Dio. Pastoral Assistant Dear Members of St. Perpetua, The Church in her wisdom gives us forty days of fasting during Lent, but fifty days of feasting throughout the Easter Season. This tells us something important about our Christian faith: it is more about joy than about sorrow. The victory of the Resurrection surpasses the power of sin. Christ has not just won the battle; He has vanquished the foe. The gift of Christ outweighs the offense of Adam, and overflows so much that the scales are always tipped in favor of humanity. A sense of Paschal abundance is at the heart of out liturgy, especially at Easter. Many elements of our Eucharistic liturgies will help to keep the Easter spirit alive for the next seven weeks. Enjoy and appreciate them: The beautiful Pascal Candle or Christ-candle stands at the ambo where the scriptures are proclaimed; it will lead our entrance procession each week; The procession of the Lamb and the festive children s banners will enhance many of our liturgies; the paschal lamb is one of our most ancient symbols of Christ; Each Eucharist during the Easter Season will begin at the baptismal pool at the front of the church, with the Rite of Sprinkling, giving thanks to God for the waters of baptism and renewing our baptismal commitment; The Sacraments of Initiation will be celebrated throughout the Easter Season: infant Baptism, First Communion celebrations (April 29, 30 & May 6, 7) and Confirmation for our teenagers at the Cathedral of Christ the Light (April 29); The Alleluia and Easter hymns leading to hymns of the Holy Spirit hold special prominence between now and Pentecost; The Blessed Virgin Mary is our special companion throughout these weeks: she who stood at the cross of her Son, she who waited in anticipation with Jesus disciples in the upper room, she who was present when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles. Celebrate well, then, the great mysteries of our faith: Creation, Redemption, Resurrection, Pentecost. We arise and go with the risen Lord towards the fullness of light and peace. Time and eternity intersect. Finitude and infinity lose their boundaries. All creation is gathered to a great oneness - now, in our Great Fifty Days. Alleluia! Karen Goodshaw, School Principal kgoodshaw@csdo.org, Suzanne Kozel School Office Manager skozel@csdo.org, David Ramirez Maintenance Manager dramirez@stperpetua.org, x214 Lorena Rojas, Housekeeping lrojas@stperpetua.org A special word of thanks to our Parish Staff, committees and volunteers who helped to make Easter come alive - all the behind-the-scenes work of cleaning, preparing, planning, rehearsing and carrying out the needed tasks and ministries. Music, flowers, environment, set-up and clean-up...and a rainy-day Easter egg hunt still successfully enjoyed by the children, thanks to the Knights of Columbus. Happy Easter Season! 3 Welcome into the Catholic Community Teens - Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in his great mercy gave us a new birth to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead (1 Peter 1:3). This opening verse from today s Second Reading focuses in on a theme of mercy that is central to today s celebration. Today s Responsorial Psalm also connects with this theme of mercy. Thus, it was quite fitting that on the Second Sunday of Easter in 2000, at the Mass celebrating the canonization of St. Faustina Kowalska, Pope John Paul II inaugurated what is now known as Divine Mercy Sunday, celebrated every year on the Second Sunday of Easter. Throughout these fifty days of Easter Time, we rejoice heartily in proclaiming Jesus Resurrection from the dead. This is at the heart of the Christian understanding of mercy: that death and despair have no power over the living hope of the Resurrection. We sacramentally celebrate this lived experience of mercy every time we gather for Eucharist and in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, which Christ instituted in today s Gospel reading. The Church identifies seven Corporal Works of Mercy: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, shelter the homeless, visit the sick, visit the imprisoned, and bury the dead. Spend some time this week learning about each of the Works of Mercy. Examine your life and see which of these Works of Mercy you can make a part of your life as a Catholic Christian. Some may be integrated into your daily life relatively easily. Others may require more intentional effort. Select one of the Corporal Works of Mercy that you may not have yet done and go out and do it! Take a risk! Make a difference! In Youth Ministry at St. Perpetua we gather to see how we use our faith to make a difference as the song calls on us to Go Make A Difference! This week Confirmation Candidates for their discernment interview in preparation for the Sacrament they receive on Saturday. Youth Group takes a break, returning the week of May 1. Questions? Drop Gary a note. Teens, the Gospel story this week ends with Jesus telling us not to rely on our eyes alone to believe. We need to believe even though we can t see Jesus face-to-face. What are some things that can help us see Jesus without relying on our eyes? (Think the Bible stories, priests, teachers, examples of love and kindness even at difficult times, just to name a few!) THANK YOU Our community changed lives this Lent, and CRS Rice Bowl wants to say thank you! Don t forget to turn in your CRS Rice Bowl. Please turn the money collected into a check made out to St. Perpetua with Rice Bowl in the memo section and place it in the collection basket or drop it off at the parish office as soon as possible. Congratulations! This weekend we welcome the following children into our Parish Community through the waters of Baptism: Dominic Michael Moran son of Brendan & Renee Moran Davis James Polichio son of Joseph & Noelle Polichio Grace Marie Boccabella daughter of John & Karen Boccabella May our community embrace Dominic, Davis and Grace and may our word and example be a reflection of God's love for them. Let us offer our joy-filled prayers and congratulations as a sign of our support and welcome! 4 Divine Mercy Sunday I know what you re thinking. They held all things in common? Boy, you just couldn t do that. Of course you could. You did it in your childhood. Was it so terrible? A while back my husband Ben renovated our basement. Our friend Karen asked if she could live there for a short time. We weighed the pros of sharing our tiny house with her laughter every day, and the introduction of the 6pm Happy Hour and the cons. Funny, I can t remember any of them now. At first we were all desperately polite. Her life was her own. We pretended not to notice when she came in. We cooked our separate suppers and assigned her a small corner of the refrigerator and a single shelf in the cupboard. This was a formal, temporary arrangement. In time her fortunes would change and she would go off to her lovely, lonely condo. Isn t that the American Dream? Nine years came and went. All of our fortunes changed. We remembered the way we used to live when we were kids, sharing closets and clothes and clotheslines. I still suspect her of making off with the mates of two of my socks. None of us knows whose turn it is to buy the milk. None of us can remember how we used to live. Today, on Divine Mercy Sunday, she s getting married and moving out. We are bereft. Now comes the separation of goods. Coffee pot? Hers. Blender? Mine. Dog? Ours. Bitter custody battle to ensue. Hearts? Overflowing with gratitude that this beloved friend was willing to share all things in common with us. Such is the kingdom of the Risen One. What happy memories do you have of sharing things in common?
