The Cretion 1In the beginning God creted the hevens nd the erth. 2 Now the erth ws formless nd empty, drkness covered the surfce of the wtery depths, nd the Spirit of God ws hovering over the surfce of the wters. 3 Then God sid, Let there be light, nd there ws light. 4 God sw tht the light ws good, nd God seprted the light from the drkness. 5 God clled the light dy, nd He clled the drkintroduction 6 genesis introduction The key word to describe Genesis is beginnings. Here we see the beginning of cretion, the beginning of the humn rce, the beginning of sin nd the beginning of God s gret pln of redemption. Humn filure is everywhere met by divine grce. 7 7 GENESIS 1:30 plce, nd let the dry lnd pper. And it ws so. 10 God clled the dry lnd erth, nd He clled the gthering of the wter ses. And God sw tht it ws good. 11 Then God sid, Let the erth produce vegettion: seed-bering plnts, nd fruit trees on the erth bering fruit with seed in it, ccording to their kinds. And it ws so. 12 The erth brought forth vegettion: seed-bering plnts ccording to their kinds nd trees bering fruit with seed in it, ccording to their kinds. And God sw tht it ws good. 13 Evening cme, nd then morning: the third dy. 14 Then God sid, Let there be lights in the expnse of the sky to seprte the dy from the night. They will serve s signs for festivls nd for dys nd yers. 15 They will be lights in the expnse of the sky to provide light on the erth. And it ws so. 16 God mde the two gret lights the greter light to hve dominion over the dy nd the lesser light to hve dominion over the night s well s the strs. 17 God plced them in the expnse of the sky to provide light on the erth, 18 to dominte the dy nd the night, nd to seprte light from drkness. And God sw tht it ws good. 19 Evening cme, nd then morning: the fourth dy. 20 Then God sid, Let the wter swrm with living cretures, nd let birds fly bove the erth cross the expnse of the sky. 21 So God creted the lrge se-cretures b nd every living creture tht moves nd swrms in the wter, ccording to their kinds. [He lso creted] every winged bird ccording to its kind. And God sw tht it ws good. 22 So God blessed them, Be fruitful, multiply, nd fill the wters of the ses, nd let the birds multiply on the erth. 23 Evening cme, nd then morning: the fifth dy. 24 Then God sid, Let the erth produce living cretures ccording to their kinds: livestock, cretures tht crwl, nd the wildlife of the erth ccording to their kinds. And it ws so. 25 So God mde the wildlife of the erth ccording to their kinds, the livestock ccording to their kinds, nd cretures tht crwl on the ground ccording to their kinds. And God sw tht it ws good. 26 Then God sid, Let Us mke mn in Our imge, ccording to Our likeness. They will rule the fish of the se, the birds of the sky, the livestock, ll the erth, c nd the cretures tht crwl d on the erth. 27 So God creted mn in His own imge; He creted him in the imge of God; He creted them mle nd femle. 28 God blessed them, nd God sid to them, Be fruitful, multiply, fill the erth, nd subdue it. Rule the fish of the se, the birds of the sky, nd every creture tht crwls e on the erth. 29 God lso sid, Look, I hve given you every seed-bering plnt on the surfce of the entire erth, nd every tree whose fruit contins seed. And it ws so. 31 God sw ll tht He hd mde, nd it ws very good. Evening cme, nd then morning: the sixth dy. 2So the hevens nd the erth nd every thing in them were completed. 2 By the seventh b dy, God completed His work tht He hd done, nd He rested c on the seventh dy from ll His work tht He hd done. 3 God blessed the seventh dy nd declred it holy, for on it He rested from His work of cretion. d Mn nd Womn in the Grden 4 These re the records of the hevens nd the erth, concerning their cretion t the time e tht the LORD God mde the erth nd the hevens. 5 No shrub of the field hd yet [grown] on the lnd, f nd no plnt of the field hd yet sprouted, for the LORD God hd not mde it rin on the lnd, nd there ws no mn to work the ground. 6 But wter would come out of the ground nd wter the entire surfce of the lnd. 7 Then the LORD God formed the mn out of the dust from the ground nd brethed the breth of life into his nostrils, nd the mn becme living being. 8 The LORD God plnted grden in Eden, in the est, nd there He plced the mn He hd formed. 9 The LORD God cused to grow out of the ground every tree plesing in ppernce nd good for food, including the tree of life in the midst of the grden, s well s the tree of the knowledge of good nd evil A river went g out from Eden to wter the grden. From there it divided nd becme the source of four rivers. h 11 The nme of the first is Pishon, which encircles the entire lnd of the Hvilh, where there is gold. 12 Gold from tht lnd is pure; i bdellium j nd onyx k re lso there. 13 The nme of the second river is Gihon, which encircles the entire lnd of Cush. 14 The nme of the third river is the Tigris, which flows to the est of Assyri. And the fourth river is the Euphrtes. 15 The LORD God took the mn nd plced him in the grden of Eden to work it nd wtch over it. 16 And the LORD God commnded the mn, You re free to et from ny tree of the grden, 17 but you must not et l from the tree of the knowledge of good nd evil, for on the dy you et from it, you will certinly die. 18 Then the LORD God sid, It is not good for the mn to be lone. I will mke helper who is like him. 19 So the LORD God formed out of the ground ech wild niml nd ech bird of the sky, nd brought ech to the mn to see wht he would cll it. And whtever the mn clled living creture, tht ws its nme. 20 The mn gve nmes to ll the livestock, to the birds of the sky, nd to every wild niml; but for the mn m no helper ws found who ws like him. 21 So the LORD God cused deep sleep to come over the mn, nd he slept. God took one of his ribs nd closed the flesh t tht plce. 22 Then the LORD God mde the rib He hd tken from the mn into womn nd brought her to the mn. 2:1 Lit nd ll their host b 2:2 Sm, LXX, Syr red sixth c 2:2 Or cesed d 2:3 Lit work tht God creted to mke e 2:4 Lit cretion on the dy f 2:5 Or erth g 2:10 Or goes h 2:10 Lit becme four heds i 2:12 Lit good j 2:12 A yellowish, trnsprent gum resin k 2:12 Identity of this precious stone uncertin l 2:17 Lit et from it m 2:20 Or for Adm

9 GENESIS 3:8 Elohim A nme, when used in the Bible, is not merely designtion; it is definition. The nmes of God revel chrcteristics bout Him which, when we reflect on them, should hve bering on our own lives nd chrcter. As we meditte on God s gretness, His grce nd His love, then every problem we hve flls into its proper plce. I cn tell you from experience tht mjor problems seem exceedingly insignificnt when mesured ginst the gretness of n omnipotent God. In the opening verse of Genesis: In the beginning God creted the hevens nd the erth, the Hebrew nme for God here is Elohim nd points to the One who possesses ll the divine powers. As the Cretor (Elohim) bends down to tke the dust of His cretion nd mke out of it living brething mn, He introduces Himself by new nme the Lord God or, in the Hebrew, Jehovh Elohim. Often, when God introduces gret chnge in history, He nnounces Himself under new nme. Here God s personl nme is dded to the nme of Elohim s if He wnts to soften its solemn title nd show Himself not only s God who cn build mountins nd crete vst ses, but One lso who enters into personl reltionship with His humn cretion. As Elohim, God is mighty Cretor but, s Jehovh Elohim, He is lso the tender nd loving Lord. nmes of god 23 And the mn sid: This one, t lst, is bone of my bone, nd flesh of my flesh; this one will be clled womn, for she ws tken from mn. 24 This is why mn leves his fther nd mother nd bonds with his wife, nd they become one flesh. 25 Both the mn nd his wife were nked, yet felt no shme. The Tempttion nd the Fll 3Now the serpent ws the most cunning of ll the wild nimls tht the LORD God hd mde. He sid to the womn, Did God relly sy, You cn t et from ny tree in the grden? 2 The womn sid to the serpent, We my et the fruit from the trees in the grden. 3 But bout the fruit of the tree in the middle of the grden, God sid, You must not et it or touch it, or you will die. 4 No! You will not die, the serpent sid to the womn. 5 In fct, God knows tht when you et it your eyes will be opened nd you will be like God, b knowing good nd evil. 6 Then the womn sw tht the tree ws good for food nd delightful to look t, nd tht it ws desirble for obtining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit nd te [it]; she lso gve [some] to her husbnd, [who ws] with her, nd he te [it]. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, nd they knew they were nked; so they sewed fig leves together nd mde loincloths for themselves. 10 GENESIS 3:9 the sound of the LORD God wlking in the grden t the time of the evening breeze, nd they hid themselves from the LORD God mong the trees of the grden. 9 So the LORD God clled out to the mn nd sid to him, Where re you? 10 And he sid, I herd You b in the grden, nd I ws frid becuse I ws nked, so I hid. 11 Then He sked, Who told you tht you were nked? Did you et from the tree tht I hd commnded you not to et from? 12 Then the mn replied, The womn You gve to be with me she gve me [some fruit] from the tree, nd I te. 13 So the LORD God sked the womn, Wht is this you hve done? And the womn sid, It ws the serpent. He deceived me, nd I te. 14 Then the LORD God sid to the serpent: Becuse you hve done this, you re cursed more thn ny livestock nd more thn ny wild niml. You will move on your belly nd et dust ll the dys of your life. 15 I will put hostility between you nd the womn, nd between your seed nd her seed. He will strike your hed, nd you will strike his heel. 16 He sid to the womn: I will intensify your lbor pins; you will ber children in nguish. Your desire will be for your husbnd, yet he will dominte you And He sid to Adm, Becuse you listened to your wife s voice nd te from the tree bout which I commnded you, Do not et from it : The ground is cursed becuse of you. You will et from it by mens of pinful lbor c ll the dys of your life. 18 It will produce thorns nd thistles for you, nd you will et the plnts of the field. 19 You will et bred d by the swet of your brow until you return to the ground, since you were tken from it. For you re dust, nd you will return to dust. 20 Adm nmed his wife Eve e becuse she ws the mother of ll the living. 21 The LORD God mde clothing out of skins for Adm nd his wife, nd He clothed them. 22 The LORD God sid, Since mn hs become like one of Us, knowing good nd evil, he must not rech out, nd lso tke from the tree of life, nd et, nd live forever. 23 So the LORD God sent him wy from the grden of Eden to work the ground from which he ws tken. 24 He drove mn out, nd est of the grden of Eden He sttioned cherubim with flming, whirling sword to gurd the wy to the tree of life. 3:8 Lit t the wind of the dy b 3:10 Lit the sound of You c 3:17 Lit it through pin d 3:19 Or food e 3:20 Lit Living, or Life

11 GENESIS 4:16 Devotion / Genesis 3 The picture mny of us hold in our minds of the Grden of Eden is of n idyllic prdise of innocence nd perfection. And of course in sense it ws. But relly it ws testing ground. There ws innocence but it ws untested, there ws perfection but it ws incomplete. When God creted spce for His humn beings to occupy there ws the potentil to wlk with Him or wlk wy from Him, to run to Him or from Him. The first humn pir needed divine reveltion, but they did not know or need to know everything; they were required to live by trust trust in God s Word. They filed to do tht nd, of course, entered into sin. God s questions must not be regrded s ccustions but s the loving entreties of Fther. The worst thing bout sin is not tht it violtes God s lw but tht it breks His hert. Remember tht when you re next tempted to sin. Every Dy with Jesus / Selwyn Hughes Cin Murders Abel 4Adm knew his wife Eve intimtely, nd she conceived nd gve birth to Cin. She sid, I hve hd mle child with the LORD s help. 2 Then she lso gve birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel becme shepherd of flock, but Cin cultivted the lnd. 3 In the course of time Cin presented some of the lnd s produce s n offering to the LORD. 4 And Abel lso presented [n offering] some of the firstborn of his flock nd their ft portions. The LORD hd regrd for Abel nd his offering, 5 but He did not hve regrd for Cin nd his offering. Cin ws furious, nd he ws downcst. b 6 Then the LORD sid to Cin, Why re you furious? And why re you downcst? c 7 If you do right, won t you be ccepted? But if you do not do right, sin is crouching t the door. Its desire is for you, but you must mster it. 8 Cin sid to his brother Abel, Let s go out to the field. d And while they were in the field, Cin ttcked his brother Abel nd killed him. 9 Then the LORD sid to Cin, Where is your brother Abel? I don t know, he replied. Am I my brother s gurdin? 10 Then He sid, Wht hve you done? Your brother s blood cries out to Me from the ground! 11 So now you re cursed [with liention] from the ground tht opened its mouth to receive your brother s blood you hve shed. e 12 If you work the lnd, it will never gin give you its yield. You will be restless wnderer on the erth. 13 But Cin nswered the LORD, My punishment f is too gret to ber! 14 Since You re bnishing me tody from the soil, nd I must hide myself from Your presence nd become restless wnderer on the erth, whoever finds me will kill me. 15 Then the LORD replied to him, In tht cse, g whoever kills Cin will suffer vengence seven times over. h And He plced mrk on Cin so tht whoever found him would not kill him. 16 Then Cin went out from the 4:1 Lit the Lord b 4:5 Lit nd his fce fell c 4:6 Lit why hs your fce fllen d 4:8 Sm, LXX, Syr, Vg; MT omits Let s go out to the field e 4:11 Lit blood from your hnd f 4:13 Or sin g 4:15 LXX, Syr, Vg red Not so! h 4:15 Or suffer severely

GENESIS 4:17 12 Adm It is suggested tht Adm ws nmed fter the dust of the ground from which he ws formed, s illustrted in Genesis 2:7. This thought is continued in Genesis 3:19, which revels tht we were mde of dust nd when we die it is to dust we will return. Yet there is something preciously different bout humnkind, becuse when God formed Adm He brethed life into him in wy tht did not hppen with the rest of cretion. In fct the literl trnsltion of Genesis 2:7 is tht God brethed the breth of lives (plurl) into mn. Adm did not just hve physicl life but he lso possessed soul nd spirit-life tht could commune with God who is Spirit (John 4:24). When Adm sinned it ws his spirit tht ws dedened, nd it is tht ded spirit tht hs been pssed on to the rest of the humn rce like fulty gene. Tht is why Jesus sid tht we needed spiritul birth in ddition to our physicl birth (John 3:3 8). Just s the first Adm ws the progenitor of the sinful humn rce, Jesus, the second Adm, is the One who gives life to new people of righteousness (Rom. 5:12 21). Adm ws chosen by God to be His imge-berer nd represent Him on erth. Where he filed, we hve been chosen s prt of the Church of Jesus Christ to be mbssdors to work for God s kingdom to come on erth s it is in heven. Above ll, we re not just dust of the ground; we hve been born gin by the precious Word of God nd given eternl life, such tht when our physicl body dies our spirit is relesed into Prdise with Christ. chrcter profile LORD s presence nd lived in the lnd of Nod, est of Eden. The Line of Cin 17 Cin knew his wife intimtely, nd she conceived nd gve birth to Enoch. Then Cin becme the builder of city, nd he nmed the city Enoch fter his son. 18 Ird ws born to Enoch, Ird fthered Mehujel, Mehujel fthered Methushel, nd Methushel fthered Lmech. 19 Lmech took two wives for himself, one nmed Adh nd the other nmed Zillh. 20 Adh bore Jbl; he ws the fther of the nomdic herdsmen. 21 His brother ws nmed Jubl; he ws the fther of ll who ply the lyre nd the flute. 22 Zillh bore Tubl-cin, who mde ll kinds of bronze nd iron tools. Tubl-cin s sister ws Nmh. 23 Lmech sid to his wives: Adh nd Zillh, her my voice; wives of Lmech, py ttention to my words. For I killed mn for wounding me, boy for striking me. 24 If Cin is to be venged seven times over, then for Lmech it will be seventy-seven times! 25 Adm knew his wife intimtely gin, nd she gve birth to son nd nmed him Seth, for [she sid,] God hs given b me nother child in plce of Abel, since Cin killed him. 26 A son ws born to Seth lso, nd he nmed 4:20 Lit the dweller of tent nd livestock b 4:25 The Hb word trnslted given sounds like the nme Seth.

15 GENESIS 7:15 noh One of the most difficult issues we fce in our lives is the courge to be different nd not conform to the crowd. Genesis 6:11 12 records how the people on erth t tht time were totlly corrupt nd violent: their thoughts were only of evil. Noh stood out s shining becon through his lifestyle s the one exception of righteousness. He refused to join in with the wickedness of those round him. God chose Noh to be the sviour of world tht ws destined for judgment; nd through his work nd witness remnnt ws sved to repopulte new erth. He ws, ccording to 2 Peter 2:5, precher of righteousness. In this respect he is gret exmple to us, for our holy lifestyle nd ferless witness is to be light in the drkness to those round us (Mtt. 5:14 16; Eph. 5:8). Noh is lso type of Christ. In other words, his life story in some wy reflects the life nd ministry of Jesus. Noh prepred wy to escpe the impending judgment of God for those who would believe nd follow him. The rk itself ws coted with pitch s protective covering (Gen. 6:14). The Hebrew word for pitch is kphr nd is trnslted elsewhere in the Old Testment s tonement. It usully refers to the process where sinful person is reconciled to God nd protected or sved from judgment. In the New Testment it is becuse of Jesus Christ, our rk of protection nd tonement (1 Pet. 3:20 21), tht we re reconciled to God (Rom. 5:11) nd re sved from judgment (John 3:36). The story of Noh s drunkenness only serves to prove tht God is not looking for perfect people, but for those who, despite their humn imperfections, hve set their herts to follow nd obey Him to the best of their bilities. chrcter profile fce of the whole erth. 4 Seven dys from now I will mke it rin on the erth 40 dys nd 40 nights, nd I will wipe off the fce of the erth every living thing I hve mde. 5 And Noh did everything tht the LORD commnded him. 6 Noh ws 600 yers old when the deluge cme [nd] wter covered the erth. 7 So Noh, his sons, his wife, nd his sons wives entered the rk becuse of the wters of the deluge. 8 From the clen nimls, unclen nimls, birds, nd every creture tht crwls on the ground, 9 two of ech, mle nd femle, entered the rk with Noh, just s God hd commnded him. 10 Seven dys lter the wters of the deluge cme on the erth. Only Noh ws left, nd those tht were with him in the rk. 24 And the wters surged on the erth 150 dys. The Flood Recedes 8God remembered Noh, s well s ll the wildlife nd ll the livestock tht were with him in the rk. God cused wind c to pss over the erth, nd the wter begn to subside. 2 The sources of the wtery depths nd the floodgtes of the sky were closed, nd the rin from the sky stopped. 3 The wter stedily receded from the erth, nd by the end of dys the wters hd decresed significntly. 4 The rk cme to rest in the seventh month, on the seventeenth dy of the month, on the mountins of Arrt. d 5 The wters continued to recede until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first dy of the month, the tops of the mountins were visible. 6 After 40 dys Noh opened the window of the rk tht he hd mde, 7 nd he sent out rven. It went bck nd forth until the wters hd dried up from the erth. 8 Then he sent out dove to see whether the wter on the erth s surfce hd gone down, 9 but the dove found no resting plce for her foot. She returned to him in the rk becuse wter covered the surfce of the whole erth. He reched out nd brought her into the rk to himself. 10 So Noh wited seven more dys nd sent out the dove from the rk gin. 11 When the dove cme to him t evening, there ws plucked olive lef in her bek. The first is found fter the btement of the Flood, speking of God s mercy; the second is in Reveltion 4:3 surrounding the throne. A rinbow is the blending of heven nd erth. In Christ, heven s mercy reched down to erth s sin, robbed it of its power to hold men nd women, nd gve every soiled sinner the promise of eternl forgiveness nd redemption through fith in Him. A rinbow sys, in effect, The storm is over... now the sun is bout to brek through. So look gin t the hevenly throne. The storm of sin is over.
