Harold Fry, recently retired and living a very boring life while married to a very annoying woman, receives a letter from an old friend whom he hasn t seen or heard from in 20 years. She s in hospice and is writing to say goodbye. A chance encounter on his way to mail his reply convinces Harold that he needs to deliver his letter in person, and so he starts on a very long walk. 3 FROM FR. JAY Today we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity in our liturgical celebrations. The Trinity (one God in three divine Persons) is a basic belief of Christianity. It is also one that Jesus does not really talk about much in his ministry. There are certainly references to God the Father, especially when Jesus claims that he and the Father are one. Also, we see examples of the Father in his presence both at Jesus s Baptism and his Transfiguration. There is also mention of the Spirit descending upon Jesus at his Baptism and at the end of his ministry his promise to send another Advocate, the Spirit, to his disciples. The most important reference that our Lord makes to the Trinity is when he tells the Apostles to preach the Gospel and baptize in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. While stating the fact, Christ does not explain how this Triune God can be compatible with our human knowledge. For centuries Christian theologians have sought to put it in human language which is often confusing for us to understand. Perhaps we will never truly understand this mystery until we are with God. None-the-less, we celebrate this reality with faith, believing and glorifying the Trinity. This Monday we celebrate Memorial Day, an American holiday originally founded to remember the sacrifices of the Union s Civil War soldiers. Unfortunately, our country has been involved in many armed conflicts since then. Today it is a true opportunity for all of us to honor the veterans of all these conflicts who have sacrificed so much for the freedoms we enjoy and often take for granted. Please take a moment this Monday to remember in prayer these brave men and women. Honor them and the sacrifices they have made and celebrate the freedoms we enjoy because of them. Finally, I ask you to remember the Catholic Charities Appeal. While the Church has been accused of many faults these past few months, Catholic Charities has not been accused of any of them. Their vital work in the 8 counties of Western New York which encompass the Diocese of Buffalo, has won national praise for its dedication to those in need. Please help them to continue these important works. If you have not donated to Catholic Charities this year please make a contribution or pledge today. If you have made your commitment, Thank you! What about you? Are you? I don t think I have the time for it. All I want and desire and intend to do is to be close to broken people. To associate myself with those in pain. To help encourage the discouraged. To help lift the fallen. To give hope to the hopeless. To direct a sinner towards the mercy of God. To embrace the lonely, the rejected and the unloved. To speak up for the oppressed, those treated unfairly and unjustly. The victims of racism, prejudice and bias. I am not in the business of criticizing; always pointing out errors, always putting down other people, always speaking of others, always making other people look bad. I want to be remembered as one who uplifts others, who care for others, who shows mercy and compassion towards people. One who is kind, caring and loving towards others. I want to be known as one who helps to bring the best in people. Where people see incompetence, I want to see competence. Where people see darkness, I want to see light. Where people see failure, I want to see success. I don t give up on anyone. I don t write anyone off. I don t look down on anyone. I believe in the good in people. I believe that we all make mistakes. I believe that no one is perfect. I believe that no one has it all together. We all are struggling. I m not in the finger pointing business. Rather than focusing on other people s lives, I want to work on myself and see how I can grow and become a better person. I want to come across to people as one willing to listen to them, to journey with them, to support them and not make them look bad. FAITH MOMENT REFLECTION In today's Gospel reading, the disciples resist Jesus and doubt his orders to them to "make disciples of all nations." Despite their hesitation, Jesus trusts the disciples with the responsibility for His work on earth. He tells them, "I am with you always." Over two thousand years later, we can see the disciples did a great job of carrying out their responsibility. Do you ever feel you are not prepared for the responsibility God calls you to? When this happens, stop and say a prayer. Ask God for His guidance and direction. God has entrusted you with a specific purpose in your life and He will not let you down. He is with you always. Remember this to help you: "God doesn't call the equipped. He equips the called." Today's Faith Moment was provided by Christ the King Seminary. 5 ST. PIUS X EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP My wife and I have used the same baptismal gown for all 3 of our children. It is a very long traditional gown made with fabric taken from my wife's first communion dress and my mother-in-law's wedding gown. It is a symbol not just of each child being washed clean by the sacrament, but also of family and how faith has been passed down through generations. Faith is a gift and that gown shows how this family has taken seriously the cultivation of that faith and the sharing of it with those we love the most. By our baptism we are called to a discipleship that compels us to share our faith with others. It is not always easy, but it would be wrong to horde that faith and not let it shine for others to see. When we think about a stewardship way of life, we sometimes focus on material goods, our talents and skills, or our time. But faith is a gift that needs to be treated in a similar way. We are heirs with Jesus Christ to this rich tapestry of faith and the Church. If all of us were to hide that faith and not seek to share it with others, that lineage would end with us. We live during a time in history where in some lands people are finding Jesus in huge numbers, while in other places the numbers of people in the pews is declining sharply. We can spend all our time talking about these realities or we can choose to respond to our baptismal call. Jesus commanded us to go forth and make disciples of all nations. Maybe we can begin with our neighbor.
