1 J a n u a r y Knights of Columbus St. Joseph Council #7528 From The Grand Knight Christmas Day has passed, but let us continue to celebrate Christmas season Worthy Brothers All, during Advent our Council was busy anticipating Christmas as we delivered 228 winter coats to local school children, and helped assemble and deliver over 100 Christmas baskets to local families. But Christmas season actually begins, not ends, on Christmas Day, the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. During the Octave (eight days of celebration) following Christmas we also celebrate the feast in honor of St. Stephen, the first martyr December 26, the feast in honor of St. John the Apostle and Evangelist December 27, the feast of the Holy Innocents, the infants slain by King Herod, celebrated December 28, the feast of the Holy Family of Jesus December 30, and on the (Continued on page 2) Rick Lowman, Grand Knight Tim Philomeno, FSS Editor INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Help Wanted 2 Save the Date 2 KOM/FOM 3 Insurance 3 Crab Feed 4 Birthdays 5 Anniversaries 5 Nativity House 5 Good of the Order 6 Council Leadership 6 Recruitment 7 Council Events 8 Chancellor During the month of December, St. Vincent de Paul Parish hosts a group of homeless men at night in the social hall. Our parishioners also provide home-cooked meals for a portion of the month. Recently, Bev Mansanarez, Jean Coen, Trini Knapper and Marianne Savino donated and set up a Christmas tree with lights and ornaments for these men. The provision of food and shelter has been a tradition here for years. Henceforth, this tree will become part of that tradition. Again, the Cookie Ladies are asked to get food handler cards. It only takes a few minutes, and ten bucks. Yes, I know this is a bother. Don t do it until after Christmas. As a special incentive (BRIBE), the Chancellor will personally make a dozen pizzelles for each food handler. The Ask By Tony Robinson, Advocate I am a Knight of Columbus. Why, because a Knight asked me. Did I respond the first time I was asked? No. It took several years before I decided to join and become a part of the great fraternity of Catholic Gentlemen. This is how you become a Knight or at least that s how it seems. If you look at the process of how one becomes a Knight, it is the offer, (ask) but what drives the ask? Is it the quota established by Supreme? The push of the Membership Chairman? Maybe, but I believe that it comes from the desire to be with men who share the same ideals and beliefs that all Knights have. This does not mean that we all share the same political or even social beliefs, but we do have core values that make us join together. Church, Family and Country. This core is what sets us apart from the rest. This core is what brings about the the ask and ultimately the response Yes. For some like me it took several years to realize that I did belong with the Knights and that through my belonging I began a journey that has strengthened my core beliefs and made me a part of the great Catholic Fraternity (Continued on page 2)

2 The Cross and Compass Page 2 (Continued from page 1) Octave Day, January 1, we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. Christmas season continues with the Epiphany of the Lord, celebrated this year January 6. On this solemnity of the manifestation of Christ, the Magi, or three wise men, arrived and offered the Baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The following is taken from the website for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops "Christmas is one of the most important days of the church year, second only to Easter itself. It is the feast of the incarnation, the feast of God becoming flesh. It is a uniquely Christian teaching, the Divine choosing to become one of us. Because of this belief, God is not only Transcendent, but also wholly Immanent. While remaining Transcendent (meaning we must rise above our present condition to reach Him), He is at the same time Immanent (meaning He is with us as we rise toward Him)...The liturgical season of Christmas begins with the vigil Masses on Christmas Eve and concludes on the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this season we celebrate the birth of Christ into our world and into our hearts, and reflect on the gift of salvation that is born with Him." Even though many Catholics believe Christmas season ends with the Epiphany, hence the Twelve Days of Christmas, official teaching of the church calls for an end of the season with the Baptism of the Lord, this year January 13. A relevant side note of this quote is that the design of the new ten lower windows of our church incorporates the concepts of Transcendence and Immanence; the windows are scheduled to be installed at the end of Brothers, while so many wrap up their Christmas season December 26 or even with the Epiphany January 6, let's continue to celebrate the feasts and festivities through the Baptism of the Lord January 13. Ordinary time of the church liturgical year begins Monday January 14, that is the day we will take down the church Christmas tree and nativity scene. Until then continue to celebrate this season of joy and hope for salvation. Enjoy a blessed Christmas season with your loved ones, and a Happy New Year! Vivat Jesus, Rick Lowman, Grand Knight (Continued from page 1) of Knights. Not all who are asked are ready. Not all who are asked understand the need to belong. Not all who are asked think that they belong. Our job as Knights is to make sure that when these men are ready, we are there with the ask. We need both parts of the process, the ask and the yes. Do not give up on making the ask. Sometimes it takes just a little bit longer for some of us. Bring in a new Brother it will make both of you better. Help Wanted This is early but I am recruiting as many knights as possible to help with our Fri. fish breading this coming lent. We currently try to have at least 3 volunteers helping from 1:30 PM till done ( around 3PM) We will have a schedule for each week & make any accommodations needed for any new member of our crews. This is a great way to help with our weekly fish fry & get to know many of our present Knights. If interested please contact me at: or Rhusky1@gmail.com Looking forward to another great weekly fish fry during lent. PS we do have a GREAT time working ( if that s what you want to call it). Ralph Osman Save The Date You never know what can happen at a baseball game at any level. One warm summer night I decided to go to a Tacoma baseball game witness an unknown pitcher in the LA Dodgers system set a PCL record by striking out 19 batters in one game. This pitcher went on to the majors & became one of the main pitchers for the Dodgers for many yeas. His name was Bert Hutten. It was something that I have always remembered & has endured me to baseball. This year this counsel will have a Knight s the ballgame with the Wounded Warriors at the Tacoma rainier game on Sat. Aug.3rd. This will be a great family affair for everyone. Signups & ticket information will be coming out at a later date.

3 The Cross and Compass Page 3 Knight of the Month Awards/ Family of the Month Awards Beginning with this issue, we will recognize those Knights honored as Knight of the Month and Family of the Month, so that those of us who were not at the monthly General Meeting can still honor these Brothers. First we will recap the award recipients from July through October: ` Knight of Month Family of Month July Paul Savino Vince and Bev Mansanarez August Jose Vaquero Tim and Beth Philomeno September Derrick Foeller Don and Patti Miller Special Award: Past Grand Knight Don Miller October Larry Neville Joe and Jeanne Krick November Knight of the Month Will Pagarigan Will is serving our parish very well as an instructor to the children receiving First Communion. He is also a Eucharistic Minister serving the Liturgy. He moved to Federal Way several years ago from northern California and brought to our attention the call to help those in that area devastated by wildfires and then mudslides caused by heavy rains. November Family of the Month Boyd and Ann Wilton Jr As part of the Coats for Kids Program, Supreme sent our winter coats to Issaquah as a central delivery point. We put out a call for help to pick up the coats in Issaquah and bring them back to Federal Way for delivery to the school children. Boyd answered that call along with his wife Ann. Financial Secretary Vince Mansanarez also answered the call to drive to Issaquah to pick up coats. Brother Reuben Morales led this very successful and important program. Thank you Boyd, Ann, Vince and Reuben, outstanding! Congratulations and thanks to our Knights of the Month and Families of the Month, the Brothers of Council #7528 are grateful for your service. Rick Lowman, Grand Knight By Mike Rutland, FIC Field Agent Insurance Benefits This is really a special time as we approach the end of the year and our thoughts turn to themes of peace on Earth and Goodwill to Men! We think of our savior s birth in Bethlehem and the beginning of this chapter of salvation history. Many of us will be scurrying around buying a Christmas tree, getting it decorated; looking for that perfect gift for our spouse, our kids and maybe grandkids. There are parties and school Christmas shows. There is a lot going on and you re busier than ever. You are being asked to slow down for just a few minutes and consider some financial issues that come up at the end of the calendar year, such as; Not meeting your individual or family deductible on your health insurance plan. Do you have a health savings account? Earned income for the year that you may want to contribute to your IRA, ROTH IRA or 401K. On IRA s, have you received your required minimum distribution for this year? As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, let us be thankful for all the graces God has showered on us, especially the gift of his son, our Savior!

4 The Cross and Compass Page 4 Yikes...it s Almost Crab Feed Time Well it s December 22 as I write this, and I m doing this because we are getting closer to our 15th Annual Crab Feed. And I need your help with the last leg of this event. I ll get to that in a minute. Do you know what we do with the money we make? Let me tell you Our Council supports the following charities and causes with fundraising as a result of your time and talents: we generously give to St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church (Federal Way, WA), St. Vincent de Paul Parish School Scholarships, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Catholic Seminarians, Columbus Charities (including Special Olympics, Cancer Care Centers of Puget Sound), Coats for Kids -- we just purchased and delivered 228 winter coats to Federal Way school children who did not have coats, as well as several others. Can you see how important this Crab Feed is? For the last 14 years we hear feedback like this: Talk about outstanding..how about fantastic..or maybe the best I ve ever been to or..this was unbelievable.you guys are the best the menu was superb! And what a classy way to do it the young servers were ready on the spot serving and picking up. And I could say a lot more..because those of you that have worked our Annual Crab Feed have already heard and will continue to hear the same confirming feedback.absolutely without a doubt the greatest! Why do we hear such glowing remarks? Pretty simple, it s because of you from food and supply pickup, hall set up, kitchen crew (salads, garlic bread, clam chowder, crab and everything else), bartending crew, serving crew, raffle ticket sales crew, cleanup crew, and the fabulous kids serving the tables. For me, this event each year allows me to sing the praises for a remarkable group of men. When I started this article I said I would get back to the last leg of this event in a minute. Here goes. January 26th is right around the corner and we still have seats available. So what? Fellow Knights are saying Feedback is that it s going pretty good, that we're almost sold out. Probably are sold out, because we started months ago. That all sounds pretty good but the real truth is that we are not completely sold out. We have tables confirmed and not paid for. Brother Knights, you are collecting sales from our guests you have reserved the tables for, but for your own tables you are saying I ll get the money to you in a few days. And my calls for collecting the money are answered with the greatest reasons for not paying that I ve ever heard. So here I am writing to you to ask you to do what s right. If you haven't paid for your seats or tables yet, please get the money in right away to Tim or myself. The success of the Crab Feed and our ability to support the above charities and causes depends on it. For the remaining unsold seats, what I d like you to do is ask your friends or neighbors if they d like to go to one of the best sit-down crab dinners served to them, including clam chowder, salad, garlic bread, plenty of crab, and finishing the night with cheesecake. How about this, the opportunity to win $500.00, $ and $200.00? You know, there will definitely be three winners. Over the years we ve always pulled it off and sold out. I know with your help this last leg will finish soon and we all will be either enjoying a terrific meal and fun filled conversation with our friends, or, we will be greeting our guests as they buy beverages and raffle tickets for the prize money. In closing, I recently spoke with a non-catholic man who paid for his table. He asked me who else does things for the church like the Knights do? Good question. So, have you really thought about how all the things going on in our church get done? It s mostly us, the Knights. I don t think we realize the difference we make and the accomplishments that so meaningfully and significantly impact the lives we touch. You.all of you, make me ever so mindful of the wonderful things that we do. You are amazing men, and I am forever grateful to be with you. May this Christmas be full of joy and kind-heartedness to all of you and your families. Remember, you ll be making memories that will be talked about for years. After all, it s in your hands. 7 The Cross and Compass Page 7 Lecturer Bill Shell Last month our worthy Grand Knight offered one reason that he joined the Knights of Columbus was for the fellowship it offered with like minded Catholic gentlemen. I would like to expand on that thought in this month's article. Men in general and it seems to me Catholic men in particular have a problem with sharing their faith journey with others. Is it because our faith is weaker than others? I don't think so. I believe that it is because of the past experience that we have as Catholics. Prior to the Second Vatican Council, we had our religious experience fed to us from the clergy. We were not encouraged to open and study the bible. Nor were opportunities available for discussion with others of the laity regarding the Church or our own faith journey. This developed because historically, lay Catholics were uneducated while the clergy were the most educated in society. Vatican II though open the doors of the church and brought a welcome breath of fresh air which encouraged all to read and study the bible like our Protestant brethren have been doing for centuries. The bible is a good place to start but not for demonstrating how well we can quote a particular passage. It is a wonderful means to enable us to share how God is working in our lives or how we wish to know how He is working in our lives. The process is not complicated. For example one can take the reading of the day and discuss what the passage means to you in your life. I personally like the Liturgy of the Hours for reflection using the "Laudate" App on my phone. The most important thing is to get other Catholic Men to join you. Be it other Knights, your golf or bowling buddies or the like. I believe that men it seems open up better to other men rather than in mixed groups. I am sure your golf game could use some help from God. I know that many of you are in groups that share your faith but I am hopeful that more of us will take the challenge to help each of us grow our faith by sharing it with our brother knights. Financial Secretary Vince Mansanarez My Brother Knights of Columbus, I am stepping down as the Financial Secretary this month. It has been a joy and honor to serve you in this position. Joe Krick will be assuming the position. Please give him all the support that you have given to me. This position requires a tremendous amount of time to faithfully do all the duties required to meet Supremes expectations. I know that Joe will be up for this and our Council will remain one the best in the state of Washington and throughout the entire Order. Vivat Jesus, Vince Mansanarez Recruitment Corner My Brother Knights, recruitment can be trying to even for the most seasoned among us. Approaching a potential candidate and anticipating a "NO I'm not interested" is the biggest fear even for a seasoned recruiter. It's the inherent fear of rejection that causes us to just avoid the confrontation all together. The direct effect of this fear that has us in its grip, a potential Brother Knight is never asked and WE deny that person of an opportunity. Let's start by looking at the "NO". When someone says no to your offer what are they really saying? They are actually saying no to themselves. They are denying themselves of an opportunity. An opportunity that you as a member are offering. An opportunity to associate themselves with men who are like minded and have the same values and faith. An opportunity to become a member of something bigger than them, membership in the Largest Catholic Organization in the World. An opportunity to share in the vision and dream of Fr Michael J. McGivney. It is my hope that as we go through the next couple of months, we'll discuss how to get past the fear of rejection and learn how to be a good recruiter. Until next month, Vivat Jesus!.
