PASTOR S CORNER Proverbs have a way of stating a concept that can become a kind of mantra for explaining the way things are. Sayings like, "Mighty oaks from little acorns grow," or "The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," or "It's the squeaky wheel that gets the grease," are all meant to encapsulate a larger concept in a brief sentence. For the most part, the person hearing the phrase immediately understands to what the speaker is referring. And so the saying, "He can't see the forest for the trees," is often understood as describing someone who cannot comprehend the larger implications of things because all he can see is the minute details on which he is focused. In the Gospel this weekend Jesus tells a parable about a rich man who was seemingly oblivious to both the forest and the trees. In the story the rich man seems unconcerned with anything but his own pleasure. He dresses in fine linen. He eats great meals. It seems like he has it all. The "forest" of communal interaction seems beyond his imagination. At the same time, from what we are told, the rich man also seems not to have taken any notice of the beggar at his door. He was not even aware of the "trees" of someone right at his gate. In our lives as Christians, both the forest and the trees are important. We can't lose sight of either of them. As people in the world we must continue to be involved in working for a more just society through our advocacy and political activity. We have to promote the causes of life, human dignity, peace, and the common good. That's the big picture, the forest, that we see. At the same time through our works of charity and simple outreach we touch the lives of the poor, the sick, the lonely, and the dying in our very midst. They are the trees right in front of us, and we cannot miss them either.

7 A TESTIMONY FROM A SSVP MEMBER OF THE SOCIETY OF STAINT VINCENT de PAUL The society of St Vincent de Paul is lay Catholic organization whose mission is to live the Gospel message by serving Christ in people in need with love, justice and joy. As a result the Society s mission expects that Vincentians to: See Christ in anyone who suffers; Come together as family; Have personal contact with people in need; Help in all possible ways. The St Patrick s Conference of the society has existed for about twenty-five years. So what do we do? 1. We assist friends and neighbours in need with food, financial help, housing, furniture and household goods, transportation and other needs. a. Most of the times we deliver food hampers to those that make the request. However depending on the request it may be as simple as adding bus tickets to the package to assist this person in their transportation requirement as they start their new job. In other cases it may be to help someone with his or her utility bill or their rent. Sometimes the issues are short term as we help a family through a crisis but other times it can be a very long time. This is where the experience of our more senior members and with the help of the Holy Spirit we discern who obtains the help they request. 2. We liaise with agencies in a better position to assist. a. Some of our friends just don t know where to start. They have so many problems that it is very easy for them to go into overwhelm. As a result I ve seen our more senior members visit these people, work with them and help them establish a contact with social agencies that are in existence. Now why can I not do this work as an individual? I probably can but it would take many years of building relationships and trust. But this is the beauty of St Vincent de Paul society. Someone has done this activity before and those relationships are already built and they are quite effective in liaising with those agencies. b. As a second point you will note that our Conference is in a relatively affluent part of Calgary. There are other parts of the city where people are not so fortunate and certain St Vincent de Paul Conferences are stretched to the limit and they need help. They have a greater need for money, food and volunteers. In this case Saint Patrick s Conference is connected to other Conferences through the South Calgary Council, which in turn is connect to the Calgary Central. For example through the coordination by the Society we are also assisting the Holy Trinity Conference in helping other Calgarians in a meaningful and organized way.

8 1. We obtain resources through the Parish Donation Boxes, begging activities, and donations from our parishioners, parish groups and others in our community such as our schools. a. I can safely say that 99% of your donation is used to help the poor. There is no money spent on advertising. b. Secondly I would like to point out that this organization is a lay organization and there are some conferences that do operate outside the Catholic parish. St. Patrick s conference alone helps in the order of 400 to 500 hundred families a year. Now those resources have to come from somewhere. A lot of the food is collected through the schools, and the bin at the front of the church. As a result someone needs to pick these donations up, sort through the donations and place them on the shelves in the pantry. c. On the third Sunday of the every month the Saint Vincent de Paul banner is at the front and we have members with a basket in hand standing at the door hoping to collect. Let me say these donations plus the ones through the drop boxes are extremely helpful. This cash provides St Patrick s Conference with the flexibility to, as we would say, top up the pantry or to provide some food voucher so that the mother can buy milk for her children. I say mother because at least 50% of our clients that are below the poverty line are single moms. 2. We rely on the time and talent of its members. We are all volunteers. a. As the saying goes, many hands make to work light. We have volunteers doing the following: i. Answering the phone ii. Picking up food donations iii. Stocking shelves iv. Delivering food v. Liaise with agencies. vi. Collecting funds at the Church vii. Provide a support group for other Vincentians to do their work When we help individuals we put on our best smile, befriend them and do our best to make the service provided a positive experience for them. Now for some Vincentians approaching individuals is easier to do than for others but you learn as you go and get better as you practice. Most of all we do not judge the people we serve. Jesus calls us to help the poor and I find that Saint Vincent de Paul Society is an excellent avenue to make a difference. So we would appreciate your assistance and if time dictates that it only be at Christmas time then we will gladly accept your help. But if you feel that inner urge to volunteer throughout the year in whatever capacity in order to make a difference then we have an opportunity for you. Who knows you may even find it very rewarding and fulfilling.
