1 The Monitor April 2014 St. Matthew s United Methodist Church 2738 MacArthur View, San Antonio, Texas Youth Camp for Adults! I will be the Spiritual Director for a women s Emmaus walk on May 15. Many of the leadership in our church went on an Emmaus walk years ago. That is evident by the Spirit of service to God they exhibit. Years ago people who went on the Emmaus walk really couldn t explain it when asked by those who hadn t gone. Most often the response to the question was, You just have to go to understand. That really wasn t a very helpful answer so I would like to explain it a little better. Hopefully those who might be considering going with Susan and I in May will have a better grasp on what people will experience. One way to explain it is that it is a youth camp for adults. It is an experience that changes many people s lives. Like a youth camp you make great new friends. You learn things about God and yourself that help you take your next step in your spiritual journey. You learn what it means to be in community with other Christians and experience it that weekend. There will be 15 different talks given through out the weekend that are designed to challenge us spiritually. I can t tell you how many walks I have been on over the years and I am still blessed when I hear the talks. Most of the time they remind me of something I need for that particular time in my life. After each talk you will have an opportunity to talk about what you heard with a small group. You will be with the same small group over the weekend so you get to know one another. The answer is absolutely not. The 15 who will give talks have been working on their talk for weeks and sometimes months. No one will be singled out. In fact, the pilgrims, those attending the walk for the first time, are just asked to participate in the weekend. There are no set responses that are expected. Everyone responds to the weekend in their own way. Emmaus was designed for the church member that senses that there must be more to the Christian life than what they are experiencing in their local church. It was designed to help people move closer to Christ and understand what God is calling each individual to do. There are some people who didn t have a personal relationship with Christ before they went and established one during the walk. That is important, but not the primary reason. It is also for the person who may have been a Christian all their life and wants and needs more. Ladies, if God is encouraging you to go, don t wait to sign up. We have forms in the foyer of the church and in the office. One of the church members will sponsor you and help you get ready, drive you to Mt. Wesley, take you to dinner, pray for you, help your family while you are gone and pick you up when it is over. Susan and I hope you will come along for the blessing. 3 God Has a Plan for St. Matthews April 2014 The trustees are working hard to fulfill Gods plan, with your help, to keep our church in a welcoming condition. This is your church to fill with your presence, your help, your smiles, and your prayers to help achieve our goals. The Trustee's need your input as a member to make this all possible. Our budget allows only for a cleaning service three time a week, no full time custodian. Our four million dollar campus (replacement value) can only marginally be maintained with this effort, so, we must fill the gap with volunteers. We are planning a big work day on April the 12 th to prepare for Easter. Time: 9am to???? Bring your energy, rags, wax, vacuum and cleaning materials. Look around and see what needs to be cleaned or repaired. Whatever time you can give us we will appreciate it. Thank you for participating on work day. In March the trustees accomplished: Painting the shed at the parsonage. Thanks Wes and Joe Two door closers were replaced. Thanks Larry A replacement vacuum was purchased for the church. Sanctuary A/C repair was accomplished. Fellowship Window repair is in progress Narthex trim in progress of being repaired Parking lot burned out lights were replaced. A lift was rented. Cost about $ The kitchen remodel only needs some hot water issues resolved to be complete. The day school is very happy for the upgraded facility. Memorial Plaque on the Haddad youth building is being replaced with a substantial plaque. April (our goals) Working on getting a new carpet for the education wing hallway. ($ ) Repairs on Scout Annex ($200.) Repairs on shed ($50.00) Replacing Sanctuary light bulbs with LED blubs. ($1900) They will last about 10 to 15 years, and brighten the Sanctuary, while saving energy Repair overhang on education building ($200.00) Sanctuary thermostats need to be replaced We are preparing to to paint all wood building this spring. We will be doing these things as we get the funds in. Your trustees at work 3

5 Spring Break Intergenerational Mission Trip For the past two years, members of St. Matts have participated in a spring break mission trip to Bastrop, to join in mission with Wilderness Ridge Boys Camp. The first year was spent working to clear ground for a new location, forced by the ravaging fires the fall before. Our next year was spent as counselors and assistants for their well-attended spring break elementary age camp. This year, after no response from the camp after numerous attempts, we looked for another outlet for our mission work. We were unable to make that happen, and decided to just try again next year. At the last moment, the opportunity arose to do some work locally for a family known to the church. Wednesday, March 12, we learned of notice served by the city for immediate action. Friday, March 14, three adults and five youth began work replacing rotted windows, scraping and sanding siding, and applying primer to the house. Another workday followed Sunday afternoon. Because of the timing, we were unable to recruit other than word of mouth. This project is not complete. Over the next month, we will be returning to complete other needed repairs: more window replacements, siding replacement, weatherproofing, priming and painting of the exterior. We will do interior work as volunteers are able. We are now recruiting volunteers. Our next workday is scheduled for April 5. Contact Tim Diemert or Larry Etter ( ) to learn more. Larry will be returning some weekdays over the next few weeks, and could use some help with carpentry and related issues. Come and help us live out our mission statement: The mission of St. Matthew s United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ by: Reaching, Connecting, Engaging and Serving. Serving others is a spiritual discipline, just like worship and prayer Council On Ministries The Council on Ministries would like to invite anyone interested in the Ministries of St. Matthews to attend a fact finding meeting on May 4 th at 9:45 in the sanctuary. This will be a short meeting gathering information from anyone who is currently involved in a ministry with the church or who has a ministry they would like to see started. Please be prepared to give a very short talk on your ministry telling what your ministry is, what your ministry has done or what you would like your ministry to accomplish and what you might need to further your ministry. This meeting is open to anyone interested in St. Matthew UMC For additional information and/or questions contact Jeanne or jadams@redmac.net. 5

8 St. Matthew S Day School chatter As the saying goes April showers bring May flowers, we are rejoicing in the showers of the blessings that the lord is continuing to pour onto St. Matthew s UMC Day School. Our enrollment is blossoming and we are finding it hard, but a blessing to have to place families on a waiting list. A favorite saying is if it s a problem to have, at least let it be a good problem to have. Last month s Trike-A-Thon was such a success; we were blessed and excited at the opportunity to bless others as we have been blessed. This month is an exciting and interesting month. We have so much planned in April. This month, during school and church we will be celebrating Palm Sunday. This year, Palm Sunday falls on April 13 th. Throughout the week our children will have lessons to learn the importance of celebrating Palm Sunday. Then we will teach the children daily bible lessons during the week of Passover, starting April 14 th. As the week ends, St. Matthew s Day School will be closed in honor of Good Friday on April 18 th. We would like to wish everyone a happy Easter on April 20 th, and to remember the importance of the reason we celebrate Easter. The following Tuesday is Earth/Arbor day so the children will be indulging in all sorts of activates that promote making our world a better place with learning about the water cycle, gardening, plants and their parts, and even photosynthesis! Be sure to take a look in and around the garden at all the learning opportunities and fun that the children will be having this week. Starting on the 21 st of the month we will celebrate Fiesta with fun days leading up to our parade at the end of the week. Monday 21 st will be wear your favorite Fiesta clothes; Tuesday 22 nd, crazy shoe day; Wednesday 23 rd crazy hat day; and Thursday 24 th wear your favorite crazy socks to get you ready to march in the parade! The St. Matthew s annual Fiesta Parade will take place on April 24th so come out and enjoy the parade as we show off our hard work and dedication that our families and teachers put into their floats. It s that time again St. Matthew s UMC Day School Breakfast Taco Fundraiser. Come out and enjoy a taco to help support the school in obtaining new gym equipment. You can place an order in advance if you are unable to make it or take some extras home to share with your family and friends, or even grab breakfast for your co-workers. The more tacos we sell gets us closer to reaching our goal to obtain the new gym equipment. We know that with your help and our hard work we can make this fundraiser a great success! On May 24 th, 2014, St. Matthew s UMC Church and Day School will hold a rummage sale to benefit upgrades to the playground. When you do your spring cleaning, please save items that you don t mind parting with as in mid May we will start accepting items for the sale. 21 Shopping for Jesus What if every time we purchase something on line the church gets a percent of what we spend? I would call that shopping for Jesus. The United Methodist Church has put together an opportunity for us to do just that. Certain stores have agreed to do this to boost their online shopping. There are a lot of stores that we shop at all the time. It is easy. Go to: and set up an account in the JOIN NOW box. That will take you to a page where you can view all the stores. Go to the top right hand of the page and find our church by typing in Saint Matthews San Antonio. When you click on the name you will see the church in the middle of the page. Then click on the How It Works tab to learn the rest. Every time anyone who is signed up purchases through the UMCMarket, we will receive a percent for St. Matthew s. 21
