Her generosity is mirrored in the widow in the temple who gives from her poverty and not from power, privilege, or excess. In Jesus God becomes poor for us, offering himself to take away our sins. Claudia Hooper - In thanksgiving to Saints Elizabeth and Philomena THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. The Diocese of Brooklyn Commission on Racism and Social Justice Since the tragic and horrific events of Charlottesville Virginia just one year ago, we have seen the effect and impact that racism has had on our society. The Bishops of the United States has formed a committee to focus and address the sin of racism. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio has formed a Commission on Racism and Social Justice. The goal of this commission is to deal with the social and religious problems that racism in all of its forms presents to us. The commission will like to hear from all of the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn. To that end we will be hosting an open listening session for all the faithful of the diocese to attend. This session is meant to be an opportunity for us to share how racism has impacted our parishes and the church as a whole.
