1 Faith News Volume 19, Issue 2 February 2016 Faith Lutheran Church PO Box 175 Wolverton, MN (218) faith@wtc-mail.net Rev. Clay Ellingson, Pastor th Avenue S. Moorhead, MN (218) It is the mission of Faith Lutheran Church: To gather prayerfully as the Body of Christ; To grow in faith, love, and service; To go into the world joyfully as disciples. Sunday School, 9:00 a.m. Sunday Worship 10:00 a.m. Holy Communion on the first and third Sunday of the month. Coffee Fellowship 11:00 a.m. From Our Pastor- Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ; The Lenten season is upon us. You will recall that last year during Lent I travelled with a group to Israel and Jordan. So this year during our Lenten services we will be reflecting upon the land of that region and how it shaped and influenced the people and the Bible. Following are a couple of quotes from a book titled "The Land and the Book: An Introduction to the World of the Bible." "The history of any land and people is influenced to a considerable degree by their geographical environment. This includes not only the natural features such as climate, soil, topography, etc., but also the geopolitical relationships with neighboring areas. This is especially true for Palestine, a small and relatively poor country, which derives its main importance from its unique centralized location at a juncture of continents and a crossroads for the nations." "Geography played a particularly important role in the biblical story. Both the location of Palestine and the physical features of the land itself were instrumental in shaping the history of the people of Israel. Although a small country, Palestine was bordered for centuries by major players in the shaping of the modern world, while within its boundaries significant variations in climate and topography influenced the development of a surprisingly diverse culture. These external and internal geographic influences produced two results: On the one hand, Palestine was a land bound by the common experience of people exposed to the same international influences and pressures; on the other, it was a land divided by localizing geographic features that often separated its inhabitants into highly individual cultural enclaves. The result of these diverse influences was a land more often divided than united, more often ruled by others than ruled by itself, and more often confessing its beliefs in diverse accents than with a unified voice." We will once again be using Holden Evening Prayer as our liturgy and music for our Lenten worship. So come for supper from 6:15-7:00pm and then worship at 7:15pm, and we will spend some time learning more about "The Land and the Book." Peace, Pastor Ellingson February Food Pantry Item: Soups Faith Tuesday mornings 9:00-10:00 Thursday 7:00-8:00 PM

5 All About Thankoffering Women s offerings: a brief history The idea of collecting donations in small offering boxes goes back to the very early 1800s, when women formed mite or cent societies to raise money. Mite boxes were given out as fundraising tools to collect pennies for the support of church projects and foreign missionaries. These women-led cent societies, platforms for social activism as well as evangelism in the 19th century, published their own literature, Bible studies and other materials advocating around issues such as child labor, literacy and prison reform. In time, larger missionary and ladies aid societies developed out of this work because there was such an overwhelming demand not only for foreign missionary support but for support at home. These women s groups funded needs in their local churches as well as local community projects. Their capacity for fundraising was acknowledged and generally welcomed by their congregations. Thankofferings: continuing the tradition Thankofferings show gratitude for God s blessings and give us an important and tangible way to express that gratitude. It is a tradition grounded in our celebration of community, of meeting together to joyfully give thanks for what God has given us. Thankofferings have always been, and still are, our opportunity to say thank you to God in both significant and ordinary moments. Create your own Thankoffering container! Use this label to create your own reusable container for thankoffering. There's no wrong way to make a thankoffering container. Cut out the label. Grab a container (mug, glass jar, etc.). Wrap the label around the container. Attach the ends together with tape or attach the label directly to the container with tape or glue. Order an Easter Lily to beautify our church on Easter Sunday Morning! Cost: $8.00/plant for Easter Lilies (6 ) $19.00/plant for Triple Easter Lilies (10 ) $7.00/plant for Mums (pastel colors) $18.00 for Hydrangea (8 in pink or blue) Orders must be placed no later than Thursday Feb. 18 The flowers will be delivered directly to the church. On the order blank below, please indicate the number of pants you wish, and if they are being given in honor or memory of a specific individual. There will be an insert in the Easter bulletins with a list of those so honored. Attach payment for the plants to this form and drop in the offering plate, or drop it by the church office. Plants can be picked up after the Worship service on Easter Morning.
