You are such a focused, committed, mission driven and caring congregation. Pam and I look forward to re-kindling faith relationships with all of you. And to those who are of more recent vintage to the Acton faithfamily, we look forward to becoming acquainted with you for the first time. I am honored to be asked to spend the summer with you as your pastor has the wonderful opportunity of an Eli Lilly Sabbatical grant. What a wonderful gift for him and his family. I have had the opportunity to spend several conversations with him in preparation for this venture. It is clear to me that he is a committed and passionate pastor on behalf of Christ. I know that you must be enjoying his ministry with you. He is engaging and focused, and he calls you forward in your own faith growth with such passion. I have continued my ministry of healing and reconciliation for churches and pastors during these past years. Mediation is just another way of naming group counseling. In addition to working with two to three churches a year, I have had the opportunity to do several District workshops and a Conference workshop. My passion is to help local churches and pastors to be the best that they can be as everyone works together that they can be as everyone works together to extend God s kingdom into the fabric of this world. It will be a privilege to come and worship with you in this atmosphere of faith strength. As I met with Pastor Matthew, Felicia and Donna along with several of you who dropped into the office on business there was joy in the atmosphere. Great! So---The proposed worship/preaching schedule for the weeks of June will swirl around the theme of the Power and Mystery of God s Presence. This will build off of the liturgical focus on Pentecost. It is the season to explore our Trinitarian faith and the subsequent work of the Holy Spirit. Then in July and on into August, as far as you take me, I will invite you to lead me in a sermon series entitled: A Biblical Text I Have Never Understood. The earlier you turn it in, the better chance I have to prepare a response. So be nice, and let me know sooner than later what you would like to learn about. Nothing in the Bible is off limits! In the midst of this will be VBS and the infamous Garage Sale. I look forward to experiencing all of this with you. And don t forget Pastor Matthew s invitation to the table journey. See you on June 11 th! Pastor Rick Don t miss Pastor Matthew s article on page 9

Thanks for all the desserts. #table2017 SAWS AT IT AGAIN The SAWS team s last project contained both dismantle and construction. The client was moving from Beech Grove where a ramp had been built using a backhoe to cut through a hillside. He moved to a trailer park off London Road. We saved the material to the extent we could from the Beech Grove address, then transported it to the London Road address. Much of the old wood could not be salvaged from the hillside, therefore we added new wood as needed. All hardware in the new ramp was new. Thanks to all who helped. 7 I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY A TOWNSHIP TRADITION OF GIVING LOVE LEARN SHARE SERVE There are kids everywhere that are in need and that is no different here in Franklin Township. For the last 10 years, Franklin Township Community Schools have held Fast Track. Fast Track is a program through the school system that provides backpacks, basic school supplies and community resources to students and families in Franklin Township that need assistance. Besides a backpack and school supplies, students can get a free haircut, dental exams and vision screening. What a great way to start the school year! Over 1,000 kids attend this event each year in all age groups, Kindergarten through High School. This year s Fast Track will be held on July 16 th from 7:45-12:00 at Franklin Township Middles School West. The cost to fill one student s backpack with basic supplies needed for the first day of school is about $ Financial donations come from local businesses, school parent organizations and fundraisers, Franklin Township Chamber of Commerce, Franklin Township Lion s Club, FTEF, and local families. We can help in several ways: Volunteer Volunteers are needed the day of the event. 9 FROM TABLET TO TABLE ACTON RENEWAL LOVE LEARN SHARE SERVE As part of a Lilly Renewal Grant, this summer Acton will share our table experiences and renew our spirits, our hearts and our love for serving more than just food. All the work and preparation has finally led to this moment as I prepare to begin Renewal Leave. I am so very thankful for our leadership, Congregational Council and Staff Parish, for their thoughtful questions and planning before we even applied for the grant. I am thankful for my Renewal Leave Team, Mark Woodrow, Brad Repass, Andy Crane, and Felicia Crowel. Over the course of nearly 20 years of ministry, there have been many family events missed, days off skipped, and vacations interrupted. That s part of being a pastor. You don t have an off button when someone needs you. But that sort of attitude doesn t serve anyone well and with age and wisdom needs to come balance. I m not the savior, Jesus is, otherwise that attitude depletes the energy of the pastor, disconnects from family, and eventually changes quality of care for the congregation. Jesus regularly went away to rest and pray. That is the image I m clinging to for the next three months. I want to strengthen my ties to my children and my wife and to spend some time reflecting on somewhat of a halfway point of ministry. I want to prayerfully go over my vows of ordination and drink from the refreshing, living water of my baptism. I want to recommit to those vows and covenant to take better care of myself, spiritually and physically. My hope is to return to you refreshed and in rhythm with God s Spirit. Let me be candid, I m not broken. I m not frustrated with ministry. In fact, this is the most energized I have ever felt serving a congregation. You are a wonderful gathering of the Body of Christ and you help make ministry a true joy. So I m going away and I m going to have fun. I m going to smile and laugh with my kids. I m going to smooch my beautiful wife in front of a majestic mountain backdrop. I m going to yell out when my dad hauls in a huge salmon in Alaska. When I return I will be ready for whatever God is calling us to do together. I will remain on social media to post reflections and pictures of #table2017. I hope this will be a time where you can focus on your table with friends and family. You can post your pictures on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter and even them directly to the church office. Thank you for all your love and support, I can t wait to see what God has planned for our future! #table2017 Don t forget to post your table experiences with #table2017 or them to the office. Let s share and celebrate the dinner table together. Can you find all the times Acton spends time at the table together. Hint #table2017 Pick up your copy of Tablet to Table by Leonard Sweet. This is a gift to each family as part of the grant. Discuss the book with someone while sharing a meal. #table2017 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Luke 5:16NIV What is a renewal leave? It s an extended leave from ordinary work; a period of rest for body, mind, and soul; a time for renewal and development of relationships with God and others. Once again she has performed a special task for our church by completing the 2016 audit of our church financial records. Some of the most important jobs at the church are done and yet no one ever sees the work being completed and the annual audit is definitely one of those. It is important that each member of the church knows that our records are accurate and that our church is on a sound financial foundation. The audit is available for anyone to view in the office and a copy will be sent to the conference for their review. The next time you see Peg, thank her for her hard work on behalf of everyone at AUMC. FEAST OF WEEKS Thanks to everyone who was able to donate items to God s Bounty during Feast of Weeks. 211 pounds of food were collected on May 21 st during worship for God s Bounty. Food for God s Bounty can be brought to church any time. Take a red Food Pantry bag to help you remember. The Mission Team makes sure it gets to God s Bounty. CHILD PROTECTION TRAINING If you work with the kids at Acton, you need to have Children Protection Training every two years. If you haven t had it, the last class will be held on June 11 th after worship in the sanctuary. Please see Sally Grau if you have any questions. Sally Grau and Trudi Wolfe are conducting the training. Follow us on
