2 Page 2 Pastor s Page The Epiphany of the Lord Dear Friends in Christ, I recently noticed that Tess, my overgrown lapdog, has a tendency to growl and bark at things and shapes that she doesn't recognize. It usually happens in the early morning or at twilight, when shadows and low light can obscure otherwise familiar objects. A lone motorcycle sitting in the parking lot becomes an intruder. A barbecue grill incurs her wrath, the hairs on the back of her neck standing straight up as I egg her on - " What is that thing, Tess? Go get it!" Barking angrily, she races toward the threatening shape until she recognizes it, settles down, and trots back to my side, satisfied, I suppose, that she may have protected me from danger. Mammals being more or less wired pretty much the same, Tess' reaction to the unfamiliar is instructive. How often do we find ourselves filled with fear or dread of that which is unknown to us? And how much more did humanity react with anxiety toward an unfamiliar God until the revelation of God Incarnate in Jesus Christ? Before Jesus, God seemed distant, unfamiliar, even threatening, especially among the Gentiles, a force to appease rather than a person to love. At Christmas Midnight Mass, the shepherds, terrified, are told to not be afraid, and to come close and see the Word made flesh lying in the manger. On Christmas Day, John s Gospel tells us that the Word, who is the light that dispels all darkness and enlightens every mind, dwells among us. As the brightness of this day unfolds, it illuminates the unfamiliar shapes lurking in the shadows of our hearts - the nagging doubts, the persistent fears, the worries that God still somehow condemns us, or at the very least, highly disapproves. The lingering uncertainty that God could ever come so close to us, or the He even wants to, is what has driven most heresies throughout the intervening millennia. Some have claimed that Jesus was truly God, but not really human, taking only a human appearance or shape. Others have claimed that Jesus could not have been God while He lived in the flesh, but only could only have become God after His Resurrection and Ascension, a sort of reward from God for his obedience. Most heresies, in fact, share these traits they cannot accept that God, in his perfection, would ever wish to come so close to us as to actually become one of us, and each has unsuccessfully attempted, in one way or another, to rob us of the unique joy of knowing that in the manger lies the union of Heaven and Earth. May Jesus Christ, True God and True Man, bless your hearts and homes with the light of His Presence among you throughout this holy season. -Fr. Bruce Happy New Year!

As you may know, my surgeon removed my right kidney which had a cancerous tumor. Then my right lung collapsed. After straightening the lung, I cannot breathe as deeply or walk as steadily.
