The Rectory, Dunheved Road, Launceston Dear friends, At a recent deanery quiet day, which included a presentation on where the deanery currently is and a presentation highlighting the need for consultation of how we provide and cover the cost of ministry to the deanery, Archdeacon Audrey Elkington put forward a proposal for consideration by all parishes and benefices in Trigg Major deanery. The proposal was summarized as follows: DEANERY OF TRIGG MAJOR - DEANERY PLAN PROPOSAL FOR CONSIDERATION For the last, few years Trigg Major Synod have been considering various ways of providing ministry to the people of Launceston and surrounding rural villages. We have considered a Minster model, shared ministries and other forms of using our stipendiary clergy and lay members to grow the church in a sustainable way. Synod believes that there is now an opportunity to develop a deanery plan. We wish to publish the draft plan in October The first stages in developing the plan are underway with a period of research, a quiet day of prayer and discussion and this consultation. We wish to stress that this consultation is not about closing churches, but to ensure the deanery has a sustainable future by meeting its costs and sharing our resources across the whole population in a fair way. The purpose of this leaflet is to provide some information for parochial church councils and individuals to consider regarding our future. The synod officers would welcome your comments, particularly from parochial church councils, but also from individuals. There are two aspects of our ministry that we need to think about:- How many stipendiary clergy can we afford? What is the fairest way of using the particular skills of stipendiary clergy in the Launceston Area. 3

THE PROPOSAL This proposal for the reorganisation of benefices was considered by the standing committee as the best of four options. These in turn were based on either sharing responsibility for Launceston or creating two very large rural benefices. The proposal is to create three rural groups where each stipendiary priest would have a special responsibility. The team of ministers would then share responsibility for the central benefice of Launceston in some form of Team Ministry. The team ministry would provide opportunities for training, developing resources and assist with the administration of smaller parishes across the whole deanery. There would be a greater role for lay ministry. It is assumed that the deanery can meet the costs of three stipendiary clergy given the average level of subsidy in Cornwall. In today s prices that is approximately 150,000 per year. We currently raise about 90% of this. It is recognised that with only three clergy there will be a change in the role of the parish priest; leaning towards teaching, leadership and supervision. In the current provision of clergy to the deanery, there are 4.5 stipendiary posts; however, they are not evenly distributed. Benefice Population Churches Area Altarnon (1/2) 1891 (9.5%) Boyton 1901 (9.5%) North Petherwin 1709 (8.6%) Three Rivers 4042 (20.3%) Launceston 10,383 (52.1%)

CONSULTATION WITH PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCILS We would like our parochial church councils to consider some questions but responses are not limited to these. 1. Do you believe that the proposed plan for three stipendiary clergy in the deanery is financially sustainable in the long term? 5

2. If you consider this number of clergy impractical from a ministerial point of view, how could we as a deanery raise the finances for a greater number? 3. Do you agree that there is a need for change in how our clergy workloads are distributed across the deanery? 4. The proposed plan would require some changes in the role of parish clergy, and an increased involvement for lay people in the worship and ministry of our churches would you accept these changes? 5. Do you have a view about where the three-stipendiary clergy should live, if we opt for this plan? 6. Are there other factors which the deanery should consider in a plan for our future? 7. Would you like to make an alternative proposal for the life and ministry of our churches in the future? You will notice that the proposal is deliberately vague around how the three stipendiary ministers share collaborative responsibility for the parish of Launceston in some form of Team Ministry. Hopefully this will prompt involvement and discussion about how we can take such a proposal forward. I do think that it will have an effect on the existing Launceston Parish and invite you all to feedback any comments, concerns, proposals or ideas that you come up with. This document is currently being discussed at DCC and PCC level and I hope to give everyone an opportunity, in a July meeting, or in response to this article, to contribute to the feedback we will send to the deanery standing committee by the end of August, to meet their deadline. This affects our churches, working together as Launceston Parish and all in Trigg Major Deanery, so please ask any questions and let us know what you think. (Please see future pew-sheets for final details of the meeting once the arrangements have been finalised.) Many thanks, God bless, Revd Jane <>< 6

At Messy Church this month, twenty youngsters and their families looked at Christ s Ascension and at the day of Pentecost and the coming of the Holy Spirit. We enjoyed various crafts on these themes (see Revd Teresa s effort to the right :0). Following 35 minutes of craft we came together to worship, then following the Messy grace we sat and enjoyed fellowship over a super tea and ice cream. Messy Church now takes place from 3.30pm to 4.45pm on the third Tuesday of every month (except August) at St Stephen s Hall, in Roydon Road, Launceston. Please come and see. Food 4 Thought Coffee, chat, food, theme for the day, craft, quiet-space, music Please feel free to join us everyone welcome Date: Where: Time: ~ Saturday 17 th June ~ St Marys Church & Choir Vestry ~ Anytime from 10am til 12 noon Also now including our Kid s Café on the same day: 10.30am to 11.30am where youngsters can feast on the word of God, explore, build, grow and enjoy their journey with Jesus all welcome. 7

How did our first Kid s Café go? You may well ask. We were delighted to welcome five young people and their families to our first Kid s Café on the third Saturday in May. We began at 10.30am and enjoyed cereal for breakfast while we chatted about communicating with each other, which led us on to talking to God and how we converse with him through prayer. Our next course was coloured toast, when the children painted a picture of who they would pray for (using milk and food colouring). The bread was then toasted and we thought about our prayers as we tucked in. Absorbed in the crafts on offer and in deep conversation about the initiative Thy Kingdom Come and the praying for all to come to know Jesus, the time ran away with us and we continued past our planned finishing time. We then came together with the local worship leaders and visitors to our Food 4 Thought Café in a final prayer, where we shared all that we had done and who we had prayed for. Then placing our prayers in the center of a large coloured parachute, together we threw them upwards to God (we did have to do this a few times to ensure that God had successfully caught all of our prayers). We are looking forward to our next Kid s Café on Saturday 17 th June in St Mary Magdalene Church at 10.30am. Children and families welcome, please pop in to see us and enjoy feasting on the word of God. 8

St Mary Magdalene Choir Sing Choral Evensong at Exeter Cathedral On Saturday 22 nd April the St Mary's choir visited Exeter Cathedral to sing Choral Evensong. The choir has sung there before but many, many years ago under the direction of Jonathan Mann. Exeter Cathedral is a very different place to sing to Truro. The choir stalls are further apart and so it tests the choirs listening and watching skills! We sang music by Aston and Sanders along with a beautiful arrangement of Now the green blade riseth by Simon Lindley. Our accompanist was Frances Hamel, who as always did a fantastic job. The choir enjoy these singing days out and we are always on the lookout for new places to sing. 17

An excerpt from Gloria's Faith Journey, given at our PCC meeting My journey with our Lord, is very simple. I was taken, with my brothers, to church each Sunday, as part of a loving family. It was a regular, happy occasion, to which I looked forward. I had absolutely no one 'pushing' me towards any religion, it was just something we did! My grandad would say, 'There it is, my lovely, written down in black and white! The words of The Bible, you live by what it tells you and you won't go far wrong!' I must have been about six years old when I first met my Jesus. I knew He was mine because, no matter where I sat, He was always watching me! I would cover my face and peep through my fingers, and, yes, He was still watching me. 'MY JESUS' was hanging on the wall of the vestry, in Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh. He wore a long white dress, had long dark hair, and one of his fingers was broken off. I loved Him with a passion that has never left me, Sometimes I would leave Him an aniseed ball, wedged between His chipped toes and His sandals. Above his head flew a bird, a long white ribbon held in its beak which said 'suffer little children to come unto me', and I did! During these early, childhood, years, I, along with my friends, joined in all the usual childhood organisations. One I remember, most vividly, was the 'PATHFINDERS'. I am not sure whether this had a church or chapel background, but it was certainly Christian. I remember it always being held in the chapel hall because neither 'Holy Trinity' nor 'St. Lukes' had a hall. Every now and then, missionaries would visit and tell us about a Jesus who was alive in far off countries such as Africa. They brought with them lantern slides - remember those?? and we saw black children, and the places they lived in, it was all wonderful and very exciting. Over the years, my Jesus and I have had several ups and downs, our 'falling out', never lasted long, I would say I was sorry and He would say sorry too. I really can't pin-point the exact time when 'my Jesus' became our Lord Jesus Christ, it just happened. Now, whenever we meet up, I bow my head or dip my knee before Him, because He is so very special and deserves to be honoured in this way. Well now, that was all a very long time ago, and yet, I feel exactly the same way about Him now as I did then. Of course, now I understand that our Lord's love, is for everyone who accepts Him into their lives, and not only for 'yours truly'! Sadly, the church, where I was baptized, confirmed at age eleven, and married, and where most of my family are buried, was destroyed by arsonists a few years ago. They destroyed a lovely old church, but they cannot destroy memories. I am told that today s children can't be expected to understand the archaic words of the old King James Bible, and shouldn't be expected to sit quietly for all of one hour. If we want them to come to church at all, we must make the services exciting and entertaining. Well! all I can say to that is, I must have been a child genius. The cold, often damp, flickering, gas-lit Church, long sermons, the vicar always in clerical robes, Mr. Penny thumping away on the organ, I loved it all! I learnt all about Matthew, Mark, 18

Luke and John, and listened, in rapture, to the parables, and, as for the archaic words, to me, sheer poetry. Most of my friends, with their families, would be there too. The church would be almost full. If words were spoken that I didn t understand, I was told by grandad 'we would look it up' when we got home. Most children will understand if given the opportunity to learn. My brothers and I would attend Sunday school 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. and during the summer months we were expected to attend evensong. After Evensong, we would walk the lanes and by-ways of Buckfast and Buckfastleigh, meeting with other families along the way, before returning home for a big, cold Sunday supper. All of my life as child, teenager, and young adult was centred around the church, as were the lives of most of my friends. Really, on reflection, there wasn't much else to do, but we were very happy. When I grew up, married, and had children of my own, they too had the same Priest, and his family, in their circle of friends. I well remember a neighbour bringing into our home, photographs of her daughter s wedding, when she asked my youngest son, Jason, who that was, pointing to the Priest in the front row of the family group, he replied, that s Jesus!. It never occurred to me that Jason thought of Mr Timms in that way, what an honour for such a dear man. Personally, a quiet, restful church, lovely hymns, prayers thanking our dear Lord and Saviour for the many blessings He gives to us, is my idea of Heaven. When I close my eyes and see that dear face looking down on me.. that is all I need or could ever ask for. But that isn't to say that I don't enjoy other forms of worship when the occasion arises. The recent service celebrating the ' Week of Prayer for Christian Unity', I, personally, found to be most uplifting and heart-warming. The presence of so many people, all of different denominations, gathered together praising our Lord, is what true Christianity is all about, or should be, according to my upbringing! How very fortunate we are, that we can worship God freely, without reprisal, when so many in the world cannot. Two of my favourite bible verses, that I say over and over to myself, are Philippians 1v 6, He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion, until the day of Jesus Christ'; and John 15 v 16 'You did not choose Me but I chose you...' Well now, if God has chosen me then He is going to make sure that we will stand together until the end. As long as I remain faithful and want Him to be at work in my life, He will be forever at my side. I will, always, make mistakes, I will, always, disappoint Him, I will, always, sin, but my place in His heart is guaranteed, after all, JESUS DIED FOR ME! I wasn t far wrong all those years ago, when I thought JESUS WAS MINE; HE WAS, HE IS, HE ALWAYS WILL BE! When finally, we meet up I will know Him immediately; because He will look exactly like He did, hanging on the wall, in Holy Trinity vestry! AMEN 2017 Gloria Laseby. 19

CHURCHWARDENS LICENSED FOR THE COMING YEAR IN LAUNCESTON L-R Brenda Mitchell (St Mary Magdalene Church), Pam Parnell and Susan Barriball (both from St Thomas Church), Heather Letts (St Mary Magdalene Church), Revd Jane Everitt, Terry Duke and James Wonnacott (both from St Stephen s Church). St Mary Magdalene s Church in Launceston, saw two deaneries join together on Tuesday 9 May as their Churchwardens were licensed for the coming year as part of the Archdeacons visitations. Church wardens, clergy and friends from the deaneries of Trigg Major and Stratton took part in the service which was led by Revd Jane Everitt and Archdeacon Audrey Elkington. Well over 40 churchwardens pledged to care for their churches, their parishes and their clergy for the coming year. During the service, Archdeacon Audrey spoke about inclusion and safeguarding as an important aspect of the welcome to all-comers and as a way of reflecting God s love. She also spoke with particular reference to the Welcome Notice used in Coventry Cathedral. The worship was enhanced by the presence of the robed choir who sang an Easter anthem. Refreshments and fellowship were enjoyed by all after the service. Thank you to all who came. 20
