All Saints Church 12 November 2017 Remembrance Sunday Family Service Welcome!

Welcome to our Family Service. There is no children s workshop and we all stay together in church for the whole service. Busy bags are available at both doors and if anyone gets restless, please feel very welcome to walk about the church with them during the service. Later in the service, everyone is invited to come to the altar to receive communion or God s blessing. All who are communicant members of this or another church are welcome to receive communion. Please bow your head to indicate if you would like a blessing. During communion, the choir sings on behalf of the congregation; this allows us the opportunity to think more deeply about our relationship with God in our lives, through meditating on the words and music chosen for the day. The mass setting today is Darke in F. After the service, refreshments are served in the East end of the Church. Please feel very welcome to stay and enjoy, and if you have not been to the church before, please do introduce yourself to one of the clergy or churchwardens we d love to meet you. Weekday Communion Services: Tuesday 12noon; Wednesday 12noon (both Common Worship); Thursday 10.30am (BCP). Silent Prayer is kept on Fridays at noon The Parish is part of an Anglican Team with St John the Evangelist Church in Grove Lane and St John the Baptist Kingston Vale, and also a member of the Local Ecumenical Project with Union Street Baptist Church and the United Reformed Church in Eden Street. Church office: info@allsaintskingston.co.uk Tel Development office: klong@whereenglandbegan.co.uk Tel Rector: Rev Jonathan Wilkes Tel: jonathan@allsaintskingston.co.uk This booklet is for you to take home PLEASE KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES

Order for a Family Service The Opening Hymn is 417. The Lord be with you, and also with you. In a few moments of silence we remember before God the things we have done that are wrong, always remembering God s readiness to forgive us and set us free from the mistakes of the past. We say together... Lord Jesus, we have said and thought and done things that were wrong. We wish that we had done better and are truly sorry. We ask you to forgive us and pray that you will help us to start again and be the people you want us to be. Amen The Lord enrich you with his grace, and nourish you with his blessing; the Lord defend you in trouble and keep you from all evil; the Lord accept your prayers, and absolve you from your offences, for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Saviour. Amen.

The Gloria We sing the Gloria. We all sing the lines in bold. Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Father. Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Father. To him be glory for ever. To him be glory for ever. Alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen, alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen. Glory to God, glory to God, Son of the Father. Glory to God, glory to God, Son of the Father. To him be glory for ever. To him be glory for ever. Alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen, alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen. Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Spirit. Glory to God, glory to God, glory to the Spirit. To him be glory for ever. To him be glory for ever. Alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen, alleluia, amen, Alleluia, amen. We say together the collect the special prayer for this Sunday: Almighty Father, whose will is to restore all things in your beloved Son, the King of all: govern the hearts and minds of those in authority, and bring the families of the nations, divided and torn apart by the ravages of sin, to be subject to his just and gentle rule; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

We stand for the hymn Make me a channel of your peace Make me a channel of your peace. Where there is hatred let me bring your love. Where there is injury, your pardon, Lord And where there's doubt, true faith in you. Chorus: Oh, Master grant that I may never seek So much to be consoled as to console To be understood as to understand To be loved as to love with all my soul. Make me a channel of your peace Where there's despair in life, let me bring hope Where there is darkness, only light And where there's sadness, ever joy. Chorus: Make me a channel of your peace It is in pardoning that we are pardoned In giving to all men that we receive And in dying that we're born to eternal life. Chorus: We stand and turn to face the centre of the church from where today s Gospel is read.

The Gospel Matthew 25:1-13 Hear the Gospel of our Lord according to Matthew: Glory to you, O Lord. Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him. Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out. But the wise replied, No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves. And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, Lord, lord, open to us. But he replied, Truly I tell you, I do not know you. Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. The Talk The talk today is given by the Rector, Jonathan Wilkes. After the Talk we sing Hymn 499 during which we process to the War Memorial at the East End. This is followed by an act of remembrance which ends: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them. We will remember them.

The choir will sing Contakion of the Dead Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy Saints: where sorrow and pain are no more; neither sighing, but life everlasting. Thou only art immortal, the Creator and Maker of Man: and we are mortal, formed of the earth, and unto earth shall we return: for so thou didst ordain, when thou createdst me, saying Dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. All we go down to the dust; and, weeping o'er the grave, we make our song: alleluya, alleluya, alleluya. Give rest, O Christ, to thy servant with thy saints, Where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting We remain in the East End for the Intercessions. The peace of the Lord be always with you And also with you The Peace We offer one another a sign of peace. We return to our seats for the Offertory Hymn 273 (to the tune of 302) during which a collection is taken for the work of the church, and the bread and wine for the Eucharist are brought to the altar. Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, The glory, the splendour, and the majesty; For everything in heaven and on earth is yours. The Eucharistic Prayer

All things come from you, And of your own do we give you. The Lord is here. His spirit is with us. Lift up your hearts We lift them to the Lord Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give thanks and praise. It is right to praise you, Father; Lord of all creation; in your love you made us for yourself. When we turned away you did not reject us, but came to meet us in your Son. You embraced us as your children and welcomed us to sit and eat with you. In Christ you shared our life that we might live in him and he in us. He opened his arms of love upon the cross and made for all the perfect sacrifice for sin. On the night he was betrayed, at supper with his friends he took bread, and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to them, saying: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me. Father we do this in remembrance of him: his body is the bread of life. At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine, he gave you thanks, and said: Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins: do this in remembrance of me. Father we do this in remembrance of him: his blood is shed for all.

As we proclaim his death and celebrate his rising in glory, send your Holy Spirit that this bread and this wine may be to us the body and blood of your dear Son. As we eat and drink these holy gifts make us one in Christ, our risen Lord. With your whole church throughout the world we offer you this sacrifice of praise and lift our voice to join the eternal song of heaven: Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus, Deus Sabaoth. Pleni sunt cœli et terra Gloria tua. Hosanna in excelsis. Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini. Hosanna in excelsis. Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Invitation to Communion Everyone is welcome to come to the altar to receive a blessing or the bread and wine. Draw near with faith. Receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ which he gave for you and his blood which he shed for you. Eat and drink in remembrance that he died for you, and feed on him in your hea rts by faith with thanksgiving. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis. Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world, grant us Thy peace. While the congregation comes forward to receive Holy Communion the choir will sing Never weather beaten sail (Campion). Never weather-beaten sail more willing bent to shore. Never tired pilgrim s limbs affected slumber more, Than my wearied sprite now longs to fly out of my troubled breast: O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and take my soul to rest. Ever blooming are the joys of Heaven s high Paradise. Cold age deafs not there our ears nor vapour dims our eyes: Glory there the sun outshines whose beams the blessed only see: O come quickly, glorious Lord, and raise my sprite to thee! After Communion we say together: God of peace, whose Son Jesus Christ proclaimed the kingdom

and restored the broken to wholeness of life: look with compassion on the anguish of the world, and by your healing power make whole both people and nations; through our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen The Final Hymn is Great is thy faithfulness. Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father; There is no shadow of turning with Thee; Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not; As Thou hast been, Thou forever will be. Chorus Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed Thy hand hath provided; Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest, Sun, moon and stars in their courses above Join with all nature in manifold witness To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love. Chorus Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide; Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! Chorus The Blessing Go in peace to Love and serve the Lord. In the name of Christ. Amen.

NOTICES AND NEWS 18 November 7.30pm Kingston Choral Society Tour Guides Are you interested in the history of the church? Do you enjoy meeting new people? Why not become a tour guide?! We are running a 1 hour training session on Tuesday 21 November at 1pm for prospective tour guides. If you are interested in attending, or would like more information, please contact Kate at heritage@allsaintskingston.co.uk. Annual consideration about Stewardship Just once a year we invite people to consider the amount that they donate towards the running costs of All Saints Church. The financial facts of our situation are summed up in a document that the PCC has produced. There is a copy of this for each of us to take away to read, consider and respond to. We aim, as last year, for the process to finish on Advent Sunday. Church Bells As you arrived at church today you may have noticed that the bells sounded a little different from usual. This is because, to mark Remembrance Sunday, we are ringing half-muffled. We fix a thick leather pad to one side of each clapper so that on one stroke the bells sound normally, and on the next relatively quietly, almost like an echo. For the ringers, the only difference it makes is that we need to listen to what we are doing even more carefully than usual, as the muffled stroke can be difficult to hear. Remembrance Sunday The Civic Remembrance service is after the 9.30 service today. We would be very grateful if you could drink your coffee near the font and if there was any help for the wardens moving a few chairs we would be very grateful. The start of Children s Workshop Just a reminder that children are invited to come to the altar at the end of the first hymn for a short prayer and then going off to their activities. Parking at the church Please remember that if you need to park your car on the church drive for any reason we do ask that you ring the office to book a space. This

is especially important as we head towards Christmas but is always the case. We can t guarantee that you will be able to park if you don t let us know you re coming. Bicycles If you bring a bike to church we re needing to ask that you chain them up on the bike racks outside rather than bring them into the building. The Rector will try to lead by example New Sidespeople needed We especially need a few more volunteers over the Christmas period but it would be good to get a few more names on our rota. See Liz Deller if you can help. ASK Topical Lunch, Thursday 16 November. Making Kingston greener, cleaner and better. Kingston changes at breakneck speed. Marilyn Mason talks about how the Kingston Environment Forum works to ensure that the Borough also gets better for everyone. What do you think? Join in this open discussion. Lunch at the East End Café from 12:00 pm or bring your own sandwiches. Talk starts at 1:00 pm. Finishes 1:45 pm. Children s Society Boxes Now is the time to empty the Children's Society boxes. We want to count and pay in as many as possible together and will return the emptied boxes around the end of October. A number have already been handed in to the office for which we thank you. You can leave your box on the piano on Sundays when we will try to have someone there to receive them or hand them into the office. Any queries to Phil. Walker on or pwalker535@gmail.com. Please note that the old pound coins are no longer valid in shops after the end of this month but we are more than happy to take as many as you like! Many thanks for your support. Tokens for those who donate directly Just a reminder that if you are someone who makes your donation to All Saints by bank transfer you can pick up a token before the service to symbolise your donation when the collecting bags come round at the offertory.
