3 My dear Sisters and Brothers, K E N O S I S Grace and Peace in our Savior! What a tremendous grace from our loving God that we are again in this humbling, transforming season of Lent! The prophet Joel said that our God is GRACIOUS AND MERCIFUL, SLOW to anger, RICH in kindness and RELENTING in punishment. What more can we ask of Him as His wayward children, but to RETURN to him with our WHOLE HEART, with FASTING, with WEEPING and MOURNING that we may experience what our Lord offers us for our own well-being and happiness in this life and in the next. As the Lord established a COVENANT RELATIONSHIP with all His creatures beginning with Adam and Eve, then Noah and all his descendants, He remains forever faithful to that solemn agreement. Unfortunately, since the beginning of creation until this present generation, we tend to break that relationship from time to time because of the sins we commit. Ever patient as God is, He never tires to draw us back to Himself, constantly offering us healing through forgiveness, especially in the Sacraments we celebrate. But let us not also forget that God is a God of justice. The Lord does not tolerate the evil that we do. He gives us warnings, grace to fight temptation. If we misuse our free will to do what we want, disregarding His commandments, we will suffer its dire consequences. There is nobody to blame but you and I. When you see a beautiful rainbow, be reminded of God's covenant with you, with all of us. During this holy season of grace, let us approach our God and Father humbly, like a child. Let us feel the warmth of His healing embrace. As a Church, let us also pray for the conversion of all sinners. In Jesus, our Bread of Life, Fr. Frankie, SSS Pastor Diocese of Honolulu 2018 Lenten Regulations The following Fasting and Abstinence regulations are observed: Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older. Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. Lenten Practices: The faithful are encouraged during Lent to attend daily Mass, receive Holy Communion, participate in Penance services, and receive sacramental absolution; to take part in public and private exercises of piety, give generously to works of religion and charity, perform acts of kindness towards the sick, aged and poor; to practice voluntary self-denial, especially regarding food, drink, and worldly amusements; and to pray more fervently, particularly for the intentions of the Holy Family. The youth visited Kahala Nui to give seniors homemade valentines and leis. Seeing the smiles of the seniors at Kahala Nui, as well as the youth, made me truly experience the overflowing love and joy of Christ in our lives. I pray that our young people continue to inspire you to love, as they continue to inspire me to imitate Christ s love in all that we do. Nichelle Soriano Youth & Young Adult Minister Mary, Star of the Sea Parish ADULT CONFIRMATION CLASSES TO BEGIN IN MARCH NO FEE Our Parish will once again be offering Adult Confirmation Classes. Eligible candidates must be at least 18 years of age, baptized, and have received their First Holy Communion. Classes will meet from 7:00pm until 9:00pm for four consecutive weeks on Thursday evenings from March 1, 2018 through March 22, 2018 in the Pastoral Life Center. Copies of Baptismal and First Holy Communion certificates need to be presented at the first class. 8 SCHOOL NEWS Mary, Star of the Sea School MSOS Celebrates Catholic Schools Week 2018 Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center Celebrates Catholic Schools Week 2018 A rainbow of friends is a dream we can share, where everyone is treated with kindness and care. P.K. Halinan It is always a wonderful way to kick start our second semester by celebrating Catholic Education. Learn, Serve, Lead, and Succeed was this year s Catholic Schools Week theme. The week was full of celebrations of each other, family, friends, community helpers, and inspirational speakers. It is always such a special time and we thank you for being a part of our extended ohana. Catholic Schools across the country celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Jan.28-Feb. 2, 2018, with the theme, Catholic Schools: Learn, Serve, Lead, Succeed. Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center invited parents and children to celebrate the week with special activities. On behalf of our teachers and administration, we sincerely thank our families for choosing Mary, Star of the Sea Early Learning Center, a Catholic Montessori Early Childhood Center as the school of choice for your child. We are committed to providing a nurturing and caring environment that supports the development of the whole child: spiritually, personally, socially and academically. ELC staff with Bishop Larry Silva at Catholic Educators Conference at Sacred Hearts Academy. Parents enjoy a school lunch with their children at the ELC. Nearly 200 parents were served meals prepared by our kitchen staff. 8
