1 Dear Christian Friends, God has given us another year of grace as we begin the 2019 th year since the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. During Advent we prayed for Christ s return to bring heaven to this earth, but instead God gives us another year. What do we do with the additional time that God has given us? Of course, we eat, sleep, and work, but life is so much more than that. Without love, life has little meaning. The scripture tells us that God is love (1 John4:8) and so we are given another year to grow in the love of God that has been revealed to us in Jesus. In addition to his gracious act of love in pouring his life out for us on the cross, our Lord gave us the great commandment to love God and love our neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40) and the great commission to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Now at our January annual meeting of the congregation, we will consider for adoption our revised mission statement, Loved by God in Jesus Christ, we are sent to share the love of God in the world. I believe the mission statement is clear and concise, and gets to the heart of what we are about as the people of Edgewood Lutheran Church. I trust we will adopt this mission statement, but it is equally important that we live it out in our lives both individually and as a community of faith. We just celebrated Christmas, rejoicing that God has touched the earth with divine love in the person of Jesus, Son of God and Savior, who through his life, death, and resurrection has granted us forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. Knowing God s great love for us, or as our mission statement says, Loved by God in Jesus Christ, we are sent to share God s love in the world. Where in the world are we sent? As individual Christians we leave our Sunday gathering and are sent back to our homes, family, neighborhood, workplace, and our entire circle of relationships. We are sent to love by acting charitably toward others showing kindness, support, forgiveness, and encouragement to others. But also, when appropriate, we share that Jesus is the reason and motivation for our deeds of love. As a congregation, or community of faith, which is located in Fruitport, we need to be intentional about sharing God s love in Fruitport. This past year we walked in the Fruitport Memorial Day parade, hosted a petting zoo event, and did a Feeding America food truck distribution for the people of the community. This year we hope to have some people participate in a mentoring program in the Fruitport schools. We need to be thinking of more ways that we can engage the people of Fruitport and invite them to get to know Jesus at our Sunday gatherings. We also have a committee that is presently talking to some community leaders one on one so that we can get a better feel for the needs of Fruitport and how we as a congregation might respond to those needs. Adopting a mission statement is easy. Living it is the hard part. Yet God has graced us with another year, and we have received God s love in Jesus. What a blessing! Let us all use our time wisely to live and share God s love in the world. A blessed New Year to all! Pastor Len

3 ANNUAL MEETING JAN. 27 FOLLOWING WORSHIP Friends of Edgewood: Thank you for each gorgeous peace lily in my step-son s and brother s memory. It has been a great source of joy and comfort. Thank you also for the words and special thoughts from everyone. Love you, Shari Thank you to Sarah for delivering food from the harvest table. It is always so grateful to care for the greatest need. As we start a new year we need to remember to thank those who have blessed us this past year Edgewood is indeed blessed to have Pastor Len, Laura and Kelly. We do pay them but they care for us with love. Thank you also to the church council, Sunday school teachers, Bible study leaders, Pastor Earl for his devotion to the home bound and nursing home worship. To the small band of cleaners both inside and outside of the church building. To everyone that represents Edgewood outside our doors as a caring community of Christian believers and doers. Thanks to all of you. The Outreach Team would like to thank Linda Anderson, Sandy Talo and Joan Stockli each for donating two Christmas baskets for our auction. Another basket was donated by Village Pharmacy and two were donated by Thrivent Financial. Thanks to those that purchased the baskets too! The January book is Educated by Tara Westover. The February book is Wonder by R. J. Palacio. Tues., Jan. 11:30 am Village Inn Restaurant in Fruitport ALL women welcome The first Sunday donations in January, February and March will be donated to the Kids Food Basket. This is an organization that provides a sack lunch for children in need to take home in the evening. These children are identified by their teachers as being in need of a prepared dinner. Several organizations are helping with this task including Coles Bakery donating bread for sandwiches and Meijer's donating fresh fruit and veggies etc. However, they still need to purchase some items; baggies, butter, drinks, chips and more so we will help with that expense for the next three months. Throughout John s Gospel, Jesus engages people in honest and sometimes difficult conversations that lead to faith, renewal and transformation. Over the course of this four -session study by Julie A. Kanarr, we will meet Jesus through his interactions with various characters within the gospel. Their conversations beckon us to explore and grow in faith. Session one: Come and see: Seeking and finding faith In this session, we meet John the Baptist, who bears witness to Jesus. As the circle of Jesus disciples grows, we share in the invitation to come and see. At the wedding in Cana and during the cleansing of the temple, we reflect on how the character of God is revealed in Jesus. Tues., Jan. 7 pm
