(2 Chronicles 31:8, NRSV) Dear friends, our wonderful church came to mind as I read 2 Chronicles 31 today. It tells the story of God's people becoming faithful givers, in response to God's generosity in their lives. When Hezekiah became King of Israel, around 700 B.C., he encouraged the faithful to respond to God's goodness by tithing. "As soon as word spread, the people of Israel gave in abundance the first fruits of grain, wine, oil, honey, and of all the produce of the field; and they brought abundantly the tithe of everything." (31:5) First UMC finished 2015 in a strong way, financially speaking. We not only funded every dime of every ministry we had committed to fund, we also were able to knock down our outstanding debt on the parking lots to $90,000. That's a really big deal. It means that we sent support to United Methodist ministries in Africa and Asia, where Christians are DAILY giving their lives for the Gospel. It means we funded missionaries in Brazil, and sent our own team to Honduras. Next Summer, we'll add a team trip to Haiti. It also means we generously supported local missions in Grenada such as the Soup Kitchen and the Food Pantry. We reached out to our neighborhood with Water, School Uniforms, Trunk-or-Treat, and Samaritan Fund money for folks' utility bills and groceries. At the same time, we have made great strides in our own facility. Check out the Pairs and Spares classroom remodel, and the 2nd floor Ladies' Bathroom. For his part, King Hezekiah responded to his people's faithfulness in the same way that I want to: "When Hezekiah and the officials came and saw the heaps (tithes), they blessed the Lord and his people Israel." (31:8) He praised God first and foremost, but then also praised his people for their faithfulness. Praise God for teaching us that He is a God of Abundance, not of Scarcity! Praise God for enabling so many of us to take that scary "next step" as disciples-into tithing! Praise God for showing us SO MANY WAYS that First UMC can change lives and make a difference in the world! And now, Well done, good people of Grenada (and beyond)! You have responded to God's goodness and generosity by becoming faithful, cheerful givers! In Joy, Tom

He'll make a presentation on how to give creatively to your church, and how to include First UMC in your estate planning. Adults will start a NEW DVD series called "Share Jesus Without Fear". That will be on or about Jan. 27. We will hunt at Show Me Birds on Saturday morning, and then shoot the Olympic Skeet Range after lunch. After another night in the hotel, we will hunt once again on Sunday morning before returning to Grenada around 9 pm. We have only 3 spots left for a maximum of 10 hunters. If still available, you may secure your spot with a $100 deposit, which will be returned to you after we board the van for the trip. This is to make sure we all have the same opportunity to go, plus it will prevent us from trying to "round up" more hunters at the last minute. The Church Office will be closed on Monday, Jan. 18, in honor of the National Holiday. However, United Methodist Men will meet that evening at 6:00pm in the Fellowship Hall-Dinner & Fellowship!
