2 Order of Matins November 10 & 11, 2018 Welcome and Greetings to Our Guests! If you re new here, we welcome you in the name of Jesus. We also sincerely hope that you will come and worship with us again! Following the 9:30 am worship service, members and guests are invited to come down to the Upper Room for a cup of coffee, juice, snacks, and a time of fellowship with one another. Please join us for Bible Study on the Gospel of John in the fellowship hall. As a reminder, please turn off or silence your cell phones during the service. As We Gather My Shepherd will supply my need. These simple words, which paraphrase the first verse of Psalm 23, remind us that our Lord knows what we need and provides for us. In these weeks of harvest time, we find joy in seeing how once again The earth has yielded its increase (Psalm 67:6). Although it may be easy to be thankful in the season of bountiful harvests, we are reminded in God s Word that we can be equally grateful in leaner times. Our gracious God consistently supplies our needs, leading us to affirm with the great hymn writer Paul Gerhardt: God is good; His love attends me Day by day, Come what may, Guides me and defends me (LSB 756:3). Confession and Absolution P As children of God who desire to be at peace with our Lord, with ourselves, and with all people, let us come with confidence before the throne of grace to confess our sins and to receive absolution. - Page 2 -

3 C Almighty God, who speaks peace to His people, Your salvation is near to all who fear You. We know well that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed. Grant us Your mercy, and spare us from the just punishment of our sin, which our Lord Jesus Christ has borne for us on the cross. Renew us by Your Holy Spirit that we may walk in the way of peace both now and forever. P God has promised to grant His forgiveness to all who repent of their sins and turn to Him for mercy. As a called and ordained servant of Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. God keep you in perfect peace, lead you in ways of faith and obedience, and bring you to live with Him forever, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. C Amen. 5 Salutation P The Lord be with you. C And also with you. Prayer of the Day P Almighty God, our heavenly Father, You graciously forgive our sins and lovingly supply all our needs. By the working of the Holy Spirit, direct our lives into ways of peace with good and generous hearts as we look to You for everything both material and spiritual. This we ask in the name of Jesus, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. First Reading 1 Kings 17: R Then the word of the LORD came to him: 9 Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food. 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink? 11 As she was going to get it, he called, And bring me, please, a piece of bread. 12 As surely as the LORD your God lives, she replied, I don t have any bread only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die. 13 Elijah said to her, Don t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land. 15 She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 16 For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. R O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading Hebrews 9: R For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made with human hands that was only a copy of the true one; he entered heaven itself, now to appear for us in God s presence. 25 Nor did he enter heaven to offer himself again and again, the way the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood that is not his own. 26 Otherwise Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But he has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of Himself. 27 Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take - Page 5 -

6 away the sins of many; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. R O Lord, have mercy on us. C Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel Mark 12:38-44 A The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the twelfth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. 38 A As he taught, Jesus said, Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, 39 and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets. 40 They devour widows houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely. 41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts. 42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a few cents. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything all she had to live on. A C This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. Catechetical Instruction The First Article P In the First Article of the Apostles Creed, we confess that God is our Creator and our Preserver. Not only does He graciously give us life, He also sees to it that we have all we need to support our body and life from year to year. We acknowledge His fatherly protection as we confess together: C P I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. What does this mean? C I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All - Page 6 -

7 this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.
