1 UNITED METHODIST HOUSE NEWS Box 115 Chautauqua, New York May 2017 The United Methodist House in Chautauqua is open year round for retreats, Rest and renewal and family gatherings. For information and reservations, Please call Almost like being there. I did not physically get to Chautauqua this winter, but I did check the progress of the Amphitheater building project via the amp cams on the Institution s website. I heard of members of our Board who checked those cameras daily from wherever they happened to be this winter. I particularly enjoyed the camera angles which showed the UM House in the background. I ve been there, I know that place, I can t wait to go back and see how things look live and in person! This winter our oldest son and his wife adopted a 2 year old little boy from China. They were in China for over two weeks and we eagerly anticipated the daily videos and pictures from them as we waited at home. The photos and video chats were priceless and almost like being there. But being at the Buffalo airport upon their return was better than any pictures. We now know firsthand the grin of our newest grandson and his love of balloons, airplanes and fish. The wait and anticipation made the meeting of Landon so sweet and so live! The UM House is gearing up for another summer season. This newsletter will share much of what you may want to know about our summer schedule. During the 2017 season you can follow the House activities online at umhouse.blogspot.com thanks to hosts Bob and Karen Douds. It will be almost like being there. But even better will be if you can come in person from June 24- August 27 we will be LIVE! Brenda Baird, President On April 4, 2017, the new president of Chautauqua Institution, Michael Hill, was interviewed by the Buffalo, New York PBS television station, WNED. This interview was taped before a live (but silent) audience of which my husband and I were part. It was equally fascinating to see how the interview was produced as well as to hear the lively views of the new president. Following the taping, the audience had a chance to ask questions of Mr. Hill. A reception capped off the event which gave me an opportunity to invite the new president to visit the UM House anytime. Thanks to Larry Baird for capturing the moment. Brenda Baird and Michael Hill
2 The United Methodist House News Page 2 Greetings from our United Methodist House Host Couple nited Methodist Ho se Cha ta q a What is missing???? It is YOU (U), of course!!! While we love the beautiful home dating from 1888, enjoy the Institution s programs, appreciate the spirit that is Chautauqua what keeps us returning for amazing summers is YOU! We so value the friendships we have made and the opportunity to know more guests and visitors to the porch each summer. Whether you will stay with us for a week or visit for a few minutes, know we welcome you. Remember, even if you aren t staying with us, we have some terrific programs during the week and YOU are invited to attend. Begin your week by worshipping with us in our chapel at 9am on Sunday. On Tuesday, our Chaplain s Chat is at noon and Thursday evening join us for cappuccino or iced coffee and discuss a topic chosen by our chaplain of the week. Bob and Karen Douds, Host Couple Property Committee News Looking forward to seeing YOU on the porch! Spring is here, everything is turning green and the mud is starting to dry out. We look forward to getting everything ready for the new season. Personally, I enjoy getting out the furniture and doing other preparations in spring and summer more than putting things away in the fall. The boiler that heats the floor in the chapel was replaced this winter as scheduled. We are in the process of getting new packing for the hydraulic cylinder for the elevator, which should be completed by the end of April. The brick road in front of the house has taken a beating as well as the southeast corner of the lawn, due to heavy construction equipment used in the Amphitheater rebuilding. Amp construction seems to be coming along well. You can follow the progress through photos and two live-stream web cameras at ciweb.org/amp. The picture of the Amp was taken from the porch balcony on April 13. Come join us during our two work weekends scheduled for June 9 th &10 th and 16 th & 17 th. The house is available for workers to stay. Those who stay will need to provide for their meals. Participants usually go out for dinner Saturday evening. All are welcome to join us. Contact Debbie at Hurlbut Church for room reservations. For those who want to get an early start, I will be there both Friday afternoons. We will start work around 9 am Saturday. Come have fun and good fellowship as we work together to get the house ready for the season. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions at pamconradhow@yahoo.com or Conrad Howard, Property Chair
3 The United Methodist House News Page 3 Spring Greetings from the Finance Committee! Many of us have been keeping tabs on the new Amp construction via the Institution s Amp Cam. Living near Chautauqua year-round and attending Hurlbut Memorial UMC, I ve also been able to check it out in person on Sundays as I head for home after morning services at Hurlbut UMC. It will be interesting to see how our visual sight lines and ability to hear the programming will be affected in the coming 2017 Season! As usual, we have had a number of planned building projects (new foundation and new gas boiler) as well as an unexpected expense (major elevator repair), which have diminished our funds. The Board truly appreciates the generous support you provide through gifts and bequests, which are critical to our United Methodist House. On behalf of the Finance Committee and the Board of Directors, I would ask you to prayerfully consider a financial gift this year.
