2 Order of Matins January 12 & 13, 2019 Welcome and Greetings to Our Guests! If you re new here, we welcome you in the name of Jesus. We also sincerely hope that you will come and worship with us again! As a reminder, please turn off or silence your cell phones during the service. As We Gather Have you ever thought about how powerful fear and worry are in our lives? Fear takes hold. It ties us in knots and refuses to let us go. On our own, we re powerless to undo these fear knots. Only Jesus has the power to release us from their captivity. Fear not, He says to His redeemed people! You are Mine, He refreshingly reminds us. Our worship on this Baptism of Our Lord Sunday brings us with Jesus to the baptismal waters, enabling us to hear the living voice of our God as He washes us clean and makes us His own. Fear may take its hold for a moment, but Jesus hold is eternal. Fear knots may have their day. 3 onfession and Absolution Since we are gathered to hear the Word of God, which speaks over us in the waters of Baptism, to call upon our God in prayer and praise, which is the response of those who have been made His own before our God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed. We cannot set ourselves free from the entanglement of our sinful condition. Therefore, together as one people, united to hrist s death and resurrection, let us take refuge in the faithfulness of our God, seeking His forgiveness and grace, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. Almighty God, have mercy upon us. Speak over us words of life. Forgive us our sins and lead us with Jesus to life everlasting. Amen. Almighty God, your merciful Father, has declared you in Holy Baptism to be His child and has gathered you into the family of His hurch, in which He daily and richly forgives all your sins and grants you new life through His Spirit. In the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus hrist, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3 Or don t you know that all of us who were baptized into hrist Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as hrist was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his. 6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin 7 because anyone who has died has been set free from sin. 8 Now if we died with hrist, we believe that we will also live with him. 9 For we know that since hrist was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. 10 The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. 11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in hrist Jesus. R O Lord, have mercy on us. Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel Luke 3:15-22 A The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the third chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 15 A The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire. 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them. 19 But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison. 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased. 6 atechetical Instruction- Baptism What is Baptism? Baptism is not just plain water, but it is the water included in God s command and combined with God s word. Which is that word of God? hrist our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. (Matthew 28:19) What benefits does Baptism give? It works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare. Which are these words and promises of God? hrist our Lord says in the last chapter of Mark: Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:16) How can water do such great things? ertainly not just water, but the word of God in and with the water does these things, along with the faith which trusts this word of God in the water. For without God s word the water is plain water and no Baptism. But with the word of God it is a Baptism, that is, a life-giving water, rich in grace, and a washing of the new birth in the Holy Spirit, as St. aul says in Titus, chapter three: He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us generously through Jesus hrist our Savior, so that, having been justified by His grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. This is a trustworthy saying. (Titus 3:5 8) What does such baptizing with water indicate? It indicates that the Old Adam in us should by daily contrition and repentance be drowned and die with all sins and evil desires, and that a new man should daily emerge and arise to live before God in righteousness and purity forever. Where is this written? - age 6 -

7 St. aul writes in Romans, chapter six: We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as hrist was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. For the calling of all people to faith, that the souls for whom Jesus hrist gave His life would be brought to repentance and saving faith through the proclamation of the Gospel throughout the world, let us pray to the Lord. Living Father, speak Your words of life! For all those who are united to Jesus death and resurrection in the waters of their Baptism, that the life of God s people would be marked by the Spirit s fruit of faith, hope, and love, let us pray to the Lord. leansing Father, speak Your words of life! For all pastors, teachers, and other servant leaders in hrist s hurch, that their lives be shaped by the One who laid down His life in selfless sacrifice for others, let us pray to the Lord. Serving Father, speak Your words of life! For all who hear God s Word, receive His Sacrament, and live out their vocations in the church, home, workplace, and society, that their witness to hrist in word and action may touch countless hearts and lives, let us pray to the Lord. Loving Father, speak Your words of life! For all who labor in positions of leadership in our government, along with all who serve in the armed forces and other public safety professions, that the living voice of our God speak over land, over water, and over all who trust in Him, let us pray to the Lord. rotecting Father, speak Your words of life! For all who are ailing in body, mind, and spirit, [especially...], that the Lord would speak words and work wonders to deliver His healing and peace, let us pray to the Lord. Healing Father, speak Your words of life! Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend ourselves and all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy; through Jesus hrist, our Lord. Amen. - age 8 -
