3 aéàxá yüéå à{x ctáàéü The Beginning of Bible Study When Susan and I graduated from college we headed to a little town in West Texas called Seminole. We had not been regular in our worship attendance before then. But in a small town, church was one of the main areas to get to know people and fellowship. So we began to attend the Methodist church. We were welcomed into the life of the church. In the Spring of the first year, our part time youth director invited Susan and me to be counselors at a church youth camp that summer. We said yes and the experience transformed our lives. Those leaders (not me) made the bible come alive. I began to hunger to know more of what was in that book. Unfortunately I didn t have one and didn t know where to get one. It wasn t until that fall that I bought my first bible. It was a King James Version and not only did I not understand what was in the bible, I didn t understand half of the words either. But I plowed on. It just seemed to make sense to me that the bible had to have some thread that wound throughout the book that would help me understand it better. I read about Jesus and the advice that Paul had in the epistles. It was changing the way I thought about myself. We were in Seminole for a total of three years and, since there wasn't much else to do, I read and studied the bible the best I could. I wasn t a pastor. I was just a public school choir director. I was no different than the majority of members in our church that have normal lives and jobs. The beginning of bible study for me was a hunger that God put in my soul to understand that book. I realized it wasn t to understand the book as much as it was to understand God. I didn t have formal training at the time. I just plunged in and trusted the Holy Spirit to lead me into all truth. Jesus said the Holy Spirit would do that and I had no reason not to believe it. At some point a few years later I began to teach a mid week bible study. I have no idea how that started, but I relished the opportunity to share with people what I was learning. That was a perfect example of the saying, God doesn t call the qualified, he qualifies those he has called. After the three years in Seminole we moved to Midland and opened a Christian bookstore. We started our family that September and my bible study turned to more specific things like how to be a good parent. I bought books on what the bible said about parenting. I read them and then put them on the shelf for sale. But I was still interested in what the theme of the bible was. I came to understand that it was God s story of his love for his creation and the call for us to love God back. It is the story of people rejecting God and people placing their whole trust in God. It is the story of a faithful God, a peaceful God, a patient God. That is opposite of what we see in the world today. There are people who have no regard for life killing indiscriminately. There are those who are killing on purpose. And the craziness seems to spread. I have found that those stories don t bother me when I have my eyes on the God who loves. Those people who were killed left this life for a better one. God never said he would do away with sin until He was ready to end the world. Maybe this is the beginning of the end as some say. For me it is a call for me to get closer to my God and I do that through the bible and being the embodiment of God for others. The life I have today started with bible study and it continues with bible study. Blessings, Alan 3
