A Peak in Your Week-Meal & 6:00pm Bible Study Thu. Fri. Sat. LABOR DAY BLESSINGS! Glad Tidings Potter s Wheel "Getting Your Mind Right" August 22, 2013 by Rev. Tom Eleanor Roosevelt summed it up perfectly: "Pain is inevitable; Suffering is optional; Joy is a choice." It's all about getting our mind right, allowing God to change our mindset from a "O, woe is me" mindset to one which says, "God will provide." I came across the following list the other day on Successify.net. Although it's not overtly spiritual, anyone can see God's hand in it. Go to their website for a better treatment of each item on the list, as I'm just summarizing and adding a few real-life faith observations. "22 Things Happy People Do Differently" 1. Don't hold grudges. Don't give others that power over you. 2. Treat everyone with kindness. This boosts serotonin in the brain, which gives you warm fuzzy feelings. 3. See problems as challenges. Speed bumps and opportunities, not roadblocks and crises. 4. Express gratitude for what they already have. Want what you have. 5. Dream big. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, honest try is not in vain. 6. Don't sweat the small stuff. It's a waste of energy, and energy is precious. 7. Speak well of others. Always. 8. Never make excuses. Own up, then cowboy up. 9. Get absorbed in the present. Yesterday's gone and tomorrow is promised to no one. 10. Wake up at the same time each morning. 11. Avoid social comparison. Don't worry about what others think of you. 12. Choose friends wisely. You will become more and more like the people you hang around with. 13. Never seek approval from others. God loves you. Go with that. 14. Take the time to listen. To others, and to God. 15. Nurture social relationships. No man is an island. 16. Meditate. Be still and know that He is God. 17. Eat well. As in, healthy foods. 18. Exercise. But don't confuse motion with action. 19. Live minimally. More stuff does not equal more happiness. In fact, the opposite is usually true. 20. Tell the truth. It's a lot less work that way. 21. Establish personal control. God can't give you your best future if you don't accept responsibility for your present. 22. Accept what cannot be changed. Okay, so maybe we already knew most of those. Do we put them into practice, though? I will if you will. See you in worship Sunday! There will be four youth choirs/groups coming together to form one large choir. Friendship Baptist, First Baptist, Emmanuel Baptist, and FUMC. The choir will perform at each church once during the school year then have a final concert at a neutral site TBD. More information to come. SUNDAYS: We begin our Fall curriculum this Sunday. Our teachers will be Renee Geiger, Michelle Crawford, Lynsie Carpenter, Glen DeHart. WEDNESDAYS: Our volunteers for teaching August during WNL are Susie Carter, Amy Killebrew and Jeri Moore! We will be scheduling for the months to come. It is our privilege to be in ministry with children. God has entrusted us with a lot of them at First United Methodist! But it's also our responsibility as parents and as a church to provide a SAFE learning environment for their spiritual development. It's going to require ALL OF US to bring this about. Especially during Wednesday Night Live, many of the children we are in ministry to are running wild, inside the church and out. The damage being done to our church facility by unsupervised children is very real. Whatever happened to not running in God's house? To respecting our elders? The danger to our elderly adults from reckless children is very real. The danger to our children equally real. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee has discussed this issue at length and as arrived at the following with respect to WNL: From the time the children finish eating until 5:40, they need to be outside, in the fenced-in areas. Upstairs is off-limits until their teachers take them there. At 5:40, the children need to be on the steps in the Fellowship Hall so their teachers can lead them upstairs. In the event of inclement weather, children need to remain in the Fellowship Hall with their parents. All of us-children and adults-are GUESTS in God's house. May we act as such.
4 4 Our fall study will be Discerning the Voice of God by Priscilla Shiren. This will be a 7-week study and will be a 5 day a week individual Bible Study, so workbooks will be needed by participants. I will need to know how many books to order. All are invited. If you have not participated in this Bible/ Study Book/ DVD driven study, try it; you ll love it!!
