TRANSFORMED is a church-wide seven session Campaign that will guide and grow our church by exploring what the Bible has to say about every essential area of our lives: Spiritual, Physical, Mental, Emotional, Relational, Financial and Vocational. The world is shouting for our attention with answers to our relationship struggles, solutions to our financial trouble, and explanations to our search for meaning. But the world s promises leave us empty and searching for more. God s will is the only answer that promises to TRANSFORM our lives from the inside out. MANISTEE UMC, page 2 This study was written by Rick Warren, author of The Purpose Driven Life and

3 the staff at Saddleback Church. Every Sunday the sermons will be related to the week s study. We will be looking for volunteers to be small group facilitators that will meet for 1-1/2 hours weekly. We will also be looking for people that are willing to host small groups in their homes or at church. The weekly studies consist of a 30 minute DVD and group discussion. Workbooks will be available that contain daily, minute readings. Watch for sign up sheets. If you are willing to facilitate or host a small group, please contact Pastor John, Shirley in the church office or Sally Koon. Unite as a church and be TRANSFORMED together. MUMC quilting group will meet 9:30 to noon and/or 6:30 to 8:30 on Wed., August 17th. The goal is to make quilts for charities, but new quilters are welcome to come and learn. For information, call Joyce Brenner at Pews vs. Chairs Discussion Tabled The Leadership Team has decided to table the discussion about replacing the pews with chairs for at least a year. We are moving forward with the discussion on air conditioning possibly being installed next year. Can the Fall Bazaar and Luncheon be far beyond? Turn around and before you know it, October 15 will be here. A Silent Auction will be new this year, and contributions valued at $25 or more are needed - a special item, a service, a basket of goodies, an art piece. The list goes on. As always, the craft section needs to be filled with original, hand-made items from aprons to picture frames to jewelry to wood worked items. As you downsize your clutter, look for Granny s Attic treasures. In these hazy, lazy days of summer, be thinking, planning, and creating for our big event. Fall s just around the corner.

5 Stephen Minister/Care Giving Answered Prayer Kingdom Life Ministries Encountering the God Who Heals By Jeanne Van Eerden I was intrigued by the thought of attending the Healing School, with Rev. Dr. Bobby Cabot. However, I knew I couldn t go. My daughter was going out of state that very week of the school to a specialist and she was relying on me to be with my grand daughters, 11 & 9, for 2 weeks. I offered to help out with preparations for the school and pray diligently until I needed to go downstate. As we prayed, Bobby prayed that things would change so I would be able to attend the very next day, my daughter called saying she had found a doctor in Muskegon who could help her and he was a Christian. I didn t say a word to my daughter about the healing school or the prayer. I didn t say a word to Bobby about what had happened. God was at work behind the scenes. God was answering that prayer. I said, Lord, you are working this out you must want me to go to the healing school! I am trusting you with the details. Eventually, the out-of-state trip was cancelled and I had clearance to attend the school. I was so amazed! I could actually go! God was right in the middle of all the details and the excitement of spending time in the presence of my Heavenly Father became a reality. I wanted more of God. I wanted to bask in His unconditional love throughout the days of the school. A chance to be in His presence, during the school, was unbelievably peaceful and feeling His love surround me, kept me contented and curious. I would have gone another week! Rev. Dr. Bobby Cabot was full of energy and relayed the stories of how God has enabled her with gifts beyond anything I have ever heard or seen before! If you are on-the-fence about going to a future healing school get off it and go God wants us to grow and learn all we can about Him for as long as we live. I plan to keep going and learning! The presence of the Lord is in this place! Hallelujah! What blessings we received! The Holy Spirit is being loved and magnified here at Manistee UMC! We mustn t be LUKEWARM! One final thought: In a painting you can have two separate colors on the canvas but they can t exist in the same space without becoming something else. Blue and red in the same space become purple. Red and yellow become orange. But the miracle of music is that you can have two different notes occupying the same space each quite different from the other but you don t lose the uniqueness of each note. Together they make the whole richer and deeper. One enhances the other. Now, let me say that again but listen to how it relates to the church and where we are as the United Methodist Church. One enhances the other Listen to how Jeremy Begbie describes this: If I play a note on a piano say, a middle C what I hear fills the whole of my heard space. I cannot identify some zone where the heard note is and a zone where it is not. I do not say It is here but not here. If I play a second note along with the middle C say, the E above it that second note also fills the whole of my heard space, the MANISTEE UMC, page 6 same space as the C. Yet I hear the notes as distinct from each other. The notes interpenetrate, occupy the same heard space, but I can hear them as two notes. Here is not the space of mutual exclusion but a space that allows for overlapping and interpenetration. Suppose I play middle C and open up the string an octave above by silently depressing the appropriate key. The upper C string will vibrate even though it has not been struck. The strings are not in competition, nor do they simply allow each other room to vibrate. The lower string enhances and brings to life the upper string, freeing it to be itself and compromising neither the integrity of the upper string nor its own. (I Cor. 12:26-27) Maybe just maybe music can touch the invisible parts of our hearts and souls, and it can teach us something about the world as God has created it as God sees it as God hopes it can be.
