Please visit our website for more information about the Emmanuel Emmaus Community: Inside this issue: Spiritual Director 2 Prayer Chapel Prayer Registrar Behind The Scenes 6 Crysallis / Outreach 9 Agape Leadership Reunion Groups 12 Calendar Directions OOPS! Hold on a minute. It s not even Thanksgiving and I m wishing you a Happy New Year? Maybe for the calendar year I m a little early. But for the Emmanuel Emmaus community we are already in the planning stages for our 2016 walks. We have a newly elected Board of Directors that will meet in January to put into action the plans that are in the works right now. The current Board has established some new committees with the of goal enhancing the pilgrim s experience. We ve also streamed lined and strengthened our commitment to Chrysalis. And most importantly, we are focusing our efforts as we did last year on a single scripture that will be the foundation of all of our efforts. For this year, the Board of Directors foundational scripture will be: Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these. Mark 12:30-31 So.to help our community kick off our New Year I would like to personally invite you to the Emmanuel Emmaus Christmas gathering: When: Saturday, December 5 th - 6:00pm Where: Friendship United Methodist Church 2900 NC Highway 16 South Newton, NC **Please bring a covered dish or desert. SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT THE CHRISTMAS GATHERING In order to honor the Lord and to ask His blessings on our walks - we have invited Rev. Larry Melton to come and speak a word of encouragement to us that focuses on our foundational scripture Mark 12: Also DUANE MULLINS AND HIS BAND THE RED NOSED REINDEER WILL BE PROVIDING MUSIC FOR A PRAISE AND WORSHIP SESSION! I m looking forward to seeing you there! Peace and Grace, J D Heard

2 Spiritual Directors Message 2 Now when these things begin to happen, stand up straight and raise your heads because your redemption is near. (Luke 21:28 CEB). Jesus says these words after listing the terrible signs that will come before his return. I am not about to say that Jesus return is any closer that it has been for the last two thousand years, because that event will happen in God s time. But the words of Jesus are still relevant. They tell us that fear is not to be our response to these events. This is excellent advice in this time of terrorists. Terrorists are called that because their primary objective is to produce fear, to paralyze others with fear. After the attacks in Paris on November 13, many people have responded with fear. causes us to forget Jesus words and other words of scripture. In our fear, we forget that we are taught to welcome the stranger (Lev. 19:34; Deut. 10:19 and Mathew 25:35-4 to name three) and seek to bar all people from a certain area from coming to the United States. We tell ourselves it is temporary, but we know how hard it is to change laws. Please pray that circumstances of all people will change in a way that will cause them to use their resources for peaceful change and in a way that will help many while seeking out the few that are a danger. As the angels say, Do not be afraid. Let us stop, pray, stand straight and raise your heads, but also find a way to love our neighbor as different groups seek our support for various solutions. De Colores! Diana Killian Colossians 3:16 Gatherings Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God Christian Fellowship is a staple in a healthy Christian life. What an opportunity to fellowship with some amazing people. You are invited to the biggest birthday party this year. Come help us celebrate the birth of a very special baby. Please join us on Dec. 5th for our annual Christmas party. This year we want it to be a tacky sweater party. Do your best and wear your tackiest. Prizes are a possibility. This event is open to all, so bring that person you have been praying to sponsor. This is our last fellowship opportunity this year. I hope to see you all there. Thank you for your dedicated service to your churches and your communities in the name of our lord and savior DeColores, Donald Brock This

3 3 Sign Up on the 72 Hour Prayer Vigil chart for Fall Walks!! The vigil begins at 7PM Thursday and runs through 7PM Sunday for each walk weekend. What a powerful way to serve, even if you cannot be out at camp during the walk itself. 72 Hour Prayer Vigil Pray for the pilgrims on the upcoming walks It s the one thing that makes their spirit hot For not to pray, is to say We have no trust or confidence But when we pray in His Holy name Is when Jesus fans the flame! Emmaus Doctrinal Statement The Aim of Emmaus is to inspire, challenge, and equip local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, workplaces, and communities. This aim is derived from the belief that we are to be active in our doctrinal position. Our doctrinal position is reflected in our basic Christian affirmations which are: We confess belief in the triune of God- Father, Son and Holy Spirit; We hold faith in the mystery of salvation in and through Jesus Christ; We believe that God s redemptive love is realized in human life by the activity of the Holy Spirit, both in personal experience and in the community of believers; We believe we are to be conformed to Christ; We believe the reign of God is both present and future reality; We believe the authority of Scripture; We believe our justification as sinners is by grace through faith; and

4 4 Prayer Chapel News Believe, this is a word you see a lot this time of year, BELIEVE! You see it on everything, coffee cups, signs, tee shirt and much more commercial advertising. Just think some person in an ad firm came up with that one word "Believe" slogan and maybe was paid thousands of dollars for that idea. Well, really it actually began thousands of years ago and recorded in the Bible by those four gospel men, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They used it for the real meaning. Prayer, believe and it will be answered. Mark 11:24, "Therefore I tell you whatever you ask for in prayer believe that you have received it and it will be yours." Matthew 21:22 "and whatever you ask in prayer you will receive if you have faith." In other words, if you believe. Luke 11:9 "and I say unto you, ask, and it shall be given you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you." John 15:7 "If you abide in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will and it shall be done unto you." You see Believe goes hand in hand with Prayer, you can't have one without the other. It comes so natural when you believe and you pray to God.. My prayer for this community and our world is Peace, Love and Prayer for self and one another. Amen Prayer Chapel-Sheila Deck Pray for the Teams. Pray for the Pilgrims. Please remember to pray for the 2016 Walks: Walk 155 men Apr 7 10 Walk women Apr 14 17

To sponsor a Pilgrim, mail these three things to me at the address below: (1) Your Pilgrim's completed Application (available on the EE Website) (2) The completed, signed Sponsor Sheet, with Pastor's signature (available on EE Website) (3) A $60.00 deposit or the full $ payment (check to "Emmanuel Emmaus") Once I receive the applications, they go to the EE Board of Directors for approval, after which the Pilgrim will be notified of their acceptance. 7 7 From the Team Selection Chair Just a reminder from the Team Selection Committee: The committee s primary function is to assemble the Conference Room team for each of the Walks. We follow certain policies from the Upper Room in regards to progressive servant hood. Please review the policy below to be considered to serve as a conference room team member: A Community member has to have worked at least two times within the past three years. After 3 years of not serving behind the scenes your name goes to the bottom of the list and after 3 years it is removed from the Behind the Scenes Worker list. If you haven t served in the last 3 years, please come and serve behind the scenes and get your name added back to the list. Areas to serve behind the scenes are: set-up/take-down, kitchen/dining room, prayer chapel, set-up/take-down of candlelight, music, and support. There are sign-up sheets in these areas and it is very important that you sign in so we will have a record of your servant hood. For a new pilgrim, you have to wait one year and serve behind the scenes at least twice to be eligible to serve on a conference room team. If you are eligible to serve on a team and the newly appointed Lay Director calls you to serve, please return their call in a timely fashion. They are trying to build the team and if you can t serve, they will need to contact another name. If they can t get in touch with you, they have no other choice but to move on as they assemble their conference room team. In addition to these behind the scenes work areas, we have now added Follow-ups as a way to sign up if you help set-up tables and/or take down the room after our Follow-up Service and fellowship time. Please come and serve in any of these areas during a walk. You will be truly blessed to serve. Team Selection Chair, Kellie Martin Praise and Worship Music Are you musically inclined and enjoy sharing your gift with others? There are always praise and worship opportunities available during our walk weekends from Saturday night dining room entertainment or Candlelight if you only have a couple of hours to share, to being on the music team for the entire weekend in the conference room. If you can sing but do not have any equipment, we can provide that for you. You will be blessed, even as you bless others!!! Please call Robert Teague or him at rlteag2@bellsouth.net

8 8 Come join us in the Dining Room! No special skills are needed other than willing hands and a servant s heart, but we are requested to serve humbly, quietly, and anonymously. In addition to serving meals, help is always needed to prepare the dining room before meals and to clean-up afterwards. Please remember, you may not serve during a meal if you are a sponsor or close relative of a pilgrim. Feel free to come anytime during the weekend. God always provides the servants needed but there are some specific times that are sometimes understaffed. Please consider sharing your time on Friday or for Saturday dinner clean-up before candlelight. Whatever you are doing, work at it with enthusiasm, as to the Lord and not for people, because you know that you will receive your inheritance from the Lord as the reward. Serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 DeColores Mike Sloan Kitchen Each walk I am amazed by the servants that God sends to make each weekend happen and 2015 has been no exception! There has been an outpouring of help behind the scenes and each person there was greatly appreciated. I am truly honored to get to serve alongside so many faithful servants. For anyone who is new to the community, we operate on faith, asking for help in the kitchen and other areas throughout the weekend. You do not need to sign up ahead of time to serve behind the scenes. Food preparation starts on Thursday afternoon around 2:00 pm and tear down of the kitchen takes place around 1:00 pm on Sunday afternoon. We welcome you to join us anytime during the weekend, as we start preparing for breakfast the night before and 2-3 hours before each meal is to be served. Please feel free to come back and serve for even one meal, to stay for the weekend, or come early for closing and help tear down the kitchen. DeColores, Ronnie Mosteller

9 9 is a three-day weekend for teenagers (or 19-24) years old. The teens listen to 15 talks on spiritual growth given by youth, laity, and clergy. This event can be life-changing! The love of God is made real to the young people. The experience can surely strengthen their walk with Him! Send applications to: Tiffany Shuford 17307Delaney Drive Concord, NC tmsuford88@gmail.com Make a difference for a young person. Sponsor someone for a flight. Applications available on the website. Emmanuel Chrysalis has been in prayer over the past several months. you know we had to postpone the last 4 Flights because we did not have enough caterpillars. The Chrysalis Committee and the Emmanuel Emmaus Board are working together to move forward. We as humans know there is no perfect time for a Flight, it is always God s time and it will be perfect! We have to trust and keep asking our youth to spend a weekend with God and us. We are asking you to send in applications. I know it will be difficult for the youth to commit without having dates. That is where trust comes in. We ask and God moves! If you have any question please or call me or any other Chrysalis Committee member and we will do our best to answer your questions. Fly with Christ!!! Nancy Fulbright nfulbright@charter.net As Outreach Mission Program Purpose: The purpose of the Emmanuel Emmaus Outreach Program is to reach out to Churches that have not participated in the Emmaus 72 hour weekend. The Emmanuel Emmaus Community (EEC) would present the purpose of Emmaus to churches either in Small Groups or participating in the entire Worship service. It is the wish of the EEC that no one who wishes to attend the Emmaus Weekend not be allowed to attend due to financial reasons or lack of sponsorship. The EEC will give scholarships to the first 2 people from a non-participating church. If a church has had a few people to experience the weekend and cannot financially sponsor other members in their church, they can request a scholarship for 2 people from the EE Board. Once the church has had the members to attend the weekend, the EEC has the obligation to help organize a reunion group if needed. Requirements: The only requirement for the scholarship is that the EEC be allowed to present the Emmaus movement to the Church either in Small Groups or as a worship service. The presentation would consist of the showing of a DVD from the Upper Room and life changing testimonies from members of the Emmanuel Emmaus Community. The length of the program is close to 30 minutes. Clergy Support: The Emmanuel Emmaus Community is to support Clergy in the church at all times. The EEC community would fill in for the clergy in time of emergency and the need of spiritual retreats. The EEC is here to handle any worship service for the Clergy with personal testimonies from Lay Persons relating to the Emmaus Movement.

10 10 Agape Guidelines for Walk Weekends 1. Be sure there is enough Agape for the designated areas where you wish to have your Agape placed: 50 Dining Room 25 Bed Agape 2. Mark the bag with your Agape with # of pieces and your Reunion Group Name. It will make it easier for the Support Team and easier to I. D. at closing. You may mark the bag with your suggestion as to when you would request that your Agape be put out, but the final decision will be made by the Support Team to ensure that the Agape is spread out through the weekend and all Agape is given out. (If possible put in clear baggies for several reasons. keeps together/clean/easier to organize for the Support Team). 3. Please pickup your Agape at closing at the end of the Walks for that season (after each walk would be great). The AgapeTote will be placed upstairs at closing for your convenience to pickup any leftover Agape. Agape left at the end of the Fall and Spring Walks will be given to Chrysalis to help with their Agape. The storage issue and our furry creations that like to visit us can cause problems and therefore we don t want to leave any Agape in the closet during our breaks. Also, you will know how much Agape you have to start off the next season (or next walk). That way you don t have a lot of extra Agape and could possibly save you some money on making your Agape. 4. Having a clean AgapeTote at the beginning of each Walk will make it so much easier on the Support Team for that Walk. They will not have to sort through the Agape each time and remove damaged Agape. The Support Team can start with new Agape and know exactly how much Agape they have in the very beginning. The Support Team has many duties and having to count and sort Agape and/or clean up what was left from previous Walks is very time consuming - they really don t have the time. If you have worked on the Support Team you understand and if you have not, please go help out, they are always looking for extra hands. I know from time to time we will forget or not be able to make closing to pickup, so please contact me ( kjmart89@gmail.com or phone ( )or have someone from your Reunion Group pickup for you. I hope that these guidelines help to answer any questions you may have about the Agape and the distribution. We thank each of you for your hard work. DeColores, Ann Gaskins
