Catholic Life Explained Question: What do we know about Joseph, Mary, and the rest of Jesus' relatives? Answer: You may see pictures of Joseph, Mary, and a young Jesus on the feast of the Holy Family. What we do know of them has been treasured throughout the ages. Both Joseph and Mary came from the tribe of Judah and were distant descendants of King David. Tradition gives us the names of Mary's parents - Anne and Joachim - and we venerate them as saints. Joseph was a carpenter, and he taught Jesus his trade. We know that St. Elizabeth was related to Mary, and we call St. John the Baptist Jesus' "cousin." In the Bible, we also see references to Jesus' "brothers and sisters." Who were these people? The most likely theory rests in the language of the time period. The Hebrew people spoke Aramaic. This language had no words for specific family roles. All male relatives were "brother" and all female relatives were "sister." Like many people of his day, Jesus had a large family! So large that he got lost and needed to be found in the Temple. When you think of the Holy Family, remember that Jesus probably had quirky uncles, nosy aunts, doting grandparents, and cousins to play with, just like us! Helping a friend, volunteering for the church or school event, shoveling the sidewalk all of these actions require a yes. Becoming your parent s medical power of attorney, resigning from a job or accepting a new one our lives require yes after yes. Each one sets us up for even more choices. On January 1st, we celebrate Mary as Mother of God. This title is monumental. It elevates a simple girl from Nazareth to the most highly revered woman in all creation. And it all started with a simple yes! But it didn t end there. Being free from sin doesn t mean being free from temptation. Mary had countless opportunities to say yes or no to God throughout her life. She is an example for us on the power of graced perseverance! Whatever your resolutions or decisions in the coming year, ask for Mary s intercession to say yes. St. Stephen, Martyr Chesapeake, VA Page 7

9 Everyday Stewardship Announcements Office Closed Do you practice good stewardship with your family? Stewardship is about more than offerings to a church or charity. It is about continually giving of ourselves in a way that gives glory to God. Sharing our gifts with those in our immediate family honors God and is evidence of your gratitude for these people in your life. How can we effectively accomplish this? One way is to reflect on how the 6 characteristics of an Everyday Steward are present in our family relationships. Are we mindful when we are with our family members? Do we focus on them and their needs rather than our phone or TV? Do we hold up our family in prayer? Their concerns should be our concerns. Do we find ways to show how grateful we are for having them in our lives? The office will be closed from Monday, December 31 and Tuesday, January 1. We will reopen Wednesday, January 2. Happy New Year from the staff! 50/50 Is Back! Stop by the 50/50 table before or after all Masses the weekend of January 5/6. Tickets are $1 each or 6 tickets for $5! You can win some money and help SSM! First Friday Adoration Make a New Year Resolution and spend an hour with Jesus Friday, January 4. Sign up at Worship, Eucharistic Adoration, Sign ups. When we find ourselves lacking in gratitude, we should reflect on what life would be like without them. Do we help one another without being asked because we have a gracious heart? It is easy to take for granted those we see all the time. Hospitality is not just for the stranger or guest. Are we committed to a life of stewardship that not only serves as a good example, but also helps our relatives thrive? Using our gifts without wisdom might mean we have little to give to those we love. Finally, do we hold each other accountable for our decisions and shortcomings? We are on the journey of life together, and no one exists in the Body of Christ alone. Stewardship is about the entirety of our lives. Our faith life is not reserved to Mass on a Sunday. It all begins and ends with those we love. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS St. Stephen, Martyr Chesapeake, VA Page 9
