Stewardship 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time And the Lord changed his mind.(exodus 32:14). Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them because he is the Son of God, God, who changed his mind. Is your mind made up? Is your mind made up about the homeless in our city? the addicts? The prostitutes? Is your mind made up about those more conservative than you, those more liberal? Is your mind made up about your colleagues, your sisters and brothers in the church, or the family members with whom you have disagreed? And the Lord changed his mind. What about you? Ministry Sign-up Sunday Ministry Sign-up Sunday is just around the corner and it is time to begin discerning which ministries we will participate in during the coming ministry year ( ). 5 take five minutes to feed your faith every day Remove this page from the bulletin and put it where you ll see it each day. Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2013 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Go fly a kite! In a series of interviews published in 2010, the future Pope Francis describes how he learned the art of kite-flying: There d come the moment when the kite would begin making a figure 8 and start falling.... The kids who knew more than us would scream, Give it some slack; it s wobbling! For Francis, the technique of easing up to keep things aloft applies to parenting and pastoral leadership as well: Sometimes you need to give [people who are wavering] some slack... We have to be able to set limits at the right moment, but other times we need to know how to look the other way and be like the father in the parable of the Prodigal Son. TODAY S READINGS: Exodus 32:7-11, 13-14; 1 Timothy 1:12-17; Luke 15:1-32 or 15:1-10 (132) While he was still a long way off, his father caught sight of him, and was filled with compassion. MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 16 MEMORIAL OF CYPRIAN, BISHOP, MARTYR Act on your prayers Prayer comes in many forms. We re familiar with petitionary or intercessory prayer from the General Intercessions at Mass. Asking God for something, though, doesn t involve only God acting to answer the prayer. You, the asker, have to do something, too. Saint Cyprian, the third-century bishop of Carthage in North Africa, once wrote to his flock: Petition is ineffectual when it is a barren entreaty that implores God. For as every tree that bears no fruit is cut down and cast into the fire, so also assuredly words that do not bear fruit cannot deserve anything of God because they are not fruitful in any good action. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Timothy 2:1-8; Luke 7:1-10 (443) I ask that supplications, prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings be offered for everyone. TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 17 MEMORIAL OF ROBERT BELLARMINE, BISHOP, DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH Make the grade By mid-september the back-to-school hype is past. We are back to business, with the last rays of summer waning. Some subjects, however, never go out of season. Today s saint, Robert Bellarmine, reminds us: The school of Christ is the school of love. In the last day, when the general examination takes place... love will be the whole syllabus. Love is at the center of everything God is and does, and your daily assignment is to live this love in word and deed. Find one person who needs help with this homework. Love them unconditionally and help them go to the head of the class. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Luke 7:11-17 (444) When the Lord saw her, he was moved with pity for her and said to her, Do not weep. WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 Hear some words for the wise When the wisdom of God comes calling at your door, it s always a good idea to receive her and, oh yes, Hebrew scripture compares holy wisdom to a woman. The smart person allows wisdom to enter their life because she comes from God, has always been with God, and embodies God s creative power and teaching (Torah), three pretty important things. Saint Paul called Christ the wisdom of God, as have Christian saints and scholars ever since. When we speak about wisdom, we are speaking of Christ, said Saint Ambrose, the fourth-century bishop of Milan. How can you welcome wisdom today? TODAY S READINGS: 1 Timothy 3:14-16; Luke 7:31-35 (445) Wisdom is vindicated by all her children. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 MEMORIAL OF JANUARIUS, BISHOP, MARTYR How has your faith saved you? The stories of early Christian saints are often larger-than-life. So it is with Saint Januarius (third century). According to legend, Januarius was thrown into a fiery furnace by the Romans during a time of intolerance toward Christians. To everyone s amazement he emerged unscathed. Taken figuratively, the story says a lot about how faith can help us in the face of intolerance when it comes to things like race, gender, immigration status, and so on: We may be subject to the fiery furnace of prejudice, but our faith can save us. It can remind us that we are all the beloved of God and it can move us to action for a more just world. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Timothy 4:12-16; Luke 7:36-50 (446) Your faith has saved you; go in peace. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 MEMORIAL OF ANDREW KIM TAE-GŎN, PRIEST, MARTYR, AND PAUL CHŎNG HA-SANG, MARTYR AND THEIR COMPANIONS, MARTYRS Stretch out your arms Being an example of faith to others means extending the branches of your life outward. Extend a branch a little further today and say a silent prayer for someone in your life who is struggling. The martyrs Saints Andrew Kim Tae-gŏn, Paul Chŏng Hasang, and their companions were part of a church in Korea that began entirely with laypeople. In difficult times of persecution they were buoyed by others in their faith. Do not doubt the power of a lived faith that extends beyond your arms and into others hearts. TODAY S READINGS: 1 Timothy 6:2c-12; Luke 8:1-3 (447) Lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called when you made the noble confession in the presence of many witnesses. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21 FEAST OF MATTHEW, APOSTLE, EVANGELIST Pay attention to this tax man Before being called by Jesus, Matthew collected taxes from the Jewish people on behalf of the Roman occupiers. As you might imagine, such people who often feathered their own nests quite nicely from the taxes they collected were looked down upon by their fellow Jews as collaborators and agents of a foreign occupier. But we honor Matthew not for his past but for his immediate and unequivocal response to the call from Jesus; he got up from his desk and followed, no questions asked. Would you be ready to give up a cushy job for the sake of Jesus? Pay attention: The call could come at any time! TODAY S READINGS: Ephesians 4:1-7, 11-13; Matthew 9:9-13 (643) I did not come to call the righteous but sinners by TrueQuest Communications, L.L.C.
