The intention is for the protection of the unborn and the for mothers who face difficult pregnancies. May they receive special blessings for the safe birth of their child.

You may have the Sanctuary Lamp memorialized for a sick person, a deceased family member or friend, or as a special intention. The weekly donation for this is $25. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE: That first Easter morning was confusing. Jesus was missing and Mary Magdalene, Peter and John did not know what to do. In family life there are confusing moments when we don t know what to do. Like the apostles we are Easter people when we believe and trust in each other even when all seems lost. PRAY THE ROSARY Mass will not be celebrated this Tuesday, but the Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 AM. The intention is for the protection of the unborn and the for mothers who face difficult pregnancies. May they receive special blessings for the safe birth of their child. FIRST FRIDAY Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the First Friday of the month dates back to the revelations of Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun, who lived in the 17th Century. April 6th is First Friday. Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church at 9 AM. At 6 PM, St. Bernard will host a Pot Luck Supper, followed by Stations of the Cross at 7 PM. We encourage your participation in these parish events. SECOND COLLECTION Our Second Collection at Mass this weekend is the Monthly Collection for April. Thank you for your support in helping to offset our extraordinary parish expenses. PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY Every first and third Saturday at 10 AM in the Sacred Heart Church Hall. This delightful group works on their prayer shawls and lap robes at these sessions, and in between at home. When completed, they are just lovely! They are blessed by Monsignor Guerrera and then presented to those in need of some caring and loving warmth. If you know of someone who would enjoy a shawl, please call the Kent office and the group will be happy to comply with your request promptly. If you know of someone who would like a visit from Monsignor to bring Holy Eucharist and have their confessions heard, please give the parish office a call and we will be happy to make arrangements. We continue to be blessed with wonderful Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who make regular visits to the homebound and those in nursing homes. Their ministry is a very special one, and your works are very much appreciated.

3 EASTER SUNDAY Dear Parishioners, Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! This ancient greeting sums up what we celebrate this Easter Sunday. The Resurrection is the foundation and cornerstone of our faith. As St. Paul says: If Christ has not been raised, your faith is in vain; you are still in your sins (1 Cor 15:17). May we live as a people deeply touched by the Resurrection, and may our encounter with the risen Lord on our journey of faith transform us as He did His Disciples. When we live the new life of the Resurrection we become the best version of ourselves. We become what St. Augustine referred to as an Easter People, a people transformed into disciples and stewards. TWO HEARTS PREGNANCY CARE CENTER Thank you for your many lovely and generous donations to the Two Hearts Pregnancy Care Center in Torrington. We remind you that the donation box is located inside the side entrance of Sacred Heart. Donations of layettes, disposable diapers, baby wipes, baby blankets, gently used winter one piece snowsuits, gently used baby clothing, and bedding items are all needed and gratefully accepted. Please note that car seats, cribs, baby carriers, and strollers cannot be accepted here. Many thanks. 4 OUR FAITH, OUR FUTURE THE 2018 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Thank you to the parish families who have made a gift or pledge commitment to the 2018 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. This is a tangible opportunity for us to help individuals and families through the many charitable programs made possible by the Appeal. Every gift makes a difference. Please join us in making your gift to this year s Annual Appeal, Our Faith, Our Future. WHY IS THE LAMB ASSOCIATED WITH EASTER? Before the coming of Christ, the Jews sacrificed lambs during their Passover festival in atonement for their sins. Many of the early Christians were Jews. It was natural that the Christians associated the sacrifice of a lamb with the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross. That is why Jesus is called the Lamb of God, the one, perfect sacrifice that could take away all our sins. WHAT DOES EASTER MEAN? The word Easter probably comes from Eostre, an Anglo-Saxon goddess of Springtime. Easter comes at the start of Spring, signaling new life. In the original language of the Gospels, however, the Greek word pascha is used for the Aramaic form of the Hebrew word pesach, which means Passover. The Roman languages later used the Hebrew-Greek- Latin root for their words denoting Easter: Italian (Pasqua), Spanish (Pascua), and French (Paques). WHAT S THE LEGEND OF EASTER LILIES? The Easter Lily is often used to decorate church altars during this holy season. A legend says that after Jesus rose from the dead, wherever He walked, an Easter Lily sprang up and blossomed from the soil. The trumpet-like flowers are pure white with gold-fringed centers. WHERE ARE EASTER EGGS FROM? The egg represents new life, The little chick that emerges from the egg s shell symbolizes Jesus emerging from the tomb. In France when children go to confession on Holy Saturday, they take eggs to give as gifts to the priest. In Ireland, the fast of Lent ends with a breakfast of eggs on Easter morning. In some European countries, people use empty shells to decorate Easter egg trees. Each year on Easter Monday, an egg rolling contest takes place on the lawn of the White House. WHERE DOES THE EASTER BUNNY COME FROM? In ancient times, the hare, as the rabbit was known to the Egyptians, was a symbol for the moon. As we have already seen, it is the moon that determines when Easter will take place each year. Thus, the rabbit became a symbol of the coming of Easter.

CONFIRMATION: Confirmation for high school students in all of our Member Churches will be held next Sunday April 8th at 8:30 AM in the Sacred Heart church hall.

FIRST COMMUNION: The next class for students preparing to receive the Sacrament in the Spring of 2018 will be held this Wednesday, April 4th, from 3:30 4:30 PM at Sacred Heart.

Any questions, please call the parish office. SUNDAY APRIL 15th Our final GIFT PRO- GRAM of this school year will be held on Sunday, April 15th beginning with the 10 AM Mass at Sacred Heart. EASTER DUTY All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. This precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless it is fulfilled for a just cause at some other time during the year (Can. #920). In reference to this law, in the United States the Easter season is considered from the First Sunday of Lent until Trinity Sunday.
