Together With Faith We an: onnect, Grow and Serve Seventh Sunday in Epiphany February 23 & 24, 2019 St. Mark utheran hurch 4475 Henry Street, Muskegon, MI * sml.muskegon@yahoo.com Divine Service, Setting Four February 23 & 24, 2019
Welcome and Greetings to Our Guests! If you re new here, we welcome you in the name of Jesus. We also sincerely hope that you will come and worship with us again! Following the 9:30 am worship service, members and guests are invited to come down to the Upper Room for a cup of coffee, juice, snacks, and a time of fellowship with one another. Please join us for Bible Study on the book of John in the fellowship hall. As a reminder, please turn off or silence your cell phones during the service. As We Gather In these Sundays after the Epiphany, we have observed many of the miracles of our ord, who came to save us in body and soul. We give thanks for His many gifts of life and health and daily bread, but especially for our new birth in Holy Baptism the forgiveness of our sins and the promise of eternal life. Today we are reminded that because we have received such great, generous, and life-giving blessings from God, we now are enabled to give and share the love of God with others who need God s blessings. Prelude Welcome Opening Hymn ord of Glory, You Have Bought Us SB 851 Invocation From the atin, "to call upon." It serves as a reminder of Baptism and may be accompanied by the sign of the cross. In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Opening sentences Psalm 37:4; 103:13 Delight yourself in the ORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. As a father shows compassion to his children, so the ORD shows compassion to those who fear Him. - Page 2
onfession and Absolution We confess our sins to God and receive God s forgiveness through the Pastor at the beginning of the service, so that we can worship God with a clean heart, and receive Jesus body and blood in a right way. As the patriarch Joseph received his brothers in spite of their sin because of God s gracious providence, so we are called this day to be renewed by the forgiveness of our sins. et us then confess our sins to God our gracious Father. Almighty God, we confess that we have sinned against You and against one another by our thoughts, words, and deeds, by what we have done and by what we have failed to do. We have not loved You with our whole heart. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. By Your grace revealed to us in Your Son, our ord Jesus hrist, grant us Your deliverance and forgiveness. Renew a right heart within us by Your love and mercy. Amen. Almighty God, merciful Father, in Holy Baptism You declared us to be Your children and gathered us into Your one, holy hurch, in which You daily and richly forgive us our sins and grant us new life through Your Spirit. Be in our midst, enliven our faith, and graciously receive our prayer and praise; through Your Son, Jesus hrist, Our ord. Amen. Kyrie From the Greek, it is a direct address to God, meaning "ord, have mercy." It is not part of the confession of sins but a cry to God to have mercy on us and all humanity. - Page 3
Gloria in Excelsis atin for Glory in the highest, this is the hymn of praise sung at the beginning of the Divine Service. It originates from the fourth century and has been in regular use for over a millennium. The canticle begins with the angel's song in uke 2:14 and then continues with a hymn of praise to the triune God, focusing chiefly on the saving work of Jesus, "the amb of God who takes away the sin of the world." Salutation and ollect of the Day From the atin salutatio, meaning "a greeting." A liturgical greeting by which the pastor blesses the people. A collect is a concisely written prayer that "collects" the prayers of the people. The collect usually follows a pattern of: address to God, basis for the prayer, petition, desired benefit or result, and Trinitarian closing. The ord be with you. And also with you. O ord, make us instruments of Your peace that we share with all other people the gift of Your love and forgiveness; through Jesus hrist, Your Son, our ord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. - Page 4
Psalm Psalm 103: Praise the ORD, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. 2 Praise the ORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, 5 who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle s. 6 The ORD works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: 8 The ORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. 9 He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; 10 he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the ORD has compassion on those who fear him; Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever, Amen. Old Testament Reading Genesis 45: R Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph! Is my father still living? But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence. 4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, ome close to me. When they had done so, he said, I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! 5 And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. 6 For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. 7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance. - Page 5
8 So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. 9 Now hurry back to my father and say to him, This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. ome down to me; don t delay. 10 You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. 11 I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute. 12 You can see for yourselves, and so can my brother Benjamin, that it is really I who am speaking to you. 13 Tell my father about all the honor accorded me in Egypt and about everything you have seen. And bring my father down here quickly. 14 Then he threw his arms around his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin embraced him, weeping. 15 And he kissed all his brothers and wept over them. Afterward his brothers talked with him. This is the Word of the ord. Thanks be to God. Epistle Reading 1 orinthians 15:21-26, R For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in hrist all will be made alive. 23 But each in turn: hrist, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him. 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 30 And as for us, why do we endanger ourselves every hour? 31 I face death every day yes, just as surely as I boast about you in hrist Jesus our ord. 32 If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, et us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die. 33 Do not be misled: Bad company corrupts good character. 34 ome back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of God I say this to your shame. 35 But someone will ask, How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come? 36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor. - Page 6
42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; This is the Word of the ord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse uke 5:10b Hebrew for "praise the ord" (though in its Greek spelling). It is a word of joy and gladness. Alleluia. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful. Alleluia. Holy Gospel uke 6:27-38 A The Holy Gospel according to St. uke, the sixth chapter. Glory to You, O ord. 27 A But to you who are listening I say: ove your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you. 32 If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. 37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. A This is the Gospel of the ord. Praise to You, O hrist. Apostles' reed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus hrist, His only Son, our ord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, - Page 7
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy hristian hurch, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen.
