1 2017 Lund Lutheran Church Pastor Jim Osvold County Highway 21 Detroit Lakes, MN A member of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ
2 March 2017 Redeemed There is a story of a young teen-aged boy who wanted to build a toy boat. He worked many hours and carefully and lovingly created a mini masterpiece. It was a replica of a famous three-masted sailing ship with scores of tiny rope riggings and crisp white sails. He applied several coats of paint and varnish to the woodwork, making it gleam so much, he could see his face mirrored in the white and golden colors of the ship s sides. It was sea-worthy in that it was water tight and perfectly balanced. Therefore, on a special occasion he brought it to a neighboring river and launched his vessel onto the glassy stream. It glided slowly and gently with the water reflecting a picture of the boat, the sky and the landscape. The boy was thrilled with his creation. It looked perfect! Suddenly, an unexpected wind from a storm front blew onto the river s surface, and the white sails were grabbed by its fierceness. The boy jumped into the water to retrieve his boat, but the stormdriven vessel was pushed far out into the river s current and the boat disappeared as it sailed off into distant and dangerous waters. He was heartbroken and left the river s bank, returning to search along the banks many times that summer for his beloved little vessel. Several years later, he was walking the sidewalk of a near city when he was suddenly stopped in his tracks. He looked into the window of a dingy shop that sold used and antique items. There in the front display was a tattered and half-broken toy boat. Its sails had holes and were soiled, one of the masts was cracked and hanging limply to the side, the paint was scratched and blackened by dirt. But even sothere was no doubt- this was the miniature ship he had built years before. His heart beat faster as he flung open the door, striding up to the counter where the store owner was looking over his ledgers. The young man declared, That little boat you have in the window is 2
3 my boat! It got away from me one day on the river and I want it back! The man looked up from his figuring and then at the prospective customer who was pointing excitedly towards the store window. With a wry grin on his face, he replied, Well, that might have been your boat, but it belongs to me now. It was a lost cause when I got it, quite worthless, and I was thinking I might just throw it away, but now I can see that it has value to you. If you want it, you will have to pay me for it. Glancing down at his ledger, the shop keeper saw that he had a value on the boat of $2.00. He looked at the eager face of the young man. Then coldly he spoke, Give me $ for the boat and you can have it back The young man knew that was an outrageous price, the entire sum he had put aside for his college books. But without a moment s hesitation, he exclaimed, I ll pay it! He wrote the check, went to the window and lovingly and tenderly picked up that little shipwreck. Cradling it in his arms he softly spoke, Little boat, you are now twice mine. I made you, now I have bought you. You are twice mine. As we move into Lenten season we are reminded that Jesus paid for our Redemption. What does the word redeem mean? It means to buy back or to set someone free by paying a ransom. The young man paid a huge ransom to buy back his beloved boat. This is just a small illustration of what it means when we declare Jesus Christ is our Redeemer. God has every right to claim us as His creation. But through our sin, we went lost. Jesus paid with his own blood to ransom us, redeeming us from sin, death and the devil, so that we would know what it means to truly live in the ownership of the Lord. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NIV) we read, 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies. As Christians, we are ransomed to live as the possession of the King. We are adopted into his royal family and bear the King s name. We are his: let us live in that identification and be as devoted to Jesus as he is devoted to us. We are twice His. 3

Robin talked about how we will be searching for a new pastor, by talking to other pastors. We will be working with Shepard of the Lakes on this project. Please keep our search for a new pastor in your prayers, to guide us in our search. I also heard the ladies, along with Les Heimark s help, will be doing a rummage sale on April 7th and 8th. Start putting your items together that you don t use so we can have a lot of things. There will also be another fun day on April 11th with Chris Koosman being the guest speaker at our Bible Study.
