1 An Ancient Prayer to Mary, Star of the Sea: Star of the stormy Sea of my mortal life, May your light shine on me so that I do not stray from the path that leads me to Heaven. Amen. It means putting innocence in the place of malice, love in the place of force, humility in the place of pride, service in the place of prestige. It is good work! We Christians must do this: put innocence in the place of malice, love in the place of force, humility in the place of pride, service in the place of prestige. Being disciples of the Lamb means that we must not live like a city under siege, but like a city on a hill, open, welcoming, solidarity. It means not having an attitude of closedness, but proposing the Gospel to everyone, testifying with our life that following Jesus makes us more free and more joyful. Pope Francis Angelus Address January 19, 2014 PARISH MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of Mary, Star of the Sea Parish is to give love, direction and support to all members of our community as we seek ways to follow Christ in our quest for eternal life. The Parish believes that it must evangelize, exclude none, communicate openly, show compassion and mercy to all, and follow Mary, our Star (HOKU), as she leads us in our mission.

3 A VIEW FROM THE PEW Bishop Larry to Hold MSOS Parish Episcopal Visitation January 21/22, 2017 By now, you ve all received a copy of the Parish Pastoral Plan distributed this past weekend in the pews after all the Masses. We are hopeful that you found time to review its contents to prepare for Bishop Larry s visit this coming weekend. Your involvement as parishioners will help to equip and inspire clergy and parish leaders to think long term. The Parish cannot become what it needs to be by remaining what it is but, by adding additional viewpoints and expanding participation in the planning process, the quality, support and buy in for the plan will be enhanced. Here s your chance to be part of that plan by making your voices heard. All parishioners are welcome and will have an opportunity to dialogue/partake in conversation to share their views with the Bishop after the 10:15 am Mass, Sunday, January 22nd. What to expect: the Bishop will preside at the 5:30 pm Mass, Saturday, January 21st, and the 8:15 am Mass, Sunday, January 22nd. He will be preaching at all the other weekend Masses. The Bishop will also meet with clergy, parish and school leaders, and the youth group at designated times during the weekend to discuss the Parish s plans for the future; the challenges we are facing or will face and how we hope to address these challenges. Copies of the Parish Pastoral Plan are still available in the Church pews, or by calling the Parish Office at Let us warmly welcome our Bishop who is the Shepherd given us by our Lord, Jesus Christ! ***************************************************************** Mary, Star of the Sea to Host Annual Diocesan Stewardship Day Saturday, January 28, 2017 Bishop Silva and more than 200 people from across the islands are expected at the event which includes workshops on stewardship, discipleship and evangelization; educational displays; and outstanding local and national speakers such as the Very Rev. These were prophecies uttered during the Babylonian exile to encourage the Jewish exiles to persevere in their trust in Yahweh, who would soon liberate them from Babylon, and eventually send them the long-expected Messiah, promised to Abraham. SECOND READING: 1Corinthians 1: The opening verses of this letter have been chosen for the reading because they show the prophecy, read in the first lesson, as fulfilled among the pagans, as well as emphasizing the purpose of the Messiah's coming: the sanctification and true enlightenment of all nations. GOSPEL: John 1: The pages of the Gospel present John the Baptist as a symbolic example of a bridegroom s friend, as Christ s excellent and exemplary witness. The Baptist s pre-eminent witness was affirmed in two ways: firstly with regard to the content of his testimony and secondly with respect to its style.
