Together With Faith We an: onnect, Grow and Serve The Second Sunday in Lent March 17, 2019 St. Mark Lutheran hurch 4475 Henry Street, Muskegon, MI * sml.muskegon@yahoo.com
Divine Service Setting 4 March 17, 2019 Welcome and Greetings to Our Guests! If you re new here, we welcome you in the name of Jesus. We also sincerely hope that you will come and worship with us again! Following the 9:30 am worship service, members and guests are invited to come down to the Upper Room for a cup of coffee, juice, snacks, and a time of fellowship with one another. lease join us for Bible Study on the book of John in the fellowship hall. As a reminder, please turn off or silence your cell phones during the service. As We Gather During Jesus earthly ministry, countless people saw Him. But not everyone came to see Him by faith for who He truly is: the blessed One who comes and saves them in the name of the Lord. eople today often see Jesus from a safe distance, but they refuse to see Him for the Savior He truly is, and they reject the work He has done to make the world right with God. Today we seek to be different than the majority around us. We long to see Jesus up close and personal, receiving Him in faith, acknowledging with heart and voice the redeeming work of His death and resurrection. Seeing Him now through His Word and Supper, and believing in Him by grace, we look forward to the day when we shall see Him face-to-face in the glories of heaven, singing forever with all of God s gathered children: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! relude Welcome Opening Hymn ome to alvary s Holy Mountain LSB 435 Invocation From the Latin, "to call upon." It serves as a reminder of Baptism and may be accompanied by the sign of the cross. In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. onfession and Absolution We confess our sins to God and receive God s forgiveness through the astor at the beginning of the service, so that we can worship God with a clean heart, and receive Jesus body and blood in a right way. Answer me when I call, O God of my righteousness! You have given me relief when I was in distress. Be gracious to me and hear my prayer! Lord God, our Father, hear the silent prayers of Your gathered children. - age 2
Silence for reflection and confession Lord God, our Father, hear the spoken prayers of Your gathered children. We have turned away from You when we should be turning toward You. Forgive us, heavenly Father. We have run from You when we should be running to You. Have mercy upon us, Lord Jesus. We have rejected Your grace when we should be receiving it. leanse us of our sin, Spirit of truth. Draw us again to the cross, where You died for us, so that we be gathered into Your presence and covered with Your forgiveness. Amen. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of hrist, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen! Kyrie From the Greek, it is a direct address to God, meaning "Lord, have mercy." It is not part of the confession of sins but a cry to God to have mercy on us and all humanity. Lord, have mercy. hrist, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Grant us Your peace. Amen. Salutation and ollect of the Day From the Latin salutatio, meaning "a greeting." A liturgical greeting by which the pastor blesses the people. A collect is a concisely written prayer that "collects" the prayers of the people. The collect usually follows a pattern of: address to God, basis for the prayer, petition, desired benefit or result, and Trinitarian closing. The Lord be with you. And also with you. O God, You know that of ourselves we have no strength to see You and believe. By the mighty power of Him who comes to us in the name of the Lord, draw us to saving faith in our Savior, defending us from all adversities that may happen to the body and from all evil thoughts that may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus hrist, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. - age 3
salm salm 4 Setting by Amanda Husberg A Reading from the assion of our Lord Jesus hrist A Hymn of the cross Oh, to see the dawn Of the darkest day: hrist on the road to alvary. Tried by sinful men, Torn and beaten, then Nailed to a cross of wood. The ower of the ross Stuart Townend and Keith Getty Refrain: This, the pow r of the cross: hrist became sin for us; Took the blame, bore the wrath We stand forgiven at the cross. - age 4
Oh, to see the pain Written on Your face, Bearing the awesome weight of sin. Ev ry bitter thought, Ev ry evil deed rowning Your bloodstained brow. Refrain Now the daylight flees; Now the ground beneath Quakes as its Maker bows His head. urtain torn in two, Dead are raised to life; Finished! the vict ry cry. Refrain Oh, to see my name Written in the wounds, For through Your suffering I am free. Death is crushed to death; Life is mine to live, Won through Your selfless love. Final Refrain: This, the pow r of the cross: Son of God slain for us. What a love! What a cost! We stand forgiven at the cross. Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 26: R But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, You must die! 9 Why do you prophesy in the LORD s name that this house will be like Shiloh and this city will be desolate and deserted? And all the people crowded around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD. 10 When the officials of Judah heard about these things, they went up from the royal palace to the house of the LORD and took their places at the entrance of the New Gate of the LORD s house. 11 Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and all the people, This man should be sentenced to death because he has prophesied against this city. You have heard it with your own ears! 12 Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people: The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the things you have heard. 13 Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the LORD your God. Then the LORD will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against you. 14 As for me, I am in your hands; do with me whatever - age 5
you think is good and right. 15 Be assured, however, that if you put me to death, you will bring the guilt of innocent blood on yourselves and on this city and on those who live in it, for in truth the LORD has sent me to you to speak all these words in your hearing. R This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gradual Hebrews 12:2 The gradual is a liturgical response that encapsulates the overarching theme of the season. R O come, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, R who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising its shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Epistle Reading hilippians 3:17 4:1 17 R Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of hrist. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus hrist, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body. Therefore, my brothers and sisters, you whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, dear friends! R This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Verse of the Day Luke 13:35 Behold, your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see Me until you say, Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Holy Gospel Luke 13:31 35 A The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the thirteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 31 A At that time some harisees came to Jesus and said to him, Leave this place and go somewhere else. Herod wants to kill you. 32 He replied, Go tell that fox, I will keep on driving out demons and healing people today and tomorrow, and on the third day I will reach my goal. 33 In any case, I must press on today and tomorrow and the next day for surely no prophet can die outside Jerusalem! - age 6
34 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 35 Look, your house is left to you desolate. I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. A This is the Gospel of the Lord. raise to You, O hrist. Apostles reed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus hrist, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy hristian hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Sermon Hymn hildren of the Heavenly Father LSB 725 Sermon Sermon Notes - (For reflection now or later) Know What? - What is this section of God s Word saying? So What? - Why do you think God included this in His word? What is he teaching us? - age 7
Now What? - Now what am I going to do with what I read/heard? How can I put it into practice? Sit Offering Stand rayers of St. Mark Let us pray together in hrist Jesus for all people according to their needs And so we say: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Triune God, You work together for the building up of Your people and for the eternal glory of Your name. Hear these prayers of our lips, along with the unspoken prayers of our hearts, that we place our confidence in Your eternal care and Your promise to always answer prayer. And so we say: Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! We pray in the name of Him who gathers us together and saves us by His grace Jesus hrist, our Lord. Amen. The Sacrament of Holy ommunion We celebrate the Lord s Supper at St. Mark Lutheran in the confidence that in this feast, our Lord gives us not only bread and wine, but His very body and blood. In ommunion, we receive forgiveness for our sins, a deeper relationship with hrist and with one another, and power to live a life that truly glorifies God. Our Lord invites to His feast those who believe this, repent of their sins, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love others as He forgives and loves us. Because the Bible tells us of the serious consequences of misusing the Lord s Supper (1 orinthians 11:17-34), we commune those who have been instructed in God s Word and who declare their faith in these truths. We welcome our guests and ask that you direct any questions in this regard to astor Gilson. For those not able to receive the wine, white grape juice is offered and is available in the middle of each communion tray. reface The opening dialogue between pastor and people that begins the liturgy of Holy ommunion. These words, dating from the second century, are likely the most ancient part of the Divine Service. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus hrist, our Lord, who - age 8
overcame the assaults of the devil and gave His life as a ransom for many that with cleansed hearts and minds we may be gathered into Your presence and joyfully celebrate at Your Table in sincerity and truth. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying: Sanctus A Latin word meaning "holy." It is drawn from the song of the angels in Is. 6:3. The concluding text, "blessed is He who comes " is from s. 118:26 and Mk. 11:9 10. Lord's rayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The Words of Our Lord The words of Jesus, spoken by the pastor over the bread and wine in the Service of the Sacrament, by which the body and blood of hrist are truly present, distributed, and received. - age 9
Our Lord Jesus hrist, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me. ax Domini Latin for eace of the Lord. The peace of the Lord be with you always. Amen. Agnus Dei Latin for "Lamb of God," this hymn in the communion liturgy draws on the words of John the Baptist who pointed his disciples to Jesus, the Lamb of God (Jn 1:29). In the context of the communion liturgy, we are praying to hrist who is there present in his body and blood to have mercy on us and grant us peace. 11 Nunc Dimittis Latin for "now dismiss." These are the words spoken by Simeon as he held the 40-day-old Jesus in his arms (Luke 2:25 35). ost ommunion ollect O God the Father, the fountain and source of all goodness, who in loving-kindness sent Your only-begotten Son into the flesh, we thank You that for His sake You have given us pardon and peace in this Sacrament, and we ask You not to forsake Your children but always to rule our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that we may see You for who You are and speak of You throughout the world hrist died to save; through the same Jesus hrist, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. - age 11
Benedicamus and Benediction Benedicamus is Latin for bless we the Lord. The Benediction is a blessing from the Lord, either the Aaronic Blessing from Numbers 6:24-26, or the Apostolic Blessing from 2 orinthians 13:14. There are many who say, Who will show us some good? Lift up the light of Your face upon us, O LORD! Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and T give you peace.
