1 ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST WORSHIP 8 th November 2015 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Vicky is taking our service and preaching this morning A warm welcome and thanks to Tom Paine- Tsherit, music teacher at Bedelsford School, who is playing the Last Post and Rouse at our Act of Remembrance today. HYMNS Opening: I vow to thee my country Words on back page of service sheet Gradual: God! As with silent hearts Words on back page of service sheet Offertory: 366 O God our help in ages past Final Hymn: 428 Make me a channel of your peace THE COLLECT Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen THE READINGS are on the back page of this sheet. POST COMMUNION PRAYER God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. ACT OF REMEMBRANCE Let us remember before God and commend to his safe keeping, those who have died for their country in war and all those who have lived and died in the service of the peoples of the world. We will remember them. The Last Post is played. Two minutes silence is kept. The Rouse is played. Almighty and eternal God, from whose love in Christ we cannot be parted, either by death or life; hear our prayers and thanksgiving for all whom we remember this day; fulfil in them the purpose of your love; and bring us all, with them, to your eternal joy, through Jesus Christ our Lord. 4 HYMN I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love; The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best; The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes undaunted the final sacrifice. And there's another country, I've heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace. HYMN God! As with silent hearts we bring to mind how hate and war diminish humankind, we pause and seek in worship to increase our knowledge of the things that make for peace. Hallow our will as humbly we recall the lives of those who humbly gave their all. We thank you, Lord, for women, children, men who seek to serve in love today as then. Give us deep faith to comfort those who mourn, high hope to share with all the newly born, strong love in our pursuit of human worth: lest we forget the future of this earth. So, Prince of Peace, disarm our trust in power, teach us to coax the plant of peace to flower. May we, impassioned by your living Word, remember forward to a world restored. Fred Kaan, minister, hymn writer and lifelong ambassador for peace and justice died 4 Oct 2009 BIBLE READINGS JONAH 3.1-5,10 The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day s walk. And he cried out, Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Thanks be to God. HEBREWS 9.24-end For Christ did not enter a sanctuary made by human hands, a mere copy of the true one, but he entered into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. Nor was it to offer himself again and again, as the high priest enters the Holy Place year after year with blood that is not his own; for then he would have had to suffer again and again since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to remove sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for mortals to die once, and after that the judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin, but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL MARK Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. All: Glory to you, O Lord Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. As Jesus

5 passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. This is the Gospel of the Lord All: Praise to you, O Christ
