1 Dear Friends in Christ, The word conversion keeps coming to mind as I think about my words for this month s article. Lent begins on March 1 st and it begins a time when the Holy Spirit through the church calls each of us individually to more intense conversion from life in the world to life with God. Fasting, prayer, and almsgiving (service to others) are the three disciplines of Lent based on Jesus words in chapter 6 of Matthew s gospel that we hear on Ash Wednesday. Can we give up some of our worldly attachments such as certain foods, TV, time on the computer or on the cell phone and make ourselves more available to God in prayer? Can we spend more time in prayer both alone and with others (at home or work or at the Wednesday night Lenten service)? When we do draw closer to God, the Lord always sends us back into the world to help and serve our neighbor in need. So you might consider volunteer work, donating blood, or putting money in the selfdenial banks for people in need that you will be receiving at church to use during Lent. Let us encourage one another in our Lenten journey, our conversion to Christ, getting our lives more centered in the Lord Jesus. I also sense that the Holy Spirit is bringing about conversion into the body of Christ at another level, among the many churches of Christ. This year, 2017, marks the 500 th anniversary of the beginning of Protestant Reformation by Martin Luther, which led to the division of the Christian church into its many branches. However, in the last 50 years there has been a convergence of understanding among Protestants and Catholics regarding the basic teachings and practices of the Christian faith. This is a good thing because it means we are moving toward fulfillment of Jesus prayer that his followers may be one (John 17). Division is giving way to greater unity within the church of Jesus Christ. This matter raises questions. Is there anything distinctive about being Lutheran? Is one church just as good as another? Should we all become part of one church again? During our midweek Lenten services we will review who we are as Lutherans, how we live out our faith, and what is our place in the one body of Jesus Christ? You will have opportunity to see a movie about Martin Luther and reflect on a book entitled Together by Grace: Introducing the Lutherans as part of our Lenten journey at Edgewood. Conversion! God is at work among us, transforming us individually and collectively. Let the Holy Spirit work in you this Lenten season that we may all be more closely united to our Lord Jesus Christ. Your brother in Christ, Pastor Len
