3 FROM FR. JAY Today we begin our 3 weeks counting of the attendees at each individual Mass. Don t be surprised if you notice people counting the number of those attending your Mass during the Offertory. In regard to this we received the following from the Bishop. Easter blessings to you all! I want to touch base regarding the upcoming Mass attendance project. I know there is some concern over the details and rationale of this undertaking. I remind you that this is a simple fact-finding project. The Presbyteral (Priests) Council felt it important to assess every parish s Mass schedule as a first step to see if we are offering appropriate schedules of Masses for our congregations. As previously mentioned, of key importance are the spiritual and physical well-being of our presbyterate (priests) and the offering of vibrant liturgies for God s people. After the numbers are returned to the Vicars in early May, there will be a form for Vicars/Vicariates to use to make recommendations for possible adjustments to some Mass schedules. The Vicars will bring them to the Task Force to study. From there, in the fall, any of the recommendations that have been made by both the Vicars and the Task Force will be brought to me. Absolutely nothing has been decided in advance. Thank you again for your participation in this important endeavor. Yours fraternally in Christ, Most Reverend Richard J. Malone Bishop of Buffalo FROM THE DIOCESE The Bishop is asking all parishes to engage in a collaborate effort to look at Mass schedules and Mass attendance. This will be coordinated at the Vicariate level with suggestions to be sent to a Diocesan Task Force that has been established by the Bishop. Engagement in this process at the parish level will be vital in creating a revised and coordinated Vicariate Mass schedule that will promote the physical and spiritual wellbeing of priests as well as provide quality liturgical celebrations in each parish. FROM DEACON VENATIUS None of us are perfect. We all make mistakes. We all have a past. There are things we have done in the past that we always look back at with shame and embarrassment. Who among us is without sin? Who among us has not fallen? We are weak human beings, prone to error and bad judgements. We often make bad decisions and stray. Let us be patient with ourselves and with one another. Let us not be too quick to condemn ourselves and others. Let us pray for ourselves and for one another. Let us remember that we are only human beings, we are not angels. We are a work in progress. We learn every day. We grow every day. We become better every day. We become the best version of ourselves every day. God loves us despite the fact we are sinners. In fact, we are loved. Every sinner has a future and every saint has a past. We should not give up on ourselves or other people. Let us continue to make an honest and sincere effort. Stop blaming yourself, stop punishing yourself, stop living in guilt and grief. We have a God who is rich in mercy, very gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and always willing to forgive. Let us be more understanding and loving towards ourselves and towards other people. EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP If you ask me to tell you about one of my sons, my daughter, or my wife, I could spend quite some time elaborating on them as individuals and my interactions with them throughout the years. An authentic relationship leads each party into a rich knowledge of the other. If I have little to say about someone other than some incidental information or gossip, I cannot claim to really know him or her. Indeed, every relationship has expectations. If we do not know the needs of the other or the responses expected in living out the relationship, we easily create division and separation. I do certain things for my children because I am a parent. I respond in certain ways to my wife based upon her needs. If I am oblivious, or just don't care, the relationship will move on a path toward hurt, pain, and in some instances, permanent separation. To know Jesus is to love Jesus. The key is you actually have to know him. Knowing him is listening to his words and keeping his commands. Just like in all relationships, we will fall short at times. However, because we know the expectations we can then make amends and continue to grow together. So if I asked you to tell me about this friend of yours named Jesus, what would you say? --Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS WORD OF LIFE A model of care has been developed specifically for families whose infant is likely to die before or after birth. Often called perinatal hospice, it's a way of caring for both the baby and the baby's family before, as well as after, birth. USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, Supporting Families Who Receive a Prenatal Diagnosis THANK YOU FOR WORSHIPPING AT ST. PIUS X
4 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER There are many people we admire or revere whom we will never see in person: athletes, artists, actors, etc. We enjoy their work and accomplishments and read about their lives in books and magazines. We sometimes get so involved in who they are that we almost feel like we know them. We may be their biggest fans and then share our love of them with others. We do all of this, yet we have never even see them in the flesh with our own eyes. Some think this is the way with Jesus. They believe He is the Son of God and the savior of the world, but He is still someone up in heaven, and we will get a chance to see Him "for real" when we die or when He comes again. They may even say that until those times occur, He resides only in our hearts. But those in the Gospels saw who He was in the breaking of the bread. And today, in 2018, He is here in our midst for all eyes to see. He is here really and truly every time we break the bread. There is no need for worship from afar. Just open your eyes. LOST AND FOUND There is a silver Apple iphone at the Rectory. If it belongs to you, please contact Lynn at You will need to unlock it to prove identity. Thank you! ST. VINCENT de PAUL SOCIETY The St. Vincent de Paul Society has two Blue clothing bins for our parish and they are located in the parking lot near the rectory. They are CLOTHING ON- LY bins and no other material of any kind should be placed inside. Through this program, SVDP has collected countless pieces of clothing enabling them to help many men, women & children throughout WNY. All clothing should be packed in plastic bags. Please NO LOOSE ITEMS. In addition, The Saint Vincent de Paul Society will pick up appliances and household goods at your home. To schedule a pickup call Thank you for helping out! MAY 7th BOOK CLUB MEETING Our May book, The Natural by Bernard Malamud, is considered classic literature about Roy Hobbs who is a natural baseball player. A very popular movie was made from this novel which tells the story of a country boy who rises to fame as a baseball player - how he handles his fame and life as a hero and star. It includes a lot of baseball myths and superstitions. Please join us on Monday, May 7 at 1:00pm in the Father Weber Center as we delve into this very brilliant and unusual book and some would say, the best novel ever written about baseball.
