrisstopher We felt happy that we can put a smile on their face because some of them are lonely. - Francesca Davino The residents were very sweet and enjoyed talking to us. - Jaxson Rahme It was amazing to have interaction with people who are a lot older than us because it is something we are not used to. It made me respect the elderly a lot more. - James Moses

There will be an INFORMATION evening on Wednesday 8 th October at 7.30pm in the Cathedral hall. Parents who are interested in presenting their child should attend this meeting. To be eligible for preparation the children should be 7 years of age by the 30 th June, Please collect a form from the Narthex of the Cathedral. This form should be presented at the information Session on Wednesday 8 th October. (Please do not pass it in to the school or parish office prior to that date.)
