1 Mary Lou Kampert Beacon Editor Mary Taylor Memorial United Methodist Church The Reverend Dr. Brian R. Bodt, Pastor The Reverend Harold V. W. Vink, Pastoral Assistant Whoever you are, wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here! September Telephone Fax Website: September 2014 Spiritual Sojourns Dear Members and Friends of Mary Taylor Memorial Church, Time and tide wait for no one is an ancient proverb constantly re-learned. Its meaning is that events unfold whether we keep up or not. Events have unfolded this summer at our church. Two contingents of U.M. ARMY, our summer beach service and church picnic on July 20 th, Education First camp July 3-23, Bridgeport Bluefish on August 9 th, an encounter with Gil on the (Milford) Green on August 14 th, the Oyster Festival on August 16 th, meetings of the Building Committee, Capital Campaign Committee and Extravagant Generosity annual appeal, a major church conference on August 24th, and play dates in June, July and August are but some expressions of our vibrancy of summer church. Not to mention worship. I ve missed some of you; enough that, on a hit-or-miss basis, I ve mailed out some bulletins. I hope September sees your return. This issue of The Beacon should be especially noted for Rally Day on September 7 th, when Sunday School resumes at 9 a.m. and worship returns to 10 a.m. The full schedule of activities that day appears in the worship service listing on the next page. This issue is full of other ministry opportunities, too. To what ministry is God calling you? Sincerely in Christ, Pastor Brian Rev. Dr. Brian R. Bodt Pastor

4 4 The BEACON AUGUST 2014 ADULT STUDY SEPTEMBER S Tuesday evening & Wednesday morning study group A five-week study on wellness, healing and prayer will start on September 2nd and 3rd in the Gunn Library. The 90 minute sessions will begin each Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Wednesday at 10 a.m., led by Rev. Hal Vink & Mary Lou Hastings. The study book, STRETCH OUT YOUR HAND by Tilda Norberg & Robert Webber is available ($12.00) from Pastor Hal. The authors write candidly about their growing faith in God s desire to bring wholeness. They ask questions all people ask, such as, Why doesn t everyone who prays get healed? What is the role of faith in healing? The study opens to us the basic understanding that healing prayer is more than getting well from an illness---it is part of a beautiful and dynamic process leading to the wholeness that God wants for us. If you re interested or have questions, please speak to Mary Lou or Hal. RELAY FOR LIFE Mary Taylor has a long-standing tradition (this is our 12th year!) of participating in the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life event in Milford. 11 11 The BEACON SEPTEMBER 2014 GIL ON THE GREEN GIVES THE CHURCH ON THE GREEN A SPOTLIGHT On Thursday, August 14, a dozen hearty MTMUMC souls were the first to be featured in the 4:30 a.m. air-time for Gil on the Green. Broadcasting on town greens around the state, Gil Simmons, meteorologist for WTNH Channel 8, New Haven, gives his weather report while featuring the best of the Nutmeg State. Mary Taylor Memorial Church appeared in three segments between 4:30 and 7 a.m. In the first, our people were introduced by name and Jim and Phoebe Repetsky spoke of the upcoming Oyster Festival with our Men s Club food booth and Trash and Treasures thrift store. In the second, MTMUMC folks surrounded Faye Zeiner, Carol Galloway and Pastor Brian. Faye showed Gil (an avid snowmobiler) her snowmobiling trophy from Moosehead Lake, Maine; and Pastor Brian and Carol presented Gil with gifts: an MTMUMC mug, t-shirt and a prayer shawl (chosen by Faye). Pastor Brian got a moment to talk about our various mission and community involvements (named were Fair on the Green, Relay for Life, Community Supper, Beth-El Center, UMARMY and Trash and Treasures) and to remind listeners that whoever you are, wherever you are on your spiritual journey, you are welcome here. Gil, intrigued by the prayer shawl, invited Pastor Brian back in the third segment to speak of that seven-year ministry (October, 2007) and the over 600 prayer shawls knitted or crocheted in that time. Faye had deliberately chosen the colors of Gil s shawl: yellow for sun, blue for blue skies, gray for cloudy weather and (despite the snowmobiling connection) NO WHITE for NO SNOW! Representing your church were (alphabetically) Leigh Bak, Pastor Brian Bodt, Diana Cable, Dave Doyle, Eileen Doyle, Carol Galloway, Bob Lawrence, Charlie Mebane, Jim Repetsky, Phoebe Repetsky, Bob Virgalla, Faye Zeiner. Thanks to Dave Doyle for making our bathrooms available for the WTNH staff; and Leigh Bak for a quick trip to get an MTMUMC mug for Gil. By 9:30 a.m. we had a request for a prayer shawl from an employee at Milford Hospital who saw the broadcast! God is good! MARK YOUR CALENDARS! This year's Extravagant Generosity Campaign will kick off October 26. Our focus this year is based on the Contemplations of Abundance that create relevant synergy with our program of Extravagant Generosity. Stay tuned for opportunities in education and spiritual development. The culmination of the campaign will be November 6th, which is also the date of our annual church conference. So mark your calendars now and plan to stay after church for this special program. Tina Gage Chairman of the Stewardship Committee

12 12 The BEACON SEPTEMBER 2014 INFORMATION FROM OUR PARISH NURSES By Sheryl Hollyday We recently found out that my husband Tom had one pre-cancerous colon polyp which was found during his routine colonoscopy. It was removed without difficulty and he will be checked again in 3 years. He was lucky. I have two friends and colleagues that were not so lucky. I have asked for prayers for both of them. Both diagnosed in their 30 s, about a year ago. Joy, married with two boys under the age of 4 died in the spring. Pablo, a bright and caring nurse who was enrolled in Anesthesia school has recently learned of a recurrence of colon cancer after already going through months of chemotherapy treatments as well as surgery. I ask you to keep him in your prayers as well as Joy s family. Colorectal cancer is cancer of the colon or rectum. It s as common in women as it is in men. This year, over 136,830 people will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer and an estimated 50,310 will die of the disease. It is the third most common cancer in the United States and a leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people ages 50 and older. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer that s why it s so important to get screened. People over age 50 have the highest risk of colorectal cancer. You may also be at higher risk if you are African American, smoke, or have a family history of colorectal cancer. The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly starting at age 50, or earlier if you have a person in your family that has had this type of cancer. With certain types of screening, this cancer can be prevented by removing polyps (grape-like growths on the wall of the intestine) before they become cancerous. Check with your health care professional for what screening is best for you. Colorectal Cancer Prevention: Be physically active for at least 30 minutes, at least five days a week. Maintain a healthy weight. Don t smoke. If you do smoke, quit. If you drink alcohol, have no more than one drink a day if you re a woman or two drinks a day if you re a man. Eat fruits, vegetables and whole grains to help you get and stay healthy. Eat less red meat and cut out processed meat. For more information, check out Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer: Get screened starting at age 50. Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke. Get active and eat healthy. The Parish Nurse team will hold a short meeting after Friendship house on September 28th (place to be determined). You do not need to be a healthcare professional to attend, anyone that has an interest in promoting the health and well-being of our community is welcome. For more information or details, please contact Sheryl Hollyday.
