1 and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end. And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy hristian and apostolic hurch, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life T of the world to come. Amen. Sacrament of Holy ommunion We celebrate the Lord s Supper at St. Mark Lutheran in the confidence that in this feast, our Lord gives us not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood. In ommunion, we receive forgiveness for our sins, a deeper relationship with hrist and with one another, and power to live a life that truly glorifies God. Our Lord invites to His feast those who believe this, repent of their sins, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love others as He forgives and loves us. Because the Bible tells us of the serious consequences of misusing the Lord s Supper (1 orinthians 11:17-34), we commune those who have been instructed in God s Word and who declare their faith in these truths. We welcome our guests and ask that you direct any questions in this regard to astor Gilson. For those not able to receive the wine, white grape juice is offered and is available in the middle of each communion tray. reface 724 If God Himself Be For Me, stanzas 1-3 Sermon Listen Up Isaiah 50:4-10 Sermon Notes - (For reflection now or later) Know What? - What is this section of God s Word saying? 2 roper reface Sanctus It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord, who came into the world to be the Servant who would provide vindication for His beloved. Because of His great love for us, we can be confident that He is near even to the end of the age. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: spirit that has robbed him of speech. 18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth, gnashes his teeth and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not. 19 You unbelieving generation, Jesus replied, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to me. 20 So they brought him. When the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 Jesus asked the boy s father, How long has he been like this? From childhood, he answered. 22 It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us. 23 If you can? said Jesus. Everything is possible for one who believes. 24 Immediately the boy s father exclaimed, I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief! 25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was running to the scene, he rebuked the impure spirit. You deaf and mute spirit, he said, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again. 26 The spirit shrieked, convulsed him violently and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said, He s dead. 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him to his feet, and he stood up. 28 After Jesus had gone indoors, his disciples asked him privately, Why couldn t we drive it out? 29 He replied, This kind can come out only by prayer. This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise to You, O hrist. Nicene reed The Words of Our Lord Our Lord Jesus hrist, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. roclamation of hrist As often as we eat this bread and drink this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until He comes. Amen. ome, Lord Jesus. I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus hrist, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under ontius ilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures 9 6
3 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. Epistle James 3:1 12 Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check. 3 When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5 Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. onsider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be. 11 an both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? 12 My brothers and sisters, can a fig tree bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Neither can a salt spring produce fresh water. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Lord s rayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. ax Domini The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen. Agnus Dei ommon Alleluia and Verse Distribution Hymns Holy Gospel Mark 9:14 29 The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the ninth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 14 When they came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and the teachers of the law arguing with them. 15 As soon as all the people saw Jesus, they were overwhelmed with wonder and ran to greet him. 16 What are you arguing with them about? he asked. 17 A man in the crowd answered, Teacher, I brought you my son, who is possessed by a 611 hief of Sinners Though I Be 620 Jesus omes Today With Healing Thank the Lord 5 10
4 Old Testament Isaiah 50:4 10 ost-ommunion Thanksgiving Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You gave Your Son to become true man to suffer and die for our vindication. Give us confidence in knowing that the One who vindicated us is always near; through Jesus hrist, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Lord God has given Me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning He awakens; He awakens My ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened My ear, and I was not rebellious; I turned not backward. I gave My back to those who strike, and My cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not My face from disgrace and spitting. But the Lord God helps Me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set My face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame. He who vindicates Me is near. Who will contend with Me? Let us stand up together. Who is My adversary? Let him come near to Me. Behold, the Lord God helps Me; who will declare Me guilty? Behold, all of them will wear out like a garment; the moth will eat them up. Who among you fears the Lord and obeys the voice of His servant? Let him who walks in darkness and has no light trust in the name of the Lord and rely on his God. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Benediction salm 116:1 2 I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because He inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace. Amen. 632 O Jesus, Blessed Lord, to Thee losing rayer ostlude salm salm 116:1 9; antiphon: v. 5 Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. 7 He Who Vindicates Is Near Sometimes it is helpful to unpack the meaning of churchy words that we may not encounter too often outside of worship. One of these types of words is vindicate. Vindicate can be defined as to free from allegation or blame or to clear someone of blame or suspicion. Today s Old Testament eading uses this word. It says, He who vindicates me is near (Isaiah 50:8a). The Lord, through His Son, Jesus, has not only freed us and cleared us, but He s also with us. When we have doubts about the Lord s presence, remember that He who vindicates you is near. When we struggle with illness, remember that He who vindicates you is near. When the future is uncertain, remember that He who vindicates you is near. Today! relude ome Thou Art Every Blessing Howard Meade Welcome 528 Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing Invocation In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Opening Sentences salm 116:1 2 I love the Lord, because He has heard my voice and my pleas for mercy. Because He inclined His ear to me, therefore I will call on Him as long as I live. Then I called on the name of the Lord: O Lord, I pray, deliver my soul! Gracious is the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. onfession and Absolution salm 116:4 5, 8 9 Since we are gathered to our Lord Jesus hrist in the fellowship of this altar, let us first consider our unworthiness and confess before God and one another that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, and that we cannot free ourselves from our sinful condition. Together as His people, let us take refuge in the infinite mercy of God our heavenly Father, seeking His grace for the sake of hrist, and saying: God, be merciful to me, a sinner. For You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling; I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living. Almighty God, have mercy upon us, forgive us our sins, and lead us to everlasting life. Amen. Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus hrist I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.
