If a Catholic were to walk into many Lutheran Churches today, he or she would not feel out of place. The altar is centrally located, vested in purple for Lenten Time and flanked by a lectern and pulpit. In older Lutheran churches one might find a communion rail. Daylight might stream in from a stained-glass window depicting the Virgin Mary and the Christ child. A Catholic would also feel comfortable at a typical Lutheran Sunday liturgy. A procession is followed by introductory and penitential rites, the Scripture readings are the same as those read at a Catholic Mass on most Sundays and bread and wine are blessed and shared during Communion. Many Lutherans share with us a belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. The common elements of both traditions is an important theme of this past year s historic commemorations. On Oct. 31, 2017, Christians around the world marked the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Martin Luther is traditionally believed to have nailed his 95 Theses to All Saints Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on Oct. 31, 1517, thus catalyzing Protestant reformations across Europe. This anniversary celebrates more than 50 years of official dialogue between the Lutheran and Roman Catholic churches following the Second Vatican Council. Though today s Lutherans and Catholics may feel more unified, obstacles remain to sacramental unity between the churches. The 1999 Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification allowed Lutherans and Catholics to express a common understanding of justification by God s grace through faith in Christ. The central issues for which Lutherans and Catholics mutually condemned each other in the 16th century are no longer church-dividing. The issues of church and ministry particularly the ordination of women, married clergy and apostolic succession are today s main challenges. I am personally grateful to all the couples in our parish who share an interfaith marriage. Our community has been blessed by the presence of our Protestant, especially our Lutheran, Methodist and Presbyterian, brothers and sisters. They demonstrate that there exist ways to celebrate their Protestant identity while also sharing partnership and prayer with their Catholic spouses. Dr. Flanigan is a wonderful example, as his wife, Jamie Polson, is the Pastor of Family Ministries at Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church. Their daughter attends St. Perpetua School, Zach has offered theology and scripture seminars at LOPC, and Jamie is an active school mom at St. Perpetua s. All of them as a family feel at home and share the common bond of their Christian faith in both communities. The beautiful hymn we sometimes sing at Mass states the case: In Christ there is no east or west, in Him no south or north, but one great fam ly bound by love throughout the whole wide earth! I ll say AMEN! to that. Fr. John Kasper, OSFS If you missed Zach Flanigan s presentation this week he will offer it again on Monday at 9:15 in our Chapel, across the street from the church and school. 3 St. Patrick's Day Corned Beef Dinner 'Tis the luck of the Irish that you are invited to the Knights of Columbus Corned Beef Dinner on St. Patrick's Day, Saturday, March 17. Due to our Parish Hall construction, the St. Perpetua Knights are co-hosting this event with the Knights from Santa Maria Church at their Parish Hall in Orinda: 40 Santa Maria Way. Social hour begins at 6 p.m., with the delicious buffet feast served about 7 p.m. We will be wonderfully entertained with Irish music and dancers. To RSVP call Dave Tedesco at Tickets are $25 for adults, $15 for teens, and children 12 and under eat free. Erin Go Bragh! St. Perpetua Finance Council Year-End 2017 Report to the Parish Parish operations finished calendar year 2017 with a $35,000 surplus, due in large part to cost control measures that exceeded our shortfall in total revenues. While we have overcome lower than expected Sunday plate and unrestricted donation revenues with a variety of expense reduction measures the past few years, all those cost savings have now been realized and we will need to increase total operating revenues in 2018 if we are going to be able to maintain our current programs and ministries. We urge all parishioners to consider increasing their monthly Sunday plate or online giving contributions to help the parish continue to advance the goals of the St. Perpetua faith community. Construction on the new community center is progressing, with foundation work expected to be completed in March Please continue to make or accelerate your initial pledge payments as we enter this time of significant construction spending. A follow-on Capital Campaign will be announced in the coming weeks to deal with the significant increase in construction costs we are experiencing as we push toward project completion in early spring of Our 2018 Annual Bishop s Appeal goal has increased significantly, so please be as generous as possible for this important Diocesan-wide initiative. (Detailed 2017 financial information is available from the parish office upon request). Operation Rice Bowl: Fourth Week of Lent Encounter Andrise We encounter Andrise, a teacher in Haiti who knows the importance of forming young people who will give back to the community and their country. Reflect on the role teachers have played in bringing you closer to God and your community. How can you support those, worldwide, who are forced to flee their homes to find safety or better opportunities? Visit for more. Celebrating 500 th Anniversary of Filipino Catholic Evangelization The Diocese of Oakland will embark on a 4-year spiritual journey to celebrate the 500 th Anniversary of Filipino Catholic Evangelization. While this is a Filipino celebration, Bishop Barber envisions this as a Diocesan celebration and will officiate the Kick-Off Mass on Friday, March 16 at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the Light. Everyone is invited. Lenten Reconciliation Service: Thursday, March 15, 7:00 p.m. We'll examine our hearts, listen to the Word of God and pledge ourselves to grow deeper in faith, hope and love. Several priests will be available for individual confessions. Science & Astronomy Lecture in Memory of Ron Olowin St. Mary's College has established an annual Physics & Astronomy lecture series in memory of our parishioner, Dr. Ron Olowin, who died last August. The first in this annual event will take place on Monday, March 12th at 2:00 p.m. in Galileo Hall, Room 201 on St. Mary's College campus. The presenter is Dr. Jessie Christiansen. Her topic will be: "On the Road to a Billion Planets" - describing her work in the field of exoplanets and the incredibly diverse set of planetary types and planetary systems that are emerging. Dr. Christiansen will talk about her progress, with particular reference to the NASA Kepler mission and its role in pushing forward the exoplanet frontiers. She will describe NASA s next planet-finding mission TESS, due to launch in April. The lecture is open to the public.

I m looking for some simple equipment such as a table saw, band saw, drill press, etc. Thank you, Oscar North American Lourdes volunteers will present a 90- minute prayerful virtual pilgrimage at Christ the King parish on March 18, at 3:00 pm. During this guided Lourdes experience, you will immerse yourself in the Gospel message of Lourdes as given by Our Lady to St. Bernadette. Fourth Sunday of Lent It s hard to read those powerful words, those iconic words, those life-changing words of Jesus found early in John s gospel, and not wonder how many tens of thousands of times the great Billy Graham led people down for an altar call after reading those very words to them. We can imagine him, in his youth and in his graceful old age, proclaiming to the thousands gathered in the arena and another million watching on television, that God so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth unto Him should not perish but have everlasting life. I find myself slipping into the King James language for this famous text, partly because I m imagining how it sounded coming from his eloquent tongue. There are some theories as to why Catholics loved him so much and felt so comfortable with him. Certainly there was closeness there because of the urgency of the Gospel. He never wavered in his absolute love for Christ, and him crucified. Catholics understand the long view of history. We have been with Christ from the beginning of the Church, on that terrible Good Friday when, from the Cross, he gave his Mother to us, and us to his Mother. We understand about holding fast. In season and out, Billy Graham held fast to Christ. He lived in the exact same culture that we do, but he never took his eyes off the prize, which he has now achieved through God s grace: life on high with Christ Jesus. In this era of the New Evangelization, this great lion of Christ showed us how to draw souls to heaven. What a welcome he must have received there last week. In what ways are you helping to draw souls to heaven?
