Be filled with the Spirit as you Sing! Northminster Presbyterian Church Hymn Festival August 19, :00 and 11:00 am (LARGE PRINT BULLETIN)

Welcome Prelude Concerto for two Trumpets and Organ Antonio Vivaldi ( ) arr. Drummond Wolff Allen Miller and Conrad Jones, Trumpets *Call to Worship O come, let us sing to our God; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! We come, O God, into your presence with thanksgiving, rejoicing with songs of praise! *Hymn No. 305 Come Sing, O Church in Joy DARWALL S 148TH *Opening Prayer Higher voices: O God, you sang creation into being and then embraced it in the sacred dance. Lower voices: You breathed your harmonies into its spirit. Higher voices: Your melodies hover in our beings like tunes that echo through a hollow reed. Lower voices: Make us your instruments, tuned for your service. Higher voices: Call forth a symphony of grateful praise. Lower voices: Arrange our lives in rhythm with your music. All: Sing us a new creation for these days. Amen. Anthem How Can I Keep from Singing arr. Jeffrey Honore (born 1959) Chancel Choir My life flows on in endless song; above earth's lamentation, I hear the real though far off hymn that hails a new creation. Refrain: No storm can shake my inmost calm, while to that Rock I m clinging, Since Love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing; It sounds and echoes in my soul; how can I keep from singing? Refrain

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing; All things are mine since I am his, How can I keep from singing? Refrain Prayer of Confession (sung and spoken) Hymn No. 428 Before I Take the Body of My Lord LAYING DOWN (stanzas 1 4) Prayer of Confession Loving God, we confess this day our failure to be truly human. We confess that we often fail to love with all we have and are. We cut ourselves off from each other and erect barriers of division. We build up walls of prejudice. We leave little time for others. Holy Spirit, speak to us. Forgive us. Free us from our sins. Silent Confession O Lord, Have Mercy ORÉ PORIAJÚ VEREKÓ (Sing both English stanzas on cue from leader) Declaration of Forgiveness Brothers and sisters lay aside your burdens and take courage from the gospel. The Lord is gracious and merciful. Accept your forgiveness and rejoice in a love stronger than our sin. Alleluia, Amen!

*Sharing the Peace The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Worshippers may greet one another with words of Christ s peace.) Scripture I Chronicles 16: 7-10, *Hymn For the Music of Creation RUSTINGTON

Children s Time The Kite Story Anna Kurtycz (Children will be dismissed following the story) Hymn 292 As the Wind Song WAIRU (Soloist sings stanza 1, All sings stanza 2) Scripture Ephesians 5: Sermon The Revolution Teri Thomas *Psalm 150, Hymn No. 633 CLEVELAND (Please sing refrain on cue from leader) Ben Plunkett, Cantor Look to this Day ancient Sanskrit translation Anthem How Can I Keep from Singing? arr. Eric Nelson (born 1965) Chancel Choir My life flows on in endless song; above earth's lamentation, Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear the music ringing; It finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? What though my joys and comforts die? My Savior still is living. What though the shadows gather round? A new song Christ is giving. No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that Rock I m clinging. Since Love commands both heav n and earth, how can I keep from singing?

The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing! All things are mind since I am his! How can I keep from singing? Call to Prayer, Hymn No. 474 As a Child Rests AS A CHILD RESTS (Please sing refrain on cue from leader) Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come; thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Offering (Please sign the pew pad and pass it to your neighbor.) Offertory (9:00 am) Toccata on Holy God We Praise Your Name Flor Peeters ( )

Offertory (11:00 am) A Simple Song Leonard Bernstein ( ) Christopher Burchett, Baritone Sing God a simple song: Lauda, Laude... Make it up as you go along: Lauda, Laude... Sing, like you like to sing. God loves all simple things, For God is the simplest of all, for God is the simplest of all. I will sing the Lord a new song to praise him, to bless him, to bless the Lord. I will sing his praises while I live all of my days. Blessed is the man who loves the Lord, blessed is the man who praises Him. Lauda, Lauda, Laude. And walks in his ways. I will lift up my eyes to the hills from whence comes my help. I will lift my voice to the Lord, singing Lauda, Laude. For the Lord is my shade, is the shade upon my right hand, And the sun shall not smite me by day nor the moon by night. Blessed is the man who loves the Lord, Lauda, Lauda, Laude. And walks in his ways. Lauda, Lauda, Laude, Lauda Lauda di da di day... All of my days. *Doxology LASST UNS ERFREUEN Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God, all creatures here below. Alleluia! Alleluia! Praise God, the source of all our gifts! Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts! Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit, Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! *Prayer of Thanksgiving Eternal God, creator of the world and giver of all good, we thank you for the earth, our home, and for the gift of love. We praise you for your love in Jesus Christ, who came to heal this broken world. Because he lives, we live to praise you, our God forever. We give ourselves to you, and with the church through all ages, we thank you for your saving love. Amen.

*Hymn No. 611 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee HYMN TO JOY *Blessing and Charge O God, whom saints and angels delight to worship in heaven, be ever present with your servants who seek through art and music to perfect the praises offered by your people on earth. Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Amen. *Response, Hymn No. 642 Heleluyan, We Are Singing HELELUYAN (Please sing on cue from leader) Our Worship Leaders today include: Dr. Teri Thomas, Rev. Ruth Moore, Barb Hill, Steve Boller, Deb Ronco, Melissa Ballesteros-Benavides, Carrie Savage-Zimmerman, Andy Longo, Debbie Everett. Music in Worship Today the Chancel Choir and guests sing two versions of the hymn How Can I Keep From Singing. The hymn was written by the Baptist preacher, poet and gospel hymn writer Robert Lowry in Lowry is also the composer of Shall We Gather at the River, How Can I Keep From Singing was recorded by Pete Seeger in the 1960s during the folk revival. The hymn gained a new audience in 1990s when Irish musician Enya released a recording of it on her album Shepherd Moons, The first arrangement the choir sings is by Jeffrey Honore (born 1959). Honore serves as the Director of Music at St. Benedict, Fontana, Wisconsin. The second arrangement is by Dr. Eric Nelson (born 1965), who serves as Director of Choral Studies at Emory University, Atlanta. He is also the Artistic Director of the Atlanta Master Chorale, a 45 voice adult chamber choir that specializes in a cappella repertoire. Near the beginning and end of Nelson s arrangement, snippets of the hymn O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing may be heard.
