2 This past month was one of those months when I couldn t wait for newsletter time. Each month Trish Rice, our church administrative assistant, will remind me, Allen, I need your newsletter article. But this past month I couldn t wait to write. Why the added enthusiasm? You need the inside story about a study our Sunday morning Bible class has started on grace. In one of the opening discussion questions, one of the questions asks, God gives you grace everyday. Think of something that happened today that was evidence of God s grace in your life. Did you thank Him for it? Did you realize it was God at the time? Well, in our class the story I used was about an old chain saw that I was not keeping maintained the way I know you should. It was put away without being cleaned properly. There was oil leaking all over the place. The old gas was left in it for over a year. Everything I know NOT to do with a small engine like this was exactly what I had been doing. Now in our class we said that GRACE is getting something we DON T deserve (forgiveness of sins), while MERCY is NOT getting what we DO deserve (Romans tells us that the consequences of our sin is death). So with my chainsaw, what I DE- SERVED was a chainsaw that wouldn t run. I primed the fuel bulb, pulled the choke, and the chainsaw started first pull. Grace and Mercy in a simple example of my old chainsaw. The follow up question in our study was, How can you raise awareness of God in your daily life? Our answer was to look for it more. I ll admit that seeing God in little things like a chainsaw doesn t come as naturally to me as I would like. But I ll also admit that when I make a point to acknowledge God in the little things, I see Him more often in the bigger things. Fast forward from that Sunday school lesson to Faith Promise Sunday. I said something similar after our pledge Sunday in January when this church pledged over $38,000 to our Family Life Minister. We raised over $20,000 of that on ONE Sunday. You ll remember my February newsletter article, Are you serious! Well God is a showoff, and He wasn t done yet. Faith Promise in March blew me away! God said, you think that was something, watch this And the faithfulness of the body of Christ here pledged over $50,000 to local and world missions. I can t say enough what an encouragement it is to ME, when YOUR faithfulness, coupled with GOD working in our midst, shows up the way it has over the past few months. You guys are GREAT! This is just one more REAL way that allows us to say with confidence things are looking up. Now comes that hard part. Our faith will only grow when we allow God to take our PLEDGE and follow through with it. We can continue to give to our missionaries and their ministries, and we can continue to await the right person God has in mind to lead our youth, children, and families. Thanks for the encouragement. Keep up your faithfulness. Acknowledge when God shows up and God shows off. You never know what God can do with an unmaintained chainsaw. In His Service, Allen G. 3 Communication From the Leadership Elder Notes - Don t Judge a Book By Its Cover In 1852, there was a boy named Antoni born to an unknown family of industrial boilermakers in Southern France. In 1926, the same man, looking like an absent-minded beggar, was struck by a slow moving train as he stood gazing at a church that was under construction, and he laid on the streets unconscious for hours before a policeman, realizing he was still breathing, took him to the public hospital where he died three days later. If this were the dust jacket to Antoni s life storybook, you probably wouldn t even glance at it twice. As I have gotten more involved in this church over the last year, I have grown to appreciate the life stories that you all have shared. The quiet man in the sound booth who gave over twenty years to the Navy. The piano player, that we take for granted, who has shaped the lives of children for years. The balding man who sets up front and sings off tune that has used his eternal optimism to bring joy to the lowliest of humanity his whole life. The tall, portly gentleman who can tell you stories for hours of answered prayers and miracles. The lady that turned personal tragedy into a reason to love and pray for others. The man who lost his parents at a young age and didn t rebel against the call to the ministry. Their book covers may too be bland. Their stories, inside, are rich. So, why did thousands of people attend the funeral of the beggar-looking guy killed by a train in 1926? And why is he still remembered today? Turns out he was an architect. So what! He also had an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Sorry, but so does one percent of our population! He was an artist. Ok-but still not that impressive. Turns out that he was dedicated to Jesus Christ. So what-i m a Christian too! But he used his disorder to master architectural artistry to visualize a church, in his head, that workers would still be building ninety years after his death, only for the glory of God. And people pay to visit this church today, even though it is unfinished, to revel in its attention to detail and how it is being built to praise the God he loved. So, are we doing the same thing as Antoni, the architect? Don t we all have certain abilities and a few flaws? Is our dedication to Jesus Christ allowing those abilities to shine or do we have excuses like I m too old, too fat, too pretty, too young, or too busy to bring glory to God. The inside pages of our life is what God wants to write on. Our outside jackets are already made, but it s the life-story that should reflect God s love. Did you forget that He sent His only son to die for us? I hope not! Let s show our devotion to him and our love for others. Let s build a masterpiece for him! *You want to see Antoni s masterpiece? You can look it up, but you won t understand it until you see it. You want to see the CCCC masterpiece? You can look it up, but you won t understand it until you experience it. To experience it, you must do your part. Let s make a story between these dust covers. Let s make it rich. Let s make it deep. Let s make it beautiful. Remember, sometimes we just start the story and others finish it long after we are gone. Let s write it with love! In His Service, Wes Scoles *The architect s name is Antoni Gaudi` and he visualized the church La Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain. It is planned to be completed 100 years after his death.
