1 ECCCM has been a service to others since 1969 Rev. Robert C. Silber, Executive Director ECCCM Mission: To bring together the resources of the Christian community to serve people in need of crisis assistance, support and education in response to God s call. First Quarter 2014 CRISIS ASSISTANCE COACHING PROGRAM ECCCM News The Crisis Assistance Coaching Program (CACP) first began in the fall of 2011 as a method to educate our residents about financial literacy and further implement our philosophy of a hand up, not a hand out. ECCCM partners with The United Way and Family Guidance Center in Catawba County to invest in the lives of local residents who, perhaps through no fault of their own, are experiencing a crisis. CACP is a requirement for all clients who receive assistance from ECCCM resources once and wish to be eligible to apply for locally funded assistance in the future. It is a four hour program which is offered in two ways: once a week for one hour during a month or, if a client is employed, a Saturday session which is the total four hours in one day. The workshops share information on a variety of topics: budgeting skills/money saving tips, workforce development, successful goal planning, community resources, healthy habits, couponing, and menu planning. In 2013 the CACP program had over 450 clients successfully complete the sessions. With each individual learning how to live within their means, the positive ripple effect spreads the methods of financial literacy to all household members. Over 1800 individuals have been impacted with the CACP ministry. As a crisis ministry, ECCCM strives to serve our community by providing food, clothing, and financial assistance as well as educating residents along their path to self-sufficiency. Eastern Catawba Cooperative Christian Ministry (ECCCM) is a strong partner agency with Catawba County United Way (CCUW) as we Live United! CCUW joins with ECCCM by providing funding for both crisis assistance and our Crisis Assistance Coaching Program (CACP). Through CACP in 2013, 1,828 lives were impacted as 457 families were assisted with workshops focusing on financial literacy education, workforce development, goal achievement, and creative menu planning on a budget. This partnership includes Family Guidance Center and the North Carolina Foreclosure Prevention Program. During 2013, fifteen families were referred to Family Guidance Center by ECCCM for further financial counseling and twelve homes were saved from the grim fate of foreclosure in our county. Compassion in action is the ultimate result of our local collaborations. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES We need you! There is always room for more volunteers as our ministry continues to expand the number of services we provide. There are positions available in our thrift store, food pantry, and warehouse. We have volunteers from their teens to past retirement. The common link between us is ECCCM s motto in action. giving a hand up to those in need and not a hand out. If you have a heart for service to others, we hope you consider coming to ECCCM. You will be blessed as you bless others with your service. Call Guynell Sears, Executive Assistant at To schedule an appointment to make a difference in our community. Volunteers are not paid, not because they are worthless but because they are priceless!

Becky Bates shops with help from Alice McCorkle JOIN OUR ECCCM MINISTRY ON WHEELS PROGRAM A very meaningful way in which you, your church or organization can support the good and necessary work at ECCCM is through a donation drive. To support your donation drive effort, and to facilitate ease of donations collection and delivery to ECCCM, we will provide a ministry van at your location for receiving the donations as they come to your location. An ECCCM driver will bring the van to your location for an agreed upon time period, then return for the van and bring your donations to the ECCCM Ministry Center. The ECCCM Ministry on Wheels is another way that you can support your crisis assistance ministry, filling the ECCCM Thrift Store with your used items. As ECCCM continues to practice good stewardship, all proceeds from Thrift Store sales are directed toward providing crisis assistance for our friends and neighbors who are struggling to make ends meet. Only 6.7% of every dollar received by ECCCM goes to administrative costs; 93.3% goes to meet the needs of our fellow citizens in crisis. This is an excellent opportunity for: Church donation drives Civic groups and organizations Local businesses Residents who are settling an estate Remember that ECCCM accepts worn clothing, shoes, purses, etc., no longer serviceable, for recycling. To schedule an ECCCM Ministry on Wheels van for your donation drive, contact Guynell Sears, Executive Assistant at (828) or executiveassistant@ecccm.org

9 ECCCM NEWS Page 9 WAYS YOU CAN SUPPORT THE GOOD WORK OF ECCCM! Imagine the child who goes to bed without supper, feeling hungry and struggling to sleep because of the growling and emptiness in her stomach. Consider the senior veteran who chooses between paying for medicines or eating. Think about a single-mom who does not pay her power bill in order to put a peanut butter sandwich on the table for her son. With your support all of these people are fed by ECCCM. A gift of $250 will provide the equivalent of food for four families for a month. Join your neighbors by donating to The Feinstein Challenge to help feed the hungry. ALAN SHAWN FEINSTEIN CHALLENGE For the 17th consecutive year, Alan Shawn Feinstein will divide $1 million among non-profit hunger fighting agencies nationwide using it as a spur to help them raise funds this March and April. The Foundation is dedicated to the alleviation of hunger, the importance of community service in education and the values of caring, compassion and brotherhood. The Feinstein Foundation will donate a percentage of all funds collected during March and April. Please consider donating to ECCCM or pledging a donation to be given by Dec. 31, It is a win/win giving campaign! By your giving, we receive additional funds from the Foundation to serve the residents in our community. Thank you for your support. Please contact Guynell Sears with questions at or at ExecutiveAssistant@ECCCM.org. REMEMBER THE ECCCM ENDOWMENT FUND Have you ever wondered how you might make a gift or memorial to ECCCM that helps not only when you give it, but continues to give for years afterward? Please consider including the ECCCM Endowment Fund in your giving plans. The money you donate to the Endowment Fund goes into a pool which is carefully invested. Each year 5% of the pooled money is given to ECCCM to carry out our charitable missions. A popular use for trust funds is to make them a beneficiary of a donor s will, or for memorial gifts to commemorate the life of a loved one. Since gifts to a trust fund like ECCCM s are not spent off, but continue to grow over the years, it leaves a lasting footprint of the donor that continues to be recognized for years into the future. Through your gift to ECCCM Endowment Fund now, or later in your will, you can contribute to helping ECCCM make a difference in the community. For more information visit our website at or to set up your contribution contact Rev. Bob Silber, Executive Director at or him at ExecutiveDirector@ECCCM.org. PARTNERSHIP IN MINISTRY PROGRAM ECCCM has developed an easy way for you to support our ministry in Catawba County as we help those in crisis. Applicants request assistance with the basic daily needs of emergency food, clothing, utility bill payments, mortgage and rent assistance, life-necessary pharmaceutical s, and fuel oil or kerosene purchases. Each applicant undergoes a personal interview to determine their financial condition and a verifiable demonstration of need through supporting documents. Through your generous support to ECCCM, you can make a significant difference in the lives of those in need on a daily basis. How? A taxdeductible gift of $1000 will provide the equivalent of mortgage and rent assistance to four families, eliminating foreclosure or eviction. A gift of $500 will provide the equivalent of utility assistance to four families, maintaining electric service we all rely on. By making a commitment now to ECCCM through a regular bank draft we can plan our budget more efficiently and take the burden of check writing from you. Simply fill out the form below, attach a voided check and we will take care of the rest. You will receive a follow up letter confirming your donation, which is tax deductible. Thank your for your Partnership in Ministry as together we give others a hand up As always, you can depend on ECCCM to be good stewards of your donation! Name: Address: Telephone Number ( home) - - (cell) - - Address: Amount per month: $20.00 $50.00 $ Other $ Draft on the 1st of each month or 15th of each month (please check one) I agree to a monthly draft to ECCCM in the amount shown above. I understand I can stop this draft at any time by calling ECCCM. Attached is my voided check. Signed:

10 ECCCM NEWS Page 10 FIRST ANNUAL FALL GALA Thank you to everyone who attended the 1st Annual Fall Gala On November 6, 2013! The gala was held at the Catawba Country Club with huge success. The evening included dinner, dancing, and a live auction. All encouraged us to continue this event on an annual basis. So remember to save Saturday evening November 8, 2014 this year for ECCCM. Have fun with your friends and neighbors and at the same time support our community. ministry. 4 ANNUAL LETTER-CARRIERS FOOD DRIVE We need 1 or more youth groups to volunteer for a time slot from 1pm 5pm on May 10th for a few hours to assist in the Letter-Carriers Food Drive. Catawba County residents will be able to donate needed non-perishable food items at their mailbox and the letter-carriers will pick the food up when they deliver the mail. Volunteers are needed to unload the food from the mail trucks at the US Post Office in Newton. Contact Guynell Sears at or her at ExecutiveAssistant@ecccm.org to get involved! Great opportunity to get service learning hours for Beta Club, scouts, or other school organizations! SMOKE FREE AND TOBACCO FREE We are delighted to announce that ECCCM is a Smoke Free and Tobacco Free campus effective as of January 1, A partnership with Catawba County Government enabled ECCCM to move forward with community support for health awareness. According to the World Health Organization, there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. ECCCM recognizes that having entirely smoke-free grounds is the only effective way to protect its employees and visitors from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke exposure. CHURCH AMBASSADORS The Ambassador program was created to provide a more efficient way of communicating opportunities for participation within their congregation. An ECCCM Ambassador helps further the ministry in their Church and in their sphere of influence in their community to glorify God by serving in both witness and deed for those in need. Ambassadors become familiar with the services that ECCCM provides so that they may be prepared to direct those in need within their church and community. In turn, ambassadors also provide ECCCM with information about their church and its mission work, and how ECCCM can be a part of their ministry. Please contact Guynell Sears, Executive Assistant, at (828) or her executiveassistant@ecccm.org to learn about upcoming orientations. The next orientation is scheduled for May 21, 2014 from 12:00-1:00 pm. Lunch will be provided. Together we will continue to do more than any of us can achieve alone.

On your church week we hope to see several members of your congregation each day Monday thru Thursday. Your volunteering is a two-fold benefit for the Ministry and your congregation. The Ministry always needs your help due to the amount of food we distribute and the amount of crisis we give to the community. We could not accomplish this work without you. The members of your congregation will leave with a better understanding of ECCCM and how the Ministry helps our community. ECCCM CONTINUES CHRISTMAS BUREAU PARTNERSHIP The Christmas Bureau is a collaborative effort among several area organizations to provide food, toys, and coats to those in crisis during the Christmas season. This united effort allows participating agencies to coordinate services, prevent duplication of services and to reach more families. ECCCM partners with Catawba County United Way as longtime co-chairs along with Salvation Army for the event. ECCCM plays a vital role by writing grants to receive funding to purchase food vouchers for all those who are eligible for assistance from the Christmas Bureau. In addition, ECCCM provides shopping carts for the two day extravaganza. In 2013, over 1200 households were served and over 3000 children were provided food, clothes, and toys for their Christmas. Volunteers assist local recipients during Christmas Bureau 2013 During this two-day distribution, the community shares its good will to those who are struggling. This is a moment when we exercise our Christian values and share with others. -- Rev. Robert Silber, Executive Director ECCCM
