THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY 25TH JANUARY, 2015 A Prayer Book for Australia - The Second Order of The Holy Communion PLEASE BE QUIET AND REVERENT BEFORE THE EUCHARIST Hymn Tis 672 Please Stand GATHERING OF GOD S PEOPLE Page 119 Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessed be God s kingdom, now and for ever. The Lord be with you. And also with you. Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. KYRIE ELEISON Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. GLORIA IN EXCELSIS DEO Glory to God in the highest and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One; you alone are the Lord: you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY Bountiful God, through your Son you have called us to repent of our sin, to believe the good news, and to celebrate the coming of your kingdom: teach us, like Christ s first apostles, to hear the call to discipleship, and, forsaking old ways, to proclaim the gospel of new life to a broken world; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. LITURGY OF THE WORD 2 Please sit Embracing the Tension-Before Jesus proclaims the realm of God is near, or Paul insists this world is passing away, a psalmist knows that trusting in the power of God s love puts us on a collision course with the way the world commonly operates. Making clear we do have alternatives, we are invited to consider in whom or what we place our trust. A Reading from the Book of Jonah Conversion of Nineveh The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time, saying, Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day s walk. And he cried out, Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human being or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. Human beings and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God
3 changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. (Jonah ) For the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. God alone is my rock and my salvation. For God alone my soul in silence waits; truly, my hope is in him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold, so that I shall not be shaken. R In God is my safety and my honour; God is my strong rock and my refuge. Put your trust in him always, O people, pour out your hearts before him, for God is our refuge. R Those of high degree are but a fleeting breath, even those of low estate cannot be trusted. On the scales they are lighter than a breath, all of them together. Put no trust in extortion; in robbery take no empty pride; though wealth increase, set not your heart upon it. R God has spoken once, twice have I heard it, that power belongs to God. Steadfast love is yours, O Lord, for you repay everyone according to his deeds. R (Psalm ) A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. (1Corinthians ) For the word of the Lord Thanks be to God. Hymn Tis 589 Please stand Alleluia, alleluia! The kingdom of God is near: believe the Good News! Alleluia, alleluia! The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from The Holy Gospel According to Mark Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news. As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, Follow me and I will make you fish for people. And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw
4 James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. (Mark ) For the Gospel of our Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. HOMILY Please sit LITURGY OF BAPTISM THE DECISION Page 57 The priest says to the sponsors of the candidate Braxton Maxwell McKeough Before God and this congregation, you must affirm that you turn to Christ and reject all that is evil: Do you turn to Christ? I turn to Christ. Do you repent of your sins? I repent of my sins. Do you reject selfish living, and all that is false and unjust? I reject them all. Do you renounce Satan and all evil? I renounce all that is evil. Almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, and lead you in the light of Christ to his everlasting kingdom. Amen. Will you each, by God s grace, strive to live as disciples of Christ, loving God with your whole heart, and your neighbour as yourself, until your life s end? I will, with God s help. To the congregation You have heard our brother and sister respond to Christ. Will you support them in this calling? We will. The priest, ministers, candidate and sponsors proceed to the font I now ask you to affirm as yours the faith of the Church. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in God the Son? I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose from the dead;
5 he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. This is the faith of the Church. This is our faith: We believe in one God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Braxton Maxwell I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The priest makes a cross on the forehead of Braxton Maxwell with the holy oil of chrism, saying; I sign you with the sign of the cross to show that you are marked as Christ s own for ever. Live as a disciple of Christ: fight the good fight, finish the race, keep the faith. Confess Christ crucified, proclaim his resurrection, look for his coming in glory. A candle is presented to Braxton God has brought you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God the Father. God has called you into his Church. We therefore receive and welcome you as a member with us of the body of Christ, as a child of the one Heavenly Father, and as an inheritor of the kingdom of God. The priest and ministers return to the Altar. LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST In Baptism, God has made us one in Christ. His Spirit is with us. The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Hymn Tis 598

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Please Kneel...in remembrance of me. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. 10 10 My Dear People, This morning, it is with much pleasure that we welcome Braxton Maxwell McKeough for the Sacrament of Holy Baptism. Braxton was born on the 11th June last year, and he is the first child of Aaron and Samantha. His godparents are Rebecca McKellar and Nathan Sheather. Today s reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark, the story of the call to discipleship of the two sets of brothers, Peter and Andrew, and James and John, is appropriate for a baptism. Although Braxton is a little boy, like the holy apostles of old he is called by Jesus to follow him and to fish for people. This commission for ministry is indicated by the anointing with the holy chrism immediately after baptism. It is a sign that the Holy Spirit has been given to Braxton so that, as part of a royal priesthood,he may be an instrument of God s love, peace and reconciliation in the world. The first reading, from the Book of Jonah, represents the dominant Old Testament tradition that Israel is called to be a light to the nations. Although there were some who believed that the call to be God s chosen people implied separation from the nations, a notion that appears in the Old Testament Books of Ezra and Nehemiah, the more important and godly teaching is that Israel was called to serve humanity. This is important for our understanding of mission in the modern world, and the Church is called to exist for those who never attend services. I think that we have often failed the local community by forgetting this responsibility. We can be like a grease factory that makes grease to lubricate the machinery in order to make more grease! Today s second reading, from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians, reminds us that the present form of the world is passing away, and that we need to seize the opportunity to emphasise things that really matter. If the Church were a factory, we need to be producing something for our customers, and not merely being busy with things for ourselves. And what do we offer the people of the Manning Valley? Jesus teaches that life has purpose, and the purpose is to love, that our deepest desire is union with God, that the false gods of money, status and pleasure diminish our humanity and lead to unhappiness, that we are never alone, and that the goal of our living is the fullness of life in God s kingdom. By God s grace, Braxton has commenced a journey. May he be aware of Jesus presence and enabled to be an instrument of his love, joy and peace. May God bless you. Father Keith.
