Sunday s Gospel is our final selec on from Mark for this liturgical year. It is taken from the end of Jesus teaching in Jerusalem immediately preceding the account of his arrest and passion. In it Jesus gives his disciples hope to sustain them through his passion and death and any persecu on or suffering that they would encounter a er his resurrec on. The words from the book of Daniel also provided hope and encouragement to the people of Daniel s me. The encouragement in these scriptures is meant for us as well, for none of us will escape tribula on in our lives. Followers of Jesus will be able to endure suffering with joyful hope, knowing that Christ s love will lead us along the way of discipleship and give us eternal life with God. Copyright J. S. 5 Young Church Faith Forma on Religious Educa on St. Barnabas Youth by Simeon Willis March for Life, Washington D.C. Please sign up in the social hall as soon as possible as sea ng is limited (we have other churches joining us). March for those who cannot. Bus fair is $60 a person. Please reserve your hotel room unless you are in youth ministry. Mpower Moments (for parents): Sunday, November 18 from 10: am in St. John XXIII: Parents remain the biggest influence on the lives of their children. One of the main ways we can best help them to love being Catholic is to share experiences of faith as a family at home. Where to begin? Start with the Church's seasons! Come join other parents to share ideas of how to live Advent at home in ways your children (and you) will cherish and never forget. Please Return Your Library Books Just a reminder to return your St. Barnabas library books! We currently have many checked out that are overdue. Thank you! Book of Remembrance in November The month of November and the remembrance of All Souls is here. As is our custom here at St. Barnabas, you are invited to write the names of deceased loved ones in our Book of Remembrance, located at the front of the Church near the Bap smal Font. At every Mass in November, as we pray for the dead, we will especially remember those whose names are wri en in our book. Please take the opportunity to add to our Book of Remembrance anyone for whom you would like the parish to pray. Our tradi on holds great respect for bodily remains, since the body was created and redeemed by God, was once the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, and has a des ny of life with God in glory. The funeral prac ces of the early church contrasted greatly with those of the pagans, who had a great dread of the dead body. The ancient Chris an funeral liturgy ended with the rela ves and friends giving a final kiss to the body. It expressed affec on and showed their faith that the grave would not be the last word. This kiss horrified pagans, who thought that any contact with the dead was degrading. Every year on their loved one s birthday to life, the Chris ans would return to the place of their burial to mark their profound communion with those whose lives were hidden in Christ. Typically, they buried the dead with their faces turned toward the east, symbolizing the rising of the Sun of Jus ce, Christ, at the end of days. They were a racted to the catacombs or burial grounds just as we are today. They would o en celebrate the Eucharist at the tomb. Before long, as soon as Chris ans were allowed to build places for worship, they relocated cemeteries from beyond the city walls to surround the church. This was not so much because the church made the ground holy, but because the bodies of the saints hallowed the ground on which the church was built, a subtle but beau ful difference. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. November 18, rd Sunday of Ordinary Time Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Fray Gilberto Cavazos Glz, OFM, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

A Safe Environment For Children, Youth, and Vulnerable Persons The Catholic Church is absolutely commi ed to the safety of children. Together we can make a Promise to Protect, and a Pledge to Heal. The Charlo e Diocese has adopted policies and procedures to safeguard those whose care has been entrusted to us. Background checks are required for all persons who volunteer in any capacity in the church, and a Protec ng God s Children class (and subsequent updates) are required of all who volunteer with children or vulnerable persons. Society of St. Vincent de Paul We would like to extend a huge thank you to all who par cipated in our annual food drive with goods, cash, and checks. Once again the outpouring of your support of our work has been super! As in previous years it will be enough for all three upcoming food basket distribu ons, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. We have had a huge savings in that we got our turkeys at no cost to us this year. Had we paid for them the cost would have been in excess of $680. Our next biggest expense is for milk, eggs, and oleo. The cash and checks we receive go towards that expense. A lot of hours go into our holiday food baskets, including menu prepara on, buying the food, arranging for storage of the turkeys, packing the boxes, and communica ng with our clients to see if they need food baskets. Some of our clients have be ered their circumstances since last year through be er jobs and benefits, and won't need a food basket this year. Our goal in helping clients is to get them to a point where they can pay their own bills and stand on their own. Some have made their finances more manageable by ge ng on equal payment plans for their u li es. We are very grateful for their success and wish them the best. In the last two Thursdays there have been 22 families who visited our pantry for food. Of those 14 received diapers as well. We like to keep you up to date on what we are doing. We do our best to put the funds you entrust to us to the best possible use. Your Vincen ans ext. 308
