Recognizing that each person is a unique creation of God, we endeavor to provide a strong spiritual, academic, and emotional foundation enabling students to realize their full potential. Student Action Code I believe that Jesus is present in each of my classmates and in my teachers, therefore all my actions will show respect for Jesus.

5 Religious Education News The Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord ends the season of Christmas. A second manifestation or epiphany happens at Jesus baptism in the Jordan River and his public ministry begins. Q: Why was Jesus baptized if he was born without sin? A: Our Lord voluntarily submitted himself to the baptism of St. John, intended for sinners, in order to fulfill all righteousness. Jesus gesture is a manifestation of his self-emptying. The Spirit who had hovered over the waters of the first creation descended then on Christ as a prelude of the new creation and the Father revealed Jesus as his beloved Son. (CCC 1224) In the Sacrament of Baptism we become children of God and all Catholics are joined with Jesus Christ and one another. At baptism parents and godparents accept responsibility for raising their child in the practice of the faith by participation in Mass and religious instruction. Do you remember your baptism? What did it mean to witness the baptism of your child or godchild; their anointing in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit? Religious Education Classes Pre-K (4 year old) through 8 th Grade Registration forms are available at or in Ministries Building Mon-Fri 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Join us for Sun-Up Mass, Sunday, January 17 at 2:00 at St. Joseph's Parish in Palm Bay. Father Bob will be presiding. We will have pizza following Mass, please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Sun-Up reaches out to persons with disabilities and their families and to integrate them into the full life of the Church in their own parishes. Any questions please call Sister Fran Sampson at (321) Sound Familiar??? In the early days of the Church, meeting to celebrate the Mass was often difficult and life-threatening. One of the early theologians and apologists of the Church, Justin Martyr, wrote this around AD 150 between the persecutions of Trajan (98-117) and Marcus Aurelius ( ). The manuscript quoted here was rediscovered in the 16 th century. On the day called Sunday there is a meeting in one place of those who live in cities or the country, and the memoirs of the apostles or the writing of the prophets are read as long as time permits. When the reader has finished, the president in a discourse urges and invites us to the imitation of those noble things. Then we all stand up together and offer prayers. And, as said before, when we have finished the prayer, bread is brought and wine and water, and the president similarly sends up prayers and thanksgiving to the best of his ability, and the congregation assents, saying the Amen; the distribution, and reception of the consecrated elements by each one, take place and they are sent to the absent by the deacons. Those who prosper, and who so wish, contribute, each one as much as he chooses to. What is collected is deposited with the president, and he takes care of orphans and widows, and those who are in want on account of sickness or any other cause, and those who are in bonds, and the strangers who are sojourners among us, and briefly, he is the protector of all those in need. (p248. Catholic Source Book. Ed. Rev Peter Klein Brown-ROA, Dubuque, Iowa) St Justin describes a Liturgy of the Word, a homily, and prayers of the faithful; a Liturgy of the Eucharist: the presentation of gifts, the consecration, the Great Amen, communion under both species, and, of course, a collection for the needy. He mentions a president; we use presider. I understand that at that time, the president was actually the bishop. Parishes as we know them did not exist then, but diocese did! Our Mass has gone through several changes over time - the mass changes because we change. The Second Vatican Council ( ) brought the most striking changes. The first document signed by the Council was Sacrosanctum Concilium the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy. CSL pulled the altar away from the wall and turned the priest around to face the people; authorized the common language; added three additional Eucharistic Prayers; issued the first General Instruction to the Mass; reinstated the Prayers of the Faithful; added the Gospels of Mark and Luke to the lectionary; sectioned the gospel readings into three one-year cycles with each cycle emphasizing one of the three synoptic gospels: Matthew (cycle A); Mark (Cycle B), and Luke (Cycle C). The Gospel of John s is used throughout each year during specific seasons. CSL also allowed three readings at Sunday Mass; issued a new Roman Missal the first in 400 years (and in 2012 we began using another new Roman Missal); approved the Saturday evening vigil Mass; and authorized receiving communion under both species and in the hand. The one and most important - element that does not change is Jesus present in the consecrated bread and wine. That will never change. Whether the common language is English, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Navajo, French or Choctaw, the mass is the same we gather in thanksgiving (Eucharist) to celebrate the mystery of Christ s death and resurrection and his gift of himself to us today. How cool is that? Blessings always. Deacon Rick

11 Pope Francis New Year s Resolutions List (Which Fr. Karl shared with us in his homily, this past weekend.) 1. DON'T GOSSIP. When we gossip, we are doing what Judas did, and begin to tear the other person to pieces. Every time we judge our brother in our hearts or worse when we speak badly of them with others, we are murdering Christians, Francis says. There is no such thing as innocent slander. 2. FINISH YOUR MEAL. Throwing food away is like stealing from the tables of the poor, the hungry! I... encourage everyone to reflect on the problem of thrown away and wasted food to identify ways and means that, by seriously addressing this issue, are a vehicle of solidarity and sharing with the needy. 3. MAKE TIME FOR OTHERS. If the Pope can find time to be kind to others, if he can pause to say thank you, if he can take a moment make someone feel appreciated, then so can I. So can we. Fr James Martin 4. CHOOSE THE 'MORE HUMBLE' PURCHASE. Certainly, possessions, money, and power can give a momentary thrill, the illusion of being happy, but they end up possessing us and making us always want to have more, never satisfied. Put on Christ in your life, place your trust in him, and you will never be disappointed! 5. MEET THE POOR 'IN THE FLESH'. Hospitality in itself isn't enough. It's not enough to give a sandwich if it isn't accompanied by the possibility of learning to stand on one s own feet. Charity that does not change the situation of the poor isn't enough. 6. STOP JUDGING OTHERS. If someone is gay and seeks the Lord with good will, who am I to judge? Let us not forget that hatred, envy, and pride defile our lives! 7. BEFRIEND THOSE WHO DISAGREE. When leaders in various fields ask me for advice, my response is always the same: dialogue, dialogue, dialogue. It is the only way for individuals, families, and societies to grow, the only way for the life of peoples to progress, along with the culture of encounter, a culture in which all have something good to give and all can receive something good in return. Others always have something to give me, if we know how to approach them in a spirit of openness and without prejudice. 8. MAKE COMMITMENTS, SUCH AS MARRIAGE. I ask you, instead, to be revolutionaries, to swim against the tide; yes, I am asking you to rebel against this culture that sees everything as temporary and that ultimately believes that you are incapable of responsibility, that you are incapable of true love. I have confidence in you and I pray for you. Have the courage to swim against the tide. Have the courage to be happy, 9. MAKE IT A HABIT TO 'ASK THE LORD'. Dear young people, he says, some of you may not yet know what you will do with your lives. Ask the Lord, and he will show you the way. The young Samuel kept hearing the voice of the Lord who was calling him, but he did not understand or know what to say, yet with the help of the priest Eli, in the end he answered: 'Speak, Lord, for I am listening' (cf. 1 Sam 3:1-10). You too can ask the Lord: What do you want me to do? What path am I to follow? 10. BE HAPPY. Joy cannot be held at heel: it must be let go. Joy is a pilgrim virtue. It is a gift that walks, walks on the path of life, that walks with Jesus: preaching, proclaiming Jesus, proclaiming joy, lengthens and widens that path.
