1 Alpha Beta Chapter Delta Kappa Gamma International Society I S S U E DATES TO REMEMBER Apr. 29 May ETA State Convention Rocky Mount, NC July Southeast Regional Conference Louisville, KY July International Convention, New York, New York 1 S E L M A, N C S E P T E M B E R A Message from President Jennifer Swartz I am glad that it's finally time to invite you all back together for our first meeting of the new biennium! While the overall theme for Delta Kappa Gamma through 2011 is Vision into Action, the focus of Delta Kappa Gamma's mission project continues with Going Green 24/7. I feel that it is a very appropriate mission since I am a very green member of the Alpha Beta Chapter. First Vice President Lorine Davis and I traveled to Goldsboro early this sum- mer to participate in the new leadership training conducted by ETA State President Betty Marshall and her executive board. She and I have worked closely with our own Alpha Beta Executive Committee and are looking for ways to improve our participation at meetings and to make our programs those that will help draw us to- Alpha Beta Chapter Scholarship ALPHA BETA CHAPTER Jennifer Swartz, President Lorine Davis, 1st Vice President Karen Creech, 2nd Vice President Debra Avery Recording / Corresponding Becky Kuszmaul Treasurer Mallary Barnes, daughter of Mark and Vera Barnes of Smithfield, NC, was chosen to receive the Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship from among eleven applicants throughout Johnston County. and Vice President for the YMCA Youth and Government This fall she is attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and plans to major in elementary education. In her application she states, "I enjoy learning and I would like to share my passion for Mallary, a 2010 graduate from knowledge with my stusmithfield-selma High School, dents. In addition, I have was the valedictorian of her had amazing teachers who class. Not only was she outhave inspired me to perform standing in academics, she was to my full potential. 2 PAGE 2 Message from President cont. To this end, Lorine has coordinated a full year's worth of activities for us to enjoy! We are going to kick off the year with our first meeting at the Hinnant Family Winery on Tuesday, October 5. We will have the opportunity to participate in a wine-tasting starting at 5:30 for a $5.00 fee before the evening's meal and meeting. Participation in this pre-activity is completely voluntary, but we are hoping that you have been planning to check out the winery for some time and haven't had a good enough reason to follow through on that desire. Donald Bailey already has us on his calendar and will be delighting us again this year with many tasty dishes. I believe the only thing that could make me look forward to Donald's dishes more would be if he included the recipes so I could impress my family! A large portion of the Executive Committee's work during our summer meetings focused on trying to build mentoring into the leadership of the different committees that we use to support the work of our organization. As a green president, I am learning a great deal about our chapter and our organization. I have been reaching out to many of you and calling on your mentoring skills and knowledge base to help guide me through this biennium so that I can serve you well in this role. A personal project that I have been developing is the construction of committee handbooks. Calling members to ask them to serve as committee leaders I have found that I am not the only person who is unclear of the expectations of the committees we have in place. I must thank you for saying "yes" to these leadership roles even when we were both unsure of the duties that would befall you. Over the course of this biennium it is my goal to construct a handbook for each committee to guide Society members in their work together for the benefit of our organization and in our efforts to publish the good works that we do as a Society. Several of our committees remain without leadership. We are all busy women with families and outside interests. Our ability to perform at high levels of success in our many activities is one of the key traits that I see in all Alpha Beta members. I hope that you will look at the list of committees we have included in the newsletter and realize that if we all do a little work together that we can accomplish a great deal as a Society. At the state business meeting this weekend, Betty Marshall called on us to think of ways we can publicize our participation in an organization that calls us together through our attention to excellence. As we move toward our first meeting of the new year, please consider ways you can use your talents and gifts for the benefit of our Society. Say Cheese! At our October meeting the Communications Committee will be taking our pictures for the update to our red book and biography. This group has worked for the past several months to revise the red book to include photographs. They are also updating the biography so pull out your resume so you can help us account for your most recent accomplishments. We will have a hard copy of these documents at the October meeting so that you can help us catch errors we may have overlooked. Visit our Chapter Web site at:
