First Lesson 2 Corinthians 7: Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while 9 yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you, it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. 13 By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted to him about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well. 15 And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling. 6
Psalm of the Day Psalm 51b O Lord, open my lips,* and my mouth will declare your praise. You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;* you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;* a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Refrain Create in me a pure heart, O God,* and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence* or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation,* and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Then I will teach transgressors your ways,* and sinners will turn back to you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 7
Gospel Mark 6:30-44 (please stand) 30 The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest. 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. 33 But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. 34 When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things. 35 By this time it was late in the day, so his disciples came to him. This is a remote place, they said, and it s already very late. 36 Send the people away so that they can go to the surrounding countryside and villages and buy themselves something to eat. 37 But he answered, You give them something to eat. They said to him, That would take more than half a year s wages! Are we to go and spend that much on bread and give it to them to eat? 38 How many loaves do you have? he asked. Go and see. When they found out, they said, Five and two fish. 39 Then Jesus directed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass. 40 So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties. 41 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to his disciples to distribute to the people. He also divided the two fish among them all. 42 They all ate and were satisfied, 43 and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish. 44 The number of the men who had eaten was five thousand. P: Come, Holy Spirit! Fill the hearts of your faithful people, and kindle in us the fire of your love. Alleluia! After the children's lesson, a staffed nursery is available. Meet the nursery workers in back, and they will take the kids to the playroom. You can pick them up at any time. 8
Song of the Day Son of God, Eternal Savior (CWS #492) Son of God, eternal Savior, Source of life and truth and grace, Word made flesh, whose birth among us, Honors all our human race, You our head, who, throned in glory, For your own will ever plead: Fill us with your love and pity; Heal our wrongs and help our need. Come, O Christ, and reign among us, King of love and Prince of Peace; Hush the storm of strife and passion; Bid its cruel discords cease. By your patient years of toiling, By your silent hours of pain, Quench our fevered thirst for pleasure; Stem our selfish greed for gain. Bind us all as one together In your Church s sacred fold, Weak and healthy, poor and wealthy, Sad and joyful, young and old. Is there want or pain or sorrow? Make us all the burden share. Are there spirits crushed and broken? Teach us, Lord, to soothe their care. As you, Lord, have lived for others, So may we for others live. Freely have your gifts been granted; Freely may your servants give. Yours the gold and yours the silver, Yours the wealth of land and sea; We but stewards of your bounty Held in solemn trust will be. 9
The Message RETURN for Abundant Blessings 2 Kings 4:1-7 4 The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the L. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves. 2 Elisha replied to her, How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house? Your servant has nothing there at all, she said, except a small jar of olive oil. 3 Elisha said, Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don t ask for just a few. 4 Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side. 5 She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 6 When all the jars were full, she said to her son, Bring me another one. But he replied, There is not a jar left. Then the oil stopped flowing. 7 She went and told the man of God, and he said, Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left. Notes 10

We Confess Our Faith in God Te Deum We praise you, O God, we acclaim you as Lord; all creation worships you, Father everlasting. To you all angels, all the pow rs of heav n, cherubim and seraphim, sing in endless praise: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of heav nly hosts, heaven and earth are full of your glory. The glorious company of apostles praise you. The noble fellowship of prophets praise you. The white robed army of martyrs praise you. Throughout the world the holy Church acclaims you: Father of majesty unbounded, your glorious, true, and only Son, and the Holy Spirit, advocate and guide. You, Christ, are the King of glory, the eternal Son of the Father. When you became man to set us free, you humbled yourself to be born of a virgin. You overcame the sting of death and opened the kingdom of heaven to all believers. You sit at the right hand of God in the glory of the Father. We believe that you will come to be our judge. Come then, Lord, and help your people, bought with the price of your own blood, and bring us with your saints to glory everlasting. 12

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. 13
Prayer for Grace and Blessing P: O Lord, almighty and everlasting God, you have brought us safely to this new day.
