Issue Five ROTARY CLUB OF FERNDOWN November 2018 THE ROTARY CLUB OF FERNDOWN Special points of interest: Service above Self Meets at Cobhams Sports and Social Club Merley Park Road Wimborne Telephone: Charlies Chat In this issue Charlies Chat British Legion S.O.S. Poppy Day Derek Munn RIP Greek Night Magistrates Inner Wheel Christmas Lights District Conference 2019 News from France. On 14 th November we had our first Away Day at Romanzo s Greek Restaurant in Westbourne. We were privileged to have the Ferndown Mayor (Jean Read) in attendance with her partner Fred. As Mayor Jean was inducted as an Honorary Member of the Ferndown Rotary Club for her duration as Mayor. The food was excellent and certainly plentiful and the wine flowed so I believe that the evening was a success for all who attended. We should consider doing similar things a couple of times per year. If anyone has a suggestion for a venue where we can take over the place, have good food and enjoy ourselves please let me know. The Club s SGM and the CIO AGM were conducted on Wednesday 21 st November and it was a real pleasure to see Les Whittingham putting his name forward as a potential President. He will become President Nominee from July 2019, President Elect from July 2020 and President from July 2021 following his golf buddy (sometimes) Keith Adams. I have agreed to take over as Secretary from next year and I am under no illusions that I will have an impossible act to follow as John B has been a Titan in the role but sadly his health constrains him from further work. We all need to give a John a massive thank you for his service over many years and also a big thank you to Linda for her unstinting support of John in some difficult times for both of them. As we approach December so Christmas is not far from our minds and that means, amongst other things, parties! Our Christmas Party will be at Cobham s and we will be entertained by the Bournemouth Male Voice Choir so get your bookings in early! Friends and family are welcome. The first Wednesday in the new month will be set aside for Fireside Chats and whilst having a Christmas theme we cannot ignore the Brexit elephant in the room so let s all try and put the world to rights by putting forward our own views. Charlie
Royal British Legion Service not Self An inspirational talk by Grant Parrot gave us the History of the Poppy the amount of money raised since its inception and where it was distributed to where it was made. The amount raised was staggering. An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic. It flies consistently at 800 km/h in 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with Tempo Mach 2 appears. The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus flight, boring flight isn t it? Take care and have a look here! He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, only to swoop down almost to sea level in a breath taking dive. He loops back next to the Airbus and asks, "Well, how was that?" The Boeing pilot answers: "Very impressive, but now have a look here!" The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens. It continues to fly stubbornly straight, with the same speed. After five minutes, the Airbus pilot radioed, "Well, what are you saying now?" The jet pilot asks confused: "What did you do?" The other laughs and says, "I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back of the flight to the bathroom, got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon cake and made an appointment with the stewardess for the next three nights - in a 5 Star hotel, which is paid for by my employer. " The moral of the story is: When you are young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great. But as you get older and wiser, comfort and peace are not to be despised either. This is called S.O.S.: Slower, Older, Smarter. Dedicated to all my friends who like me likes the S.O.S. approach! Chris Marshall
Lest we Forget A highlight for me was the WW1 Centenary on Sunday 11 th November. I was privileged to represent the club at the parade and service at St Mary s Church. The event was superbly organised by the Royal British Legion and particularly Grant Parrot, their Chairman. Grant also came along on 21 st November to give the club a very informative talk about remembrance and RBL. I hope that Ferndown Rotary and RBL can cooperate on ventures in the future Derek Munn Derek a Founder Member of the Club sadly passed away on Monday 19th November. Derek was President of the Club in (having been President-Elect in and President-N0minee in He was also International Chairman in and Foundation Chairman in Derek who was the brother-in-law of the late Mike Corr was a member of Ferndown Rotary Club from October 1975 until January 1997 when he resigned through ill health. The Funeral Service has been arranged for Tuesday 11th December at the Bournemouth Crematorium at 12 noon.
Mamma Mia!! what a night, Good Food and plenty of it, Good company and plenty of it, how they got us all in beats me., Good wine and beer and plenty of it, especially on Keith and Les s table and of course Charlie s. A lot of wives were driving home that night. Where did I go wrong.!! Charlie managed to get a bit of business in by Inducting the new mayor of Ferndown (Jean Read) as an Honorary Member of the Club for her duration as Mayor.. Bill Dinwoodie was given the unenviable task of getting 2.50 off each of us for the gratuities for the staff who did an excellent job all evening bringing the many plates of food that kept coming and coming, though every one didn t contribute, much to Bill s annoyance but he enjoyed flashing the cash about. A great evening was had by all and I hope we can do it again on a regular basis. If anyone has a suggestion for a venue please let Charlie know. We have had a Greek evening, how about an Italian or a Chinese one.. The Chef de China at Ferndown Forest. Or Picolo Mondo at Wimborne the list is endless lets have some suggestions.

Inner Wheel at Christmas Lights Magistrates Court and how it is run Bill Field introduced a talk by Probation Officer Kate Mathias and Magistrate Julian Black who gave the Club an insight to problems that the Courts face today. All Court Cases start at the Magistrates Court even Murder those these are referred straight away to the Crown Court.. A video of a drug related case of an attack on an old lady and a Paramedic in an Ambulance was shown. Following the case right through to the final verdict and the resulting sentence brought a lot of mixed views from tclub Members. Which just shows you how difficult it must be for Magistrates. A great evening which I feel sure opened a lot of peoples eyes to what is going on into this days world. Paul Hunter gave the Vote of Thanks
Ferndown Christmas Lights How many Santa s Helpers does it take to erect a Marquee If these are his helpers, a lot apparently, still they managed eventually and surprise surprise it stayed up all day as you can see from the eventual photo s. Didn t they do well!!! We had the only rainy day that week but the crowds still came out. Congratulations to Paul Hunter on a huge step up in entertainment, complete with big bands and a big top. Thank you to Derrick Powell for arranging all the stalls. And thank you to everyone who turned out on the day; I think almost everyone who was around. And to Mayor Jean, who did the honours with the lights. Same again next year! George Phillips D1110 Conference 2019 Join George and me at the conference next year. Entertainment and fellowship; talks and walks. Visit the spa to become a pampered goddess (or god). Trips to local historic cities and shops. Check out these links. A holiday camp it is not! Book by 15 December for the early bird price. Tell me (or George) if you want us to book this for you. Maddy
The Season to be Jolly Just about finished the season for mushrooms which grow in abundance in most regions in France. Everyone is out picking them and everyone is talking about them how many they collected and what sort Some very strange looking, other like the those which the pixies sit on in the fairy stories of our childhood. Most are edible but if there is a doubt, the gatherers take them to the pharmacy where they are checked. It is a late season this year because of the lack of rain for many months. Following on the heels of mushrooms are apples which are sold in abundance in the supermarkets - masses and masses and of all varieties; it seems the French love their apples. Our friends who have orchards take their apples to a communal cider press where they make apple juice which is far superior to the commercial variety. The juice is then sold at the markets and/or kept for their own consumption. Others allow it to ferment for cider. Those who do not grow apples buy it from the growers. There are also "ambulant" cider distilleries which are brought on trailers and go from village to village and all those who wish to do so bring along their apple juice which is then distilled into Eau de Vie. Very strong!!. You can imagine it is quite a social affair. Now it is the start of the truffles season which are collected by specially trained dogs. This "black gold", as it is called is sold at 400 euros per kilo!! We tried it last year when we went to the festival of gastronomy at Bordeaux and our impression is that it is terribly overrated, - a very mild flavour which is hardly discernible -perhaps it is an acquired taste. It is also the season for the Christmas markets of which there are many but among the most famous are Strasbourg and Colmar. They have an enormous Christmas tree to rival that of Trafalgar Square and the wonderful stalls selling gingerbread men and other local delicacies, hand made wooden or knitted toys and of course beakers of mulled wine. Then there is Christmas!! When we first came to France some 35 years ago to spend Christmas with our daughter in Paris, the only coloured lights we saw were those of oncoming traffic. There were not the auto routes as there are now and we drove through village after village with not a light to be seen. We took with us a turkey, the stuffing, Christmas pudding and cake and mince pies...oh, and of course, Christmas crackers. We also brought Father Christmas hats which we wore to walk to the market and people stared at us in amazement. One couple asked where we had bought them. A few years later the stall holders wore them and now they are seen everywhere. Even ten years ago when we first arrived in France, we had to wait until mid December before the shops displayed their Christmas wares but it was so exciting to see it! Now they start as soon as the children go back to school - as we do in England. Still a few differences. Turkeys available only very near to Christmas and only chicken size. The French celebrate more Christmas Eve when they eat shell fish. The counters are piled up with them and it is customary to put in your order (huge platters) in advance and to collect on the morning of Christmas Eve. Christmas day is a quiet family affair. Here none of the associations or clubs have a Christmas dinner or party - not even Rotary. We held our first Christmas party ten years ago when we introduced our friends to Christmas crackers ( which they had never seen before and still not widely available), Christmas cards, which can now be bought in the supermarkets, but not at the time and are expensive, and mince pies! It was great fun and has now become an annual event. "Le Reveillon", New Years Eve is quite another matter. The restaurants are booked several months in advance and families and youngsters alike party on until late in the evening. Joyeux Noel et Bonne Annee a tous mes amis Rotary Jenny & Julian
The Object of Rotary The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: 1. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service. 2. High ethical standards in business and professions, and the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian s occupation as an opportunity to serve society. 3. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian s personal, business and community life. 4. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
