October 2017 On October 31,1517, 500 years ago this month, a Catholic priest named Martin Luther posted a request to a debate on his church door at Wittenberg. The summons, entitled "Ninety- Five Theses or Disputation on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences," listed 95 statements about some issues Luther had with the Catholic Church, with the way salvation and forgiveness were being taught to God's people, and with the misuse of Scripture. Marin Luther, who was growing in his understanding of faith, scripture and church history and tradition, wanted to engage the church in a debate about these things so that the real mission of the church could be reclaimed. The problem was: no one responded to his invitation, and the debate was never held. Perhaps they didn't understand how important it was? Maybe they were afraid, after all, Luther was confronting the most powerful people on the planet. Yet this was not the end of it? Why are we still talking about this cranky priest and his radical ideas 500 years later? People copied down his work and the newly invented printing press was used to distribute it throughout Europe and the British Isles. Deliberations were held, people talked, the Scripture was studied and the Holy Spirit moved in the Church again and the world was changed. "But that was then, this is now," as they say. "Times have changed, why do we need to look back 500 years to the monk and his worries about the church?" There is a simple answer. We Christians continue to be distracted by culture, power and money and needs to be brought back to having Scripture as the sole source of its faith, life, and direction for ministry. Unless we have Scripture at the source of who we are and what we do as the Body of Christ, we are simply building on a haze, on the changing whims of culture, and the political winds of the moment. Without Scripture, what we say and do has no more importance or value in the Kingdom of God than any other human institution or social club might. Without a genuine regard for and understanding of the Scriptures of the Old Testament and New Testament, we really have no true sense of what Jesus said and did, or what the disciples taught, or what the Apostle Paul was so concerned about. If we ignore the Bible every time it contradicts or challenges our sensibilities, why are we worrying with studying the Bible at all? What's the point? As a congregation, we find ourselves in the middle of a sermon series on building up the Body of Christ in Mars, PA. These sermons are challenging and intended to help modern Christians experience a reformation of what it means to be a Christian and to challenge the conventional notion of what it means to be a Christian, a Follower of Jesus, and a member of the Body of Christ. It is my prayer that you will be encouraged in your faith, equipped to join Jesus on the mission field, and enabled to have a growing and maturing faith. I guess it's a good thing that Martin Luther decided to get a discussion going about ways the church could reform all those many years ago. May we continue to be, in the watch words of the Protestant Reformation, the church reformed and always reforming, according to the Word of God and the call of the Holy Spirit. Quality Gardens is located on the left off of 228 E, just past the Mars Middle School. World Wide Communion Sunday Sunday, October 1st at both 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. Worship Services. We will be celebrating via regular communion with elements being served. October 1st Collection for Glade Run Food Bank can be left in Tarry N Talk. Help reach out and support our local Food Bank!

4 AppleFest Saturday, October 7 10am until 4pm Stop over at the Mars UP Walking Taco booth with pumpkin painting and more!! Youth Fundraiser at Primanti Brothers Starting now, Our youth group is running a fundraiser with Primanti Brothers in Cranberry. All you have to do is pick up a Hometown Edge ID card located in Tarry and Talk and go to Primanti Brothers. When your server presents you with the bill, show your Hometown Edge ID, and ten percent of your total bill (includes alcohol, merchandise, and gift cards) will be donated back to the youth of this church. The fundraiser runs until the end of the year, so if you plan to make a trip to Primanti Brothers once a month, you can help support the youth of the church. If you have any questions, please see Andrew. Heritage Sunday, October 22, 2017 Heritage Sunday is wonderful day that celebrates both the rich heritage of Mars UP Church and faith tradition. During the 11:00 Service, we will he recognizing the 25yr and 50 year anniversaries of church members. Included BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION OF 80+ MEMBERS AFTER THE 11:00 SERVICE, THEIR WILL BE A CELEBRATION IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL FOR ALL THOSE OVER 80 YEARS YOUNG. in the 11am service will be a special performance by George Balderose on the bag pipes. Mr. Balderose also performed for last year s Sunday service.

6 Do you know what the banners represent in the front of the church Sanctuary? The liturgical colors of the Christian year are white, purple, red and green. White is used for special days or seasons in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, such as Christmas and Easter. Purple marks the seasons of penitence and preparation, Advent and Lent. Red is the color for Pentecost and is often used for ordination services. Red or Purple is appropriate for Passion/Palm Sunday. Green is used for all other time periods (called Ordinary Time) not marked by a specific festival or season.

8 Mars UP Church Hosted 100+ Ministers, Elders and Visitors for a Beaver-Butler Presbytery meeting and Dinner on Tuesday, September 26th. Special Thank you to all those who volunteered endless hours to make this important night possible. Deacons prepared a meal of Ham loaf, potatoes, Glazed carrots and Cherry and Peach Cobbler!! YUM! YUM! Session has approved the adding of some new technology to our Sanctuary. The church awarded the project to CZ Sound to do the addition of some media to our worship service. Watch for upcoming media additions in the form of commercial quality TV s to aid in our worship services.

9 The Nominating Committee will soon be meeting to work on obtaining members of Mars UP that wish to be an active Elder or Deacon. The term is for three years and each Elder and Deacon will serve on a committee for those three years. Committees are: Membership, Mission and Outreach, Christian Education, Worship, Buildings and Grounds and Stewardship(only Elder) If you would like to be a Deacon or Elder for the new term, please let the office know or someone on the Nominating Committee.
