Greetings! We are really enjoying Vanishing Grace in the Sunday Adult Class. Don t get me wrong, we are not enjoying God s grace vanishing, but we are captivated by author Philip Yancy s book and DVD series by that title. His point is that, in our post-christian culture, we of the evangelical (ie:good news) faith are coming across as anything but agents of grace. We are seen as against everything, narrow minded, judgmental, and ignorant. Obviously, these are stereotypes by people on the outside and are not wholly true. However, there are people claiming Christ who give angry responses, name calling, and condemnations to those who are different and indifferent to the cause of the Kingdom of God. Yancy then shares examples of Christians who act and respond with grace to people who are as enemies. In week #2 Dr. Francis Collins and Pastor Ken Smith are sterling examples of a faith that leads with grace towards the doubters and detractors. We were all very inspired to do the same. And that is what happened to me the next day. I had just completed the memorial service and luncheon at church of Mr. Haggerty, when this man along with his child and elderly mother came to the church door. Instead of dispatching him with a pittance, I thought of Collins and Smith. I gave him the next two hours and some significant help so that he might have hope and strength to meet the challenges of all his responsibilities. I kind of do this anyway, but from the book and DVD I was furthered motivated to BE the Lord s Grace Ambassador to this man. I assume we will meet again. The Christian film, War Room, has shown at Fair Oaks Theatre in town for four weeks. The strength of this movie was the grace of God experienced by an older woman, who in turn shared that strength of Christ through her prayer life with others. In the eyes of the secular world it received a 1 ticket and was pretty much panned by the film reviewers. Those of us inside the faith appreciated the film as it spoke our language. However, this did not speak grace to the post-christian culture. In fact, it reinforced their stereotypes of us as religious fanatics. I believe this movie was made for Christians, so it was not meant to speak broadly to the non-believers. Yancy s focus is nuanced with ways to engage the culture and connect with human needs and feelings that will lead to the Lord and His message. This is more subtle;1 it is friendship type evangelism. It is like the difference between a purring cat and roaring lion. In the end, both approaches can be used by God for good. The message and concern of Philip Yancy is very real and timely. Culture is turning and Christians are being bent. How do we speak up for the unborn, the poor, the very sick and dying, the elderly, the family-less child, the immigrant, the refugee, the middle class, the traditional family, the untraditional family, the homeless? How can we do this as a congregation and be known as a church that cares, that protects, and helps? This is the horizon of ministry for us as God s Ambassadors and church. In His Grip, Pastor Randy 2

Dearest Saint John s Family, Thank you once again for your prayers. We are excited to tell you that we have been blessed with several good candidates. We have completed our first round of get to know you phone calls. These calls were made more meaningful through the wonders of technology. We were able to connect via Skype and it made it seem we were actually sitting at the table with each pastor. We have reviewed the strengths and weakness of each of the candidates, and have created a short list of those we want to interview in-depth. We will create general questions to ask all the pastors and also specific questions for each one based on their first conversation. We pray that we will be able to schedule this second round in a timely fashion but scheduling ten people (nine of us and a pastor) across various time zones will be challenging. We must remember the call process is about revealing of God s will, not completing the process as quickly as possible. Please continue to pray for the committee and the candidates that all may discern God s plan for their futures. In Christ, The Call Committee 4

We surround Priscilla Thomas as her mother, Dorothy, gently passed to the Lord on August 31 in Concord, CA at a care facility for dementia patients. Though separated by distance, the two were close in love. Priscilla also asks for prayers for her siblings Phyllis and Alan that they may be comforted by the Lord s provisions and promises. Congratulations to the recent birth of grandchild, shared by members Neita OATES (her son Adam is married to Sarah (Fibich) and Terry Fibich. Proud great grandfather, is our member Clarence Fibich. We lift up to the Lord our sister in Christ De Hitchcock, who gently died last month in Ventura. We will gather with De s family on Thursday, Oct. for a Memorial Service and Resurrection Garden Columbarium inurnment, followed by reception in the Commons. All are invited to attend. We rejoice in the Sept. 19 wedding at Lutheran Church of the Palisades in L.A. and marriage of Rob Mees and Michelle Standley. Rob s father, Walter, Pastor at this church Rob has grown up in, officiated. Michelle s family from Arkansas were all present for this celebration event. Rob serves as our Director for Youth Ministries / Media Center Tech and Michelle is our Nursery Attendant. To My Saint John's Church Family: Many thanks to all who were able to come to my Celebration Piano Recital. Your presence helped to make it a joyful experience for me. I definitely felt the presence of the Lord throughout the recital. Everyone was so kind: The beautiful cards, a few gifts, encouragement, prayers, along with all of the wonderful helpers: Pastor Randy and Patty, Cheryl, Pam, Jan, Kay, Mark, Rob, Myron, Shari, Bob, Rena, Irene, Sandra, Jeannie, Roger, and Joan. It was a special day I will always treasure. Love & Blessings, Louise Frye Russ was recently honored with a Medal of Honor from France, in recognition of his service with the Allies in World War 11. He flew 25 bombing missions over Germany and France as a Navigator in a B-17. Excerpts from the accompanying letter say "You have been appointed Chevalier (Knight) of the National Order of the Legion of Honor" (Created by Napoleon (1802) "This award is a sign of France's infinite gratitude and appreciation for your personal contribution to the Allies decisive role in the liberation of our country during World War!!" Russ felt honored, and proud and we wanted to share it with you. It was definitely an "upper", as are the welcome continuing prayers. Love, Betty and Russ 6

Dear Saint John s Church. My Name is Collins and I am in First (P.1) grade. The name of my school is Solid Rock Christian School and my home town is Arua. Some of my favorite things to do on the weekends include reading books, playing with my friends and going for prayers on Sunday. Some things I am learning in school are reading letters of alphabet, counting numbers and speaking English. If I could visit anywhere in the world, I would go to America because I would fly with an airplane and see my sponsors. I would also see rivers, mountains when I reach there. Thanks. 12 GLOBAL MISSIONS MINISTRY (we are the Senders and they are the Goers) Greetings All You Eaglets From Your Global Missions Ministry Want to know the committee s biggest secret??? Our Annual Global Missions Festival Sunday is Sunday, October 11th One 10:00 am Combined Worship followed by Light finger snacks (no Cal, we re not eating fingers) in the Fellowship Hall. Then Our Guests will share Slides, Stories of the Lord working in the lives of the children, youth and adults, and your Questions and Discussion. We re a little late on the draw getting the word out for this year s Festival, and as the Chairman of the Committee, I apologize. This year we again emphasize China Service Ventures which is now known as Mei Wen in China. Mei Wen is the name of the business that was formed as response to pressure applied to China Service Ventures by the Chinese Government. We are Blessed again to have Pastor Jeff & Mim Nellermoe, Missionaries with China Service Ventures here with us for this occasion. And again they will preach and share with us the richness of GOD S Provisions in this great mission field. Along with Jeff and Mim, we are pleased and honored to have from China for the first time in the USA Nancy, the local Principal Administrator for Mei Wen, and Yang Guang, her Mei Wen Associate. Both Nancy and Yang Guang speak some English and will share with us during The Mission Festival. Kathy and Joann Lindstaedt as well as Rebecca and Whitney Davis, last summer s goers ; will be on hand to speak to us senders. Please plan to celebrate this Great Global Outreach From This Great Local Congregation. Remember 10:00 AM Combined Worship (with Children s Sunday School at 10:10 AM after Children s Message). GODSPEED Jeff Metcalfe, Chairman, Global Missions Ministry 12

Our Stephen Ministers visit on a regular, mostly weekly, basis with their Care Receivers and develop a close and strong relationship that is Christ motivated and centered. Therefore, as Pastor I am very glad to have our lay Care Givers also bring the Sacrament of Holy Communion to our people if they are house bound. Before sending them out with a home Communion kit, I organized a training session that included why a lay person trained and delegated can rightly serve the Lord s Supper, They learned how to go about it, what a good recommended order of service would look like (they can adapt it), and how to care for the portable kit in cooperation with the Altar Guild. We had a wonderful and heart felt class that included practicing on each other. Shown in the photo are (left to right) Kerry Wood, Gordon Eiland, Mike Ebersole, and Robin Eiland. Not in photo are Ethel Lenz, Jeff Metcalfe, Erma Kendrick, Barbara Bowles, Camille Penningroth and Pastor Randy. The photo above has our Stephen Ministers who were present that night holding the two new additional portable Holy Communion kits that were purchased as gifts by the Eilands. Thank you so much! I know these kits and the Stephen Ministers and Care Receivers who use them will be greatly blessed! Pastor Randy, Stephen Leader 13

Excerpts from God Shots According To Suzanne Anecdotes and Inspirations from a Godly RedHead Collected by Martha Marys Illustrations and Layout by Shelly Malcolm I am Here, Because...I m not All There Get to a Place of Healing. If you are still worrying, then you are not praying! That just gave me the Holy Shivers! Who died and made you God? I can t, God can, I think I will let Him. Feed your faith and your fear will starve. Don t SHOULD on me! A man was excited that his son found God. That s wonderful! Suzanne said, But I didn t know God was lost! Don t quit five minutes before the Miracle! When angry, journal with a red ink pen. Red is the color of anger...and of love PUSH Pray Until Something Happens Put down the magnifying glass and look in the Mirror. Is it ODD or is it GOD?? If it s Odd, it s probably God. Suzanne made cards for People s Kitchen: Free lunch everyday at noon, Jesus paid it all! Just remember two simple prayers: Thank you and Help. In this very room, there is quite enough love for one like me. 14
