5 Studies SUNDAY MORNING ADULT FORUM Meet Martin Luther: October 1 and 8, 2017 at 9:45am I will take a more relaxed approach to Luther scholarship this time, compared to my two previous presentations, by using a movie about Martin Luther, which we will view over two weeks. I believe the movie does an excellent job of placing Luther in his own time, even if that time is now 500 hundred years ago. Regardless of what you know about Luther s life, the movie is appropriate for you. It is an excellent introduction to or review of who he was and what he was trying to say, and yet, it also pushes those who know him well to ask important questions. Our two-week viewing of the film and conversation about it should provide us with a significant part of our consideration of the importance of the Reformation to the church today, as we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. Richard Andersen Join us for Women s Bible Study Tuesday Women s Study continues each week at 10:00am or 6:30pm in the Fellowship Hall, using a book study written by Episcopal priest and college chaplain, Alice Connor, titled: Fierce: Women of the Bible and Their Stories of Violence, Mercy, Bravery, Wisdom, Sex, and Salvation. Women of the Bible aren t shy or retiring; they re fierce and funny and demanding and relevant to 21 st century people. Some of their names we know, others we ve only heard, and others are tragically unnamed. Each Tuesday we ll meet a different woman from the Bible. Come each week or when you can! And hang on to your September and October issues of Gather magazine. We will be using the Bible study on The Apostles Creed from this magazine sometime this fall on three Tuesdays. If you don t subscribe, and if there are no more complimentary copies available in the entryway, I will have copies of the study for you. Join us on Tuesday morning at 10:00am or Tuesday evening at 6:30pm for about 90 minutes of conversation, prayer, and learning together. Bring your Bible! The coffee will be on, as well as hot water for tea or hot chocolate. You can order the paperback or Kindle edition from Amazon. Purchasing a book isn t required. Questions? Contact Myrna Ulland at myrna.ulland@gmail.com

7 It can be a lot easier making a commitment than keeping one. It can also be easier to do what we want to, when we want to, rather than do what we know we should. We oftentimes take the same approach when God asks us to do something. We choose to do the "easy" thing. Even though we want to obey Him and want to do the right thing, sometimes it's just inconvenient. We think, "Maybe tomorrow it'll be easier." In our lesson this week, we read about The Parable of the Two Sons. This parable reminds us what true obedience is, and what it means to do God's will. One son tells his father, "Yes, I'll work in the vineyard as you ask!" But then, he doesn't do it. The other son initially says "No" to his father, but then ends up doing what his father has asked. The religious leaders who had questioned Jesus' authority could be compared to the son who seemed at first to be obedient, but then changed his mind. The religious leaders appeared to be obedient to God, but in reality, their motives in questioning Jesus' authority were all wrong. Jesus showed that they wanted the truth only if it supported their personal views and causes. On the other hand, the tax collectors and prostitutes in the parable could be compared to the son who initially was disobedient, but then obeyed his father. Both the tax collectors and the prostitutes were openly committing sins against God and others, but many of them repented of their sins and started living lives that were obedient and pleasing to God. Most of us will agree that the son who was ultimately obedient to his father made the right choice in the end. However, we can also see that neither son reacted as they should have to their father. The best situation would have been for both sons to cheerfully, without hesitation, obey their father. Just like we are called to obey our Father in Heaven. Which son or daughter do we choose to be when we're asked to help a neighbor or a stranger or a servant team member? Do our actions match our words and the heart of a disciple? Doing God's will may not always be the easiest choice to make, but it is always the right choice. Frank and Carolyn Stock
