I came to HHUMC as our youth and children s director in 1982, met Julie here and we were married in the Sanctuary in Then it was off to seminary in Now, 21 years later, we were appointed to lead the very congregation where it all started for us. We have planned a homecoming Sunday for May 5th, I know this is very short notice but it began with us having a reunion of our youth group on May 3rd. When we discovered that Mark Conforti (a United Methodist pastor from the North Carolina Conference) was making the trip, I invited him to preach for us that Sunday and he accepted and is excited to bring the morning message! Therefore, we expanded this to the entire church, together with a picnic (see instructions about this inside the newsletter). Julie and I feel very honored and privileged to serve at HHUMC and to come back to our roots. This is going to be a great day. Let s all plan on being a part of what God is doing as we Encourage one another on to love and good deeds. Hebrews 10:24 In Christ, Larry

Kaebnick Korner The following letters are from various scholarship recipients of HHUMC. In addition, May 31st is the deadline for applications to be received in the church office. Check the church website for more details. Hi HHUMC Members, I am currently in my first semester of graduate school at The University of Alabama. I am in the Counselor Education program specializing in School Counseling. This semester worked out where all my classes are online. I am excited for next semester to have classes on campus where I can meet more students in my field. However, we do have live discussions through our weekly chats online. I am learning the necessary skills to become a guidance counselor. One of my favorite classes I am taking right now is a career counseling class. My days are very busy working as a Business Consultant for SpotOn where I meet local business owners daily. Then at night I come home to do my course work. My goal after graduate school is to become a guidance counselor in a middle school or high school. I cannot wait to start working with children and making a difference in their lives. I appreciate the Kaebnick Scholarship for giving me this opportunity to further my studies and the love and support I get from my church family. Thank you, Ashley Petryzak Hey Church Family, Here is a little update on my crazy college life! I am currently two and a half months away from getting my Associates Degree at Broward College and will be graduating on the Deans list with honors! I am so excited to complete this chapter in my life and move on to the next, which will include an even crazier schedule and an increase in coffee consumption for I have been accepted into the Biology program at Nova Southeastern University. My dream of becoming a dentist is slowly on its way! I have set up plans to intern at my dental office this summer, and I cannot wait for the amount of experience and knowledge I will get from actually being hands on in the business. When I am not on the college campus you can find me either of two places, work or the softball field. I have been employed by Bass Pro Shops for a year and a half now, and I absolutely love it. As for softball, I can never let it go. I fulfilled my two seasons for Broward College and I now play every Sunday on an adult fast pitch league. I am still contemplating whether or not I want to play ball for Nova. Lastly, thank you so much church family for your prayers and support. Though college may be stressful I know that with God all things are possible. (Matthew 19:26) Much Love, Heather Vlam Over the past four years of my college career I have been very blessed to stay connected with the people who matter most in my life. Both my biological family and church family have been extremely supportive in the different endeavors I have pursued. I truly believe that the support from the people you love helps an individual succeed in anything they want to accomplish. I just recently accepted a four-year management development program with Pernod Ricard in Orlando and look forward to beginning my career. I thank everyone who has supported me with thoughts and prayers and I will continue to stay in touch with my Hollywood Hills United Methodist Family. Tim McCurdy
United Methodist Church Cross and Flame Emblem The history and significance of the Cross and Flame emblem are as rich and diverse as The United Methodist Church. For the emblem a traditional symbol the cross was linked with a single flame with dual tongues of fire. The resulting insignia is rich in meaning. It relates The United Methodist Church to God through Christ (cross) and the Holy Spirit (flame). The flame is a reminder of Pentecost when witnesses were unified by the power of the Holy Spirit and saw "tongues, as of fire" (Acts 2:3). The elements of the emblem also remind us of a transforming moment in the life of Methodism's founder, John Wesley, when he sensed God's presence and felt his heart "strangely warmed." WHAT S COOKING IN GOD S KITCHEN? CARROT CAKE Submitted by Lynn Hudson Cake: Cream Cheese Frosting: 2 cups all-purpose flour One 8 oz. package (1 cup) cream cheese, softened 2 t ground cinnamon 3 t butter, softened 1 1/2 t baking soda One 1 pound box (3 2/3 cups) confectioner s sugar 1 t salt 1 t vanilla extract 1 cup sugar 1 to 2 t milk or orange juice (optional) 1 cup light brown sugar 1 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs, lightly beaten 3 cups grated or finely shredded carrots (6-8 medium carrots) 1 1/4 cups coarsely chopped walnuts Heat oven to 350 degrees and grease and flour two 9 inch round cake pans. In a medium bowl, combine the flour, cinnamon, baking soda and salt. Stir with a fork to mix well. In a large bowl, combine both kinds of sugar with the oil and stir well. Add the beaten eggs in 3 batches, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the flour in 2 batches, mixing only until flour disappears into the batter. Fold in the carrots and the nuts and stir gently just to combine everything. Bake for minutes, until the cakes are golden brown, spring back when touched lightly in the center, and begin to pull away from the sides of the pans. Cool in the pans on wire racks for 15 minutes and then turn the cakes out to cool completely. TO MAKE THE FROSTING, combine the cream cheese and butter in a large bowl and beat the confectioner s sugar and the vanilla and beat to mix everything together into a smooth frosting. If it seems stiff, beat in the milk. TO COMPLETE THE CAKE, place a layer, top side down, on a cake stand or serving platter and cover it with about one third of the cream cheese frosting. Place the second layer on top of the frosted layer, right side up. Frost the sides and then the top of the cake. Refrigerate the cake for 30 minutes or so to help the frosting set. YUMMY ENJOY!!! Do you have a favorite recipe? Please share it with us by faxing, mailing or dropping it off in the church office and look for it in a future edition.
Dear Church Family, I was recently asked to help with the youth program at Hollywood Hills Methodist Church, and have agreed to do so for an indefinite period of time. Children are one of God s greatest gifts, and it is obvious that HHUMC places great importance on them as well. Since you are entrusting me with your kids, I want my church family to know a little bit about me. My wife, Libby and I live in North Miami Beach and have a 34 year old son, Brandon, who is a Youth Director at a Methodist church in Ft. Lauderdale. Libby and I joined HHUMC approximately 4 years ago, and prior to that we were members at Fulford UMC for 20 years. While at Fulford, my wife and I were the volunteer youth leaders for 10 years, and thereafter I became a staff member as the part time Youth Director, we also ran the children s choir. I was President of the United Methodist Men in addition to sitting on various church committees and worked with other ministries within the church. Working with youth, however, was our greatest passion and I am looking forward to doing that once again here at HHUMC. I have already been getting to know some of the our youth and have talked to a few of them to find out what they want from their youth group experience and in what direction they want the program the program to go. What I feel is important is for them to know HHUMC as a safe haven, and to bond them together. I want them to learn God s word and to discuss their faith, and to be involved in worship service. I will encourage them to take ownership of their own program in hopes they develop leadership skills, responsibility and a sense of pride. And, I want to create in them a servant s heart through service projects and mission work. I look forward to getting to know our youth better, as well as their parents, and I invite any of my church family to call me at any time if you wish. Blessings, Jerry Giostra jgiostra@aol.com Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 Our middle and high school students will be participating in the 30 Hour Famine on May 10th & 11th. During this time, they will be fasting to raise money to support World Vision and their fight against world hunger. Please be looking for students carrying forms that need sponsors for this very worthy event. Let s partner with our youth to help alleviate world Hunger! Road Trip On May 26th, our youth will head to First United Methodist Church of Coral Springs to experience worship with their youth group. We will need to meet at church at 8:00 A.M. and will arrive back by noon. This is an opportunity for us to see how other youth groups do ministry as we plan for our future.

Worship Arts There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1) This month, we will be having a special recognition for each Sunday. May 5th This will be our Homecoming Sunday, with Rev. Dr. Mark Conforti preaching. Mark was a youth in our church when Pastor Larry was the youth leader. It will be exciting to see and hear the message that Mark will bring to us. After the 11 o clock service, we will have a Church Picnic. May 12th Mothers Day. We will be honoring the special women in our lives. Please bring a photo, or memento to put on our tables up at the altar. You may drop items off in the office before May 12th. Please mark your pictures and items, so we may return them to you. The children s choir will sing for us. May 19th Pentecost Sunday. We will be confirming the Class of 2013 at the 11 am service. Please plan on supporting the eight young people that are making this big step in their spiritual lives. Wear Red! May 26 Memorial Day Sunday/Graduation Sunday. We will be recognizing all graduates that will be graduating this year. We will also pay tribute to those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. For more information, contact Christie DeMinico, at the church The Staff Parish Relations Committee is actively searching for a ministry director/directors for our children and youth programs. In the interim, Krista Birri, our Preschool Director and Jerry Giostra, a former Youth Director at Fulford UMC and who is also a member of our church will be leading these ministries. Please offer your prayers and assistance to them as our committee diligently seeks to fill these positions in the near future. Thank You Joy McCurdy Staff Parish Co-Chairperson
